Bolts' face uphill battle
The San Diego Chargers face a daunting three game stretch in an effort to keep their 2005 playoff hopes alive. The first battle will be waged Sunday when the Bolts travel to the RCA Dome in Indianapolis to face the 13-0 Colts. It’s the first of back-to-back road games.
The Chargers season took a turn in the wrong direction last Sunday when they dropped a 23-21 decision to the Miami Dolphins at Qualcomm Stadium. It ended a fivegame winning streak and cost the Chargers an opportunity to gain ground in the AFC playoff picture. The Jacksonville Jaguars lost to the Colts, 26-18, to fall to 9-4, while the Kansas City Chiefs lost to Dallas, 31-28, to remain even with the Chargers at 8-5. Denver beat Baltimore, 12-10, to improve to 10-3 and take a two-game lead over both the Chargers and Chiefs in the AFC West.
The Chargers are still one of the NFL’s hottest teams. They’ve won five of their last six and have averaged almost 31 points a game during that stretch. The Bolts now face the Herculean task of trying to unseat the league’s first team to start a season 13-0 since the 1998 Denver Broncos. The Chargers will not be intimidated by playing in front of the hostile crowd that will await them at the RCA Dome. Last year, the Chargers took a 31-16 lead early in the fourth quarter at the dome, only to see the Colts rally to tie the game with 56 seconds left and win it in overtime. Many players still remember that game and will be eager for the opportunity to knock the Colts from the ranks of the unbeaten.

The KEY to the Colt's D is their rotating of the D Line. Don't let them do it, and where them down.
Scott Smith (December 12, 2005 08:32 PM)
We match up well. Remember last year? We need something to get us back on track and stopping a streak after letting them set a record would be a perfect start.
Jason R (December 12, 2005 09:46 PM)
Yes, the loss this past Sunday was extremeely dissapointing, however, all the Chargers can do now is take it one game at a time. No worrying about what the other teams are doing. If San Diego can win out, they will prove a whole lot to a bunch of naysayers.
Dan B (December 12, 2005 10:33 PM)
chargers will beat indy this week, after that embarrasing loss to the dolphins they will have a huge chip on their shoulders. Merriman and the rest of the D will be ready to kill She li's brothers ass, we will hear Joe theismans' comments no doubt sucking the manning family jewels but the chargers will prevail and then go to KC and beat them ruining their 10 year home winning streak in KC in the month of December and beat the broncos and once we make the playoffs watch out...my gf thinks you deserve an F for your crappy writing

Let this serve as an official notice. After a lifetime of pulling for the Chargers, and having my butt handed to me when I chose them as my team on Playstation, I announce that I am no longer a fan. Just a few years ago, we finished the season with a 1-15 record, and it was bitter, but I prefer that season to Sunday's loss. At least at 1-15, we had heart, and gave it 100 percent. Yes, we're a better team, sure, and the schedule is tough, but resting on a reputation is reserved for the Patriots, and look where it got them. I catch a lot of flack from friends who pull for teams after a superbowl victory is secured. Guess they have the right idea, they are never heartbroken year after year. I am ashamed at all levels of play, coaching, and management. The team had enough motivation to win for a change... Can you say "the past decade"? This team was supposed to be hungry. Congratulations, the world almost took the team seriously.

I have been a Bolts fan since 79'. I have been through the rough years. I think this team is far better than the 94' squad. We match up pound for pound with Indy, which is why we whipped on them for 3.8 quarters last year. I personally believe that the loss to Miami was a needed evil, and gave them a reality check. I think they will come in with a kick-*** attitude and finish the season "undefeated". Just know that once we beat the Colts, we still won't get the respect we deserve!, comes with being a Charger fan! We'll see.

i don't know what all the people in san diego are bitching about. i am a big chargers fan, but i live in michigan. and if you think it's dissapointing watching the chargers you obviously haven't watched the lions lately. i am somewhat of a part-time lions fan and that team is dissapointing as all hell. three real nice recievers, pro bowl potential all over the field on offense AND defense, but still no wins can't even beat the 2-10 packers on espn sunday night. what a damn shame. i think the bolts are in a lot better shape then you all realize. the team was dissapointing on sunday, but they will bounce back and play indy tough. i didn't say they would win but they will play hard and hopefully smart. the bottom line is all us charger fans get dissapointed on one game, but you don't know the meaning of dissapointing.

The chargers are going to lose again. They arent in the colts league. We will beat them like the 13 teams before them. Sorry to tell you charger fans, all 50 of you that the colts are the best team and theres no way that the bolts will beat the colts!
Adam (December 13, 2005 08:33 AM)
The Bolts do not match up with the Colts at all. All Brees is going to do is try and throw to Gates because LT will be shut down....better try and throw some screens to him! The Bolts season is done...no one can beat the Colts!

Hey You Colts fans, shut up and give it a rest I am sick and tired of hearing that the Colts will be the bolts and I happen to live in San Diego. If you have forgotten that we were 12-4 last year, This year was tough so, dosen't mean we won't go down so easily.

It's obvious that the AFC West is the most competitive division this year and the AFC overall. Our Chargers have been fully tested, there is NOTHING the Colts can throw at us that we have not seen. The teams are "almost" mirror images of each other - where we lose the QB comparison, we win the RB, we lose the D-line, we win LB's, we lose the WR, we win the TE, the O-Lines are equal, and both secondaries are suspect (remember Cincy). So what is gonna' happen if we win? I can hear the crybabies already!
Ken (December 13, 2005 10:59 AM)
The Chargers can go a long way in my book by winning out the next three games. What we saw Sunday was pathetic and not unlike what I've seen my entire life as a fan of this team - a lack of killer instinct. I love you guys, but suck it up and get it done for once!
Patrick A. Anderson (December 13, 2005 12:48 PM)
Hey, remember the playoffs in Indy last year when Denver spanked Indy and Peyton was throwing tantrums? I'd like to see something like that again, substitute of course, Bolts for Broncos. heh heh.
Go Chargers!

Every great team has one bad loss.Once everyone stops kissing Indy and Pittsburghs' *** they will see who really rules the AFC.

I'm torn between reality a superbowl vision. The reality is the Chargers have been strugling with certain parts of their game. Kick offs, special teams, O line. But then they have these spurts where they look like the best team in the league. Oh well, you'd think after 20 years of this I'd get used to it. I did have this vision though...Chargers Seahawks at the Big Dance. Go Bolts!
friendofrogers (December 13, 2005 04:11 PM)
lets see the colts beat the titans texans and jaguars twice thats 6 wins 4 any team i wish we had their schedule

background.. native san diegian now living in az.. first thing, we needed this victory more than anything. How can we beat the Pats, Giants, KC and not even show up against the weak ass dolphins? We play the tough teams tough and the sub-par teams like we just came off a three day drinking binge, that seems to be our pattern. However, that is exactly why I think we can ruin the winning streak of the Colts and beat Denver. KC in KC is a differnt matter thier winning streak of what 10 years at home speaks for itself. Finaly the bolts will be the best 10-6 team not making the playoffs. thank you MARTYBALL.
tay davis (December 13, 2005 04:27 PM)
if theres a team in the nfl that can beat the colts . it is our bolts on sunday win or lose we will see what our chargers are made of.reguardless of the outcome we are behind you guys. as for you colt fans i live on the east coast about 2hours from baltimore. i remember when the colts left.late at nite sneaking out of town very weak people and by the way last time you guys made it the big dance your Q.back was a guy named johnny U.YOU STILL HAVE A LOT TO PROVE JUST REMEMBER ITS UNSAFE TO PLAY WITH LIGHTNING GO BOLTS
jeff stahl (December 13, 2005 05:22 PM)
Okay, I think there's no doubt what so ever that L.T. is the best running back in the league and arguably the best all around player period. If all this is true than WHY does Marty insist on running him up the midddle time and again? Pound the ball with Oneal and let L.T. do his thing on the outside. No wonder his chest is bruised... Also what happened to the trickery that we saw earlier in the season? Marty needs to spread out the Colts defense if he expects his bolts to pull this one out. Com'on Marty mix in a halfback pass or a bootleg halfback pass. Do something MIX IT UP!!
tay davis (December 13, 2005 06:53 PM)
i agree with the commentators during the game last Sunday... the Bolts simply did not SHOW UP. They were looking to this Sunday's game and it cost them a win. But I think we can all agree that the Bolts are even more determined to win this Sunday. Indy will let up.... let's face it, the Indy starters don't want to get hurt... they have Superbowl on their mind... Yeah, they'll let up, and the Chargers can sneak out of town with a much deserved win which we should have gotten last year. We'll talk about the "real" game with Indy in January. OPEN DA GATES, BABY!!
Ben C. (December 13, 2005 07:59 PM)
chargers need to go for it when ever its 4th and 1, stop giving L.T. the ball when he starts out bad leave it up to brees(hes consistent) give L.T. a chance 2nd quater, have some faith in nate kaeding when under Indy's 40, Give Brees more protection, and rush payton 75% of the time, The bolts can win, remember the ofensivepower on both sides, Ps. L.T. is expected to be running a lot, L.T. will be stoped if used too much. Yet im 100% sure that the chargers will win if they let the QB make the big plays not the RB.(no offense L.T. i got your jersey :)
angelo (December 13, 2005 08:27 PM)
Its easy to to be 13-0 when you have only played 2 tough games this far into the seaon. Go to the east coast 5 times and play 6 teams after their bye week and see what your record would be. Yes the chargers blew a game they should have wone at home. Nevertheless, if they play up to their ability from here on our, they can run the table. The season starts Sunday in Indy. We'll know who's right at about 4pm PT

The beauty of being a fan of any sports team is that even in the face of overwhelming odds you can put your chin up and your chest out, and if nothing else, support and believe in your boys. They will get the job done. We needed the kick in the pants that Miami gave us. Beating the Colts a miracle? I'm sure Miami was thinking the same thing about San Diego.
William Smith (December 13, 2005 10:21 PM)
The chargers have been in a tight spot this year with there schedule and loses. Ive loved them since i was a kid at my dads football partys(Dan Fouts eras)Just like then I beleive they have what it takes to get it done.Eliminate the mistakes on offense, short routes, screens, three step drops... opens up L.T & more. Defense charge!!!!!!!!!!! & make him cry like his baby brother.
mike cornell (December 14, 2005 01:33 AM)
This is the NFL. There are three games left. Before all the Chargers fans start counting the Chargers out of anything they should remember this, on any given Sunday any time can lose to any team in the NFL. That includes Jacksonvile, Pittsburg, K.C. as well as the Bronco's and the Colts. It ain't over till it is over. The Chargers can win all their remaining games, that includes the game against the Colts and the can beat K.C. in K.C. If the Chargers end the season 11-5 and don't make the play-offs they will go down in history as the only team to go 11-5 and not make the playoffs. That would provide more recognition to a good team like the Chargers than making the playoffs and pulling another stunt like last year against the Jets. I can't envision anyone beating the Colts in the Superbowl this year. They are good! Unless Peyton Manning trips over another 5 yard line marker and breaks his kneck (we don't want that)they will win the Superbowl. Let's all just support the Chargers and thank them for the GREAT entertainment they have provided all of us this year. Before we can start thinking about a Superbowl win we need to fix some areas of our team, like the secondary and our special teams. Let's see what happens next year. I have been a Chargers fan since 1975. That year we went 1-11. We are closer than we have ever been before. If you are a true Chargers Fan you need to rally behind our Chargers. If you just came along for a bandwagon ride to the Superbowl this year please keep your comments to yourself.

This Sunday is going to be HUGE!!! As we all know, this has been a very roller coaster of a year, with eight big positives and five very heart-breaking negatives. However, whether we make the playoffs or not, this team needs to prove to themselves that they are a great team... and "elite" team. A big win this Sunday would be a gigantic momentum swing and boost the morale of the players and us fans. I really think that the key to beating Indy this Sunday is to keep Indy's offense off the field. When they are on the field, our "D" has to put extreme pressure on Manning so he doesn't have time to read his WRs. Our secondary has to play tight and we'll definitely have to put a fast linebacker on Dallas Clark. And of course, our offense will have to score each time we have the ball... whether it's seven points or three. I'd really like to see the rookie Vincent Jackson catch some balls this week. I'm sure he could be a threat that Indy wouldn't expect. I know that he's a rookie, but he's gonna have to get his feet wet at some time. I love this team, and I agree with other fans that this team is a lot better than the 1994 Chargers. Again, let's finish this season on a high note and hopefully make the playoffs. GO BOLTS!!!!!
AIR (December 14, 2005 07:14 AM)
The Bolts have not beaten Indy since Manning has been the QB. In his best season ever, I don't think that will change Sunday. Perhaps The Chargers can at least keep it respectable. But I doubt it, not this year, and not in the Dome.
Shiny (December 14, 2005 07:50 AM)
I think that we will see what we will see. We have to wait til the game ends to see who loses. I just hope that it is not the Chargers. I wont be watching the game though, cuz everytime I do, the Bolts lose.
Jared (December 14, 2005 08:42 AM)
I know Sunday was a bad game, but I have faith in the Chargers. DO NOT COUNT THEM OUT. I live in Va Beach, and have been a fan since birth, 1968, and its been a long and fun ride. Just because the Chargers don't win every game doesn't mean I will give up on them. Bandwagon fans can go jump in the lake. If you don't root for your team every game, what kind of fan are you. Keep the faith in our VERY TALENTED team. Go Bolts, Bust the Colts.
Bryan (December 14, 2005 09:14 AM)
The Chargers do have a chance to beat Indy (every team has a weak spot), but I think they have to stop being so predictable. Even people who know little about football can tell you when Brees is gonna give the ball to LT. And then the ball likely gets thrown in a 3rd down scenario. Yeah, maybe opposite teams have good pass protection. But figuring out what the offense is going to do takes half a brain. I think the offense should utilize everyone's talents a bit more.
Emily (December 14, 2005 10:04 AM)
Go Chargers!!!
Julie (December 14, 2005 10:16 AM)
Living in a suburb of Indy, anyone can guess what I hear about nonstop... She li's brother and the unbeaten Colts. Well let me tell ya something... I'm sick of it. If the Colts played in an outdoor stadium like any real team, I promise you that they wouldn't be as successful. I was at the game last season when Womanning broke the record an beat us in overtime. That's not gonna happen this year. We're gonnan go in there, play 100% balls out football for FOUR quarters and remind the Colts and their fair-weather fans that it takes an outdoor team to go undefeated. Go Chargers!
Jay (December 14, 2005 12:39 PM)
I have been a DIE-HARD chargers fan since '92. I'm from South Dakota and always around Denver and Minnesota fans, but you know what? Through all of the tough seasons the bolts have had, I'm STILL here, living, breathing, and bleeding for the chargers. Nothing will ever change that! I get sick and tired of people saying San Diego will never be as good as they once were (1994). I'm not like those Vikings fans that jump ship when their team don't do s##t, I've been loyal to my team and always will be. As far as Indianapolis goes, their undefeated streak ends this sunday. The bolts will come out shooting and have their hands raised at the end of the game celebrating their victory. Sure they disappoint me at times, but every GOOD team does that to their fans. Before last season started, I told my friends that the Chargers would be in the playoffs, and look what happened! I also told them that in 2005-06 we'll be in the super bowl. Things are looking a little down but I still have hope, I'm not letting go of that premonition on the fact of their record. We'll surprise the hell out of everyone this season, and the next to come. GO BOLTS! Mark my words, in the next 5 years, we'll have at least 2 Super Bowl wins for the fans and themselves. So San Diego, lets get the s##t in order and prove EVERYONE wrong in the fact that they say we can't do anything. Make me proud (as if you haven't already).
P.S. I hear rumors of the team moving, please don't do that. That would be like giving up my daughter for adoption. NEVER let go of something you love SO much, hold this team close to your heart like its your own child and never let go. I haven't, and oh yes, my daughter will be a Chargers fan, he he. :-)
Cory Coon (December 14, 2005 01:14 PM)
I have been a die hard Charger fan since 1979 and this past loss to Miami really hurt but we will preval and will beat the Colts and wind up 11-5 and make the playoffs.
Darren (December 14, 2005 02:40 PM)
Look, the Chargers can beat Indy. They can't play conservative they have to go after Payton and get him off his game. I have not seen a team do that yet. The Chargers, with their defesive speed can get in Paytons face.
The pressure is starting to build for the Colts to go undefeated and the Chargers can disrupt their tempo, just like the underdog Miami did to us.
I have also been a longtime fan and have been through the ups and downs (more downs it seems)but have stayed true to the "Bolts". We have had two great seasons back to back and know people are frustrated "PLEASE" if thats not a "Fly by night fan" I don't know what is. Hey! Houston may get 1st pick in the draft they may need some fans that you could bandwaggon with. Oh! by the way this years team is a lot better than the 94 team, our offense is actually scoring, not just our place kicker and defense (you new fans may not realize that) We had our tails handed to us in the Super Bowl because our offese could not score.
Colts your days are numbered and the Chargers have got it! Enjoy your 15-1 record.
"GO BOLTS"

Finally The Colts!!!!!!!!
I've been waiting for this game for a long time now and i know it wont dissapoint. The Chargers have always had a close game when they lost, but now that the chargers are against a wall they should step up their offence. When L.T. dosent start out with succesful runs dont give him the ball alot, leave it to Brees. Then later on give L.T. a second chance with every new quater. When the chargers lose, its usually becasue they put too much faith in L.T. The Chargers can only beat the Colts if they spread out their offense. If they use a lot of different plays they should disrupt that deffense and remember the colts have had close games so this game can go any way. If L.T. plays his A game give him the ball a lot, if not give it to Drew Brees!!! i cant emphazise that enough.
Angelo (December 14, 2005 08:23 PM)
Hey you guys know what to do and I am full of belief that honestly the only team down the schedule from week 6 that I saw beating those colts was of corse without a doubt my favorite team the SAN DIEGO SUPER CHARGERS.Well now's the best time to shine especially since you'll have to get used to beating them at home because the rematch in indy for the divisional or even bigger the afc championship game and by then it'll be all an open Gates from the force of the Brees that came off that the most elusive back to ever bolt on by.Tomlinson.But I give tremendous credit to both the lines and special teams as well oh and eal and keenen boy yeah buddy get em' get em'.well later.A fan from las vegas nevada.

Go bolts !!!!!!!! We are primed for this win under 20 points in 5 losses....We are really really good this year...Colts are suspect for a loss...Send light-out and the boys every single down...hit him so hard his daddy feels the sting...a manning out of the pocket is a uneffective passing game....This is the key to success. GO BOLTS!

The loss hurt them alot for the playoffs, having the hardest 3 games coming up in the AFC.... that won't help.. but the chargers are a good enough team that they can handle it which i could say no other team can do maybe (COLTS) but the chargers are going to go undefeated to finish the season and hopefully make the playoffs with a steelers loss or a Denver melt down.. but they have to get their secondary in order... that is their weak point and everybody knows it... Chambers ran all over the Chargers ... that is the key on defense have great coverage and pressure on manning... on offense nothing has to be said.. they lead the league in points. Secondary has to step UPPPPPPP...(JAMMER)... can't wait for the game.

The first NFL game that I ever watched was the greatest game ever played - the 1982 playoff game between Miami and the Chargers. Since then I have been a true blue (and yellow) Charger fan from Fouts to Humprhies to Leaf (oh God!) to Flutie and now to Brees and all the others in between. Through all of the ups and painful downs, I have stayed loyal which, at times hasn't been easy. Unfortunately living in Toronto, Canada makes watching my beloved Bolts very difficult but still I persevere. I will admit that when I saw the schedule I knew it would be a tough road but never doubted that they would be in the playoffs. It is still within reach and I am still holding out hope that this year we will be in the Super Bowl. We knew before the season started that the road to Detroit went through Indy and for us it runs through there twice.
I don't think that Indy is as perfect as their record indicates though their soft record has them playing with a lot of confidence. It's easy to run up a perfect record when you play 11 losing teams but they are still a very good team and we will have to play our best game of the season on Sunday. There are still a lot of people who doubt that the Bolts belong with the best teams in this league so it is time for us to prove it. Even if Indy goes on to win the Super Bowl, how great would it be to ruin their run at immortality?
I think that this team is by far better than the 1994 team in all aspects except heart. While I don't doubt that this year's team has plenty of heart, they have yet to make a big statement like the 1994 team did in Pittsburgh in the AFC championship game. Hopefully Sunday will be their statement game and we can forget about last week and get ready for the playoffs. Next week against KC is a tough one but nothing we can’t handle and Denver will be resting most of their guys so it should be an easy one.
GO BOLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

no respect for the chargers. its been like that forever. ive been a charger fan for ten years and i have to say screw the media and chargerhaters for the lack of respect that they give san diego. nobody had a harder schedule than the chargers this year, and look, they still have a winning record. chargers are going to go to indy with a no mercy mentality and woop on manning number 2 this sunday. we'll make it to the playoffs just watch. Its finally time that the nation recognize the potential that San Diego has. Forget the bandwagon. This game is a true testimont to the real fans, the lifers, who have dedicated themselves to Charger football. I'm sick of the sportswriters dictating success. The only true success is that which is recognized by the true fan, who appreciates the unbelievable success that the chargers have had with the level of the competitiors that they have played. No one expected the Chargers to get this far. Let alone make the playoffs, which they will. The victory will lie in the playcalling of Marty, the efficency of Drew, and the ability of the Defense to produce TURNOVERS. DEFENCE show up and we can win. The secondary wins or loses this game. For once win it for us, the true fan.

I have been a fan since 1961. I remember the wonderful players of old. When we had success in the past, it would be because we made the other teams respect our passing talents, then our running attack would open up effectively. I think it is time to bring that type of formation back into our game plan. Lt runs up the middle for no gain on first down but does the offensive coordinate change tactics, no, he should but he hasn't yet. You have stayed true conservative control form. You know every team has decided before hand that they have to stop Lt. That means one on one coverage on the outside on first down and second down. Hello! Are you listening? The Colts are no different than any of team. They want to show their dominance first up front. That is their weakness. The Colts are determined to be dominant first. Well if we need to go through a stone wall don't you think a pass or a swing pass to Lt would benefit us more. I understand that Lt has not been catching to well lately. Then go to the receivers instead. Hello! Is anybody reading this?
The defensive secondary is so afraid of getting beaten that they can not take their eyes off of the other teams receiver. They get beat because the lose sight of the ball. What happened to the defense that knocked down four of New York Jets passes at the end of the game. You can not stare at the recievers and expect to defend the pass. There are two elements that need to be considered. One, not to allow the receiver to get behind you. (Touch Down in the making!) Know before hand where the receiver may go to get into open spaces of your defense. Simply make the decision to be there before he does! If you can accomplish these two difficult tasks, you will be in position to intercept or least defend by blocking the receiver.
I have been waiting for a Super Bowl Championship for a long time. Don't you think it is about time?

Play MAN D but give the WR's their space because the Colts live off big plays I don't care about the defensive turn around this year, they LIVE off the big strikes...stop that and you win...

I love the comments now, because everyone has gotten a good message across, we need to make the playoffs and at least win one SuperBowl in Detriot, the last time the were to defeat the lions 17-10. My own Sister found the new San Diego Super
Charger song on the web. Kick the Colts Rear end.
Nik,
San Diego, CA
P.S. Colts go bite the dust. Your going to get Zapped and Wapped.
P.P.S. Chargers in the SuperBowl Would be nice.

Ok first of i live in Indiana, and am going to the game this week. Been a die hard fan of the Chargers since watching them play the dolphins in the 80s in the playoffs, this while living near Chicago. MAnning is all hype, anyone could do wut he's doing with the players he has. Just remember this is why the Chargers make the Colts 13-1, Colts won't use their entire playbook (don't wanna tip their hat) and the Chargers in a must win game will actually play to win rather then not to lose.
If the Bolts don't make the playoffs then Marty needs out. Theres a reason this man has no rings

Great win! And as i stated before i knew the Bolts would win. Hopefully we will make it to the playoffs, but we all know the rest of the teams will not want to see San Diego on their schedule. Just win out baby!
