Brees solid at Arrowhead and all season

BobbleheadDrew Brees will make his fourth-career start at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday. Last season, he became the first Chargers quarterback to win in Kansas City since Stan Humphries in 1996...

Brees has played well in one of the NFL’s noisiest stadiums in his first three starts, completing 72 of 110 (.655) for 822 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions for a quarterback rating of 98.4. In last year’s win over the Chiefs, he passed for a career-high 378 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions while completing nearly 76 percent of his pass attempts (28 of 37).

Brees closes in on 25-td season

Brees is just two touchdown passes shy of 25 for the season. It would mark his second-consecutive season with 25 touchdown passes. Dan Fouts, who threw 30 in 1980 and 31 in 1981, is the only other quarterback in team history with at least 25 touchdown passes in back to back seasons. Fouts did it in his eighth and ninth seasons in the league, while Brees is just now completing his fifth NFL season.

Drew BreesBrees sets new career high

Last week against Indianapolis, Brees passed for 255 yards, raising his season total to a career-high 3,347 yards. It marked his third-career 3,000-yard season.

Brees is on pace to end the year with more than 3,800 yards. If he does so, he would become only the second quarterback in team history to pass for more than 3,500 yards, joining Dan Fouts, who did it five times during his Hall of Fame career.

Brees in 300-yard games

Brees has thrown for more than 300 yards in a game twice this season and seven times in his career during the regular season. The Chargers are 2-0 this year and 5-2 overall in games when he surpasses the 300-yard marker.

More TDs than INTs = More Wins

Seven times this season, Brees has thrown more touchdowns than interceptions in a game and the Chargers are 6-1. Last season it happened nine times in the regular season and the Bolts were 8-1 in those nine games. For his career, Brees has had 26 games in which he has thrown more touchdowns than interceptions and the Bolts are 19-7 in those games, a winning percentage of .731.

Brees among league passing leaders

Brees is the NFL’s fourth-most accurate passer with a completion percentage of .656 (297 of 453). The team record for a single season is .657, set by Mark Hermann. Last year, Brees set the second-highest completion percentage mark in team history (.655), completing 262 of 400 pass attempts.

Drew is the NFL’s seventh-leading passer with a quarterback rating of 91.6.

Cool Brees second in NFL on third down

In college, Brees was known as “Cool Brees” for his demeanor in pressure situations. He is the league’s third-leading passer on third down, completing 77 of 119 for 890 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions for a third-down rating of 99.8.

Brees gets an ESPN game ball

Brees earned his first ESPN NFL Prime-Time Game Ball from co-host Tom Jackson after the Chargers 26-17 upset of the previously-unbeaten Indianapolis Colts last Sunday at the RCA Dome. Brees’ numbers weren’t staggering, but he ushered a come-from-behind victory by leading the Bolts to 10 points in the fourth quarter. He may have saved the Chargers season and turned in the biggest play of his career when he scrambled to his left and completed a 54-yard pass to Keenan McCardell midway through the fourth quarter while facing a third-down-and-nine from his own nine yard line. That pass set up a 49-yard field goal by Nate Kaeding field goal four plays later that gave the Bolts a 19-17 lead en route to the win.

I’m amazed on the 360 Drew has done. I will admit I was not much of a Brees fan but he has earned my respect.

If they don't sign Brees to a long term contract after this season, I will be shocked & very disappointed!! He has made it very clear that he wants to lead this team & I believe he's tailor made for a future Super Bowl!! Brees, LT, & Gates....Super Bowl bound!! Go Blots

he quarterbacks the chargers and he is from the BIG TEN whats not to like by the way he was top notch at purdue also.

I have long been distraught due to the quarterback "situation" in San Diego. Most of you don't seem to grasp the concept of how good Drew Brees really is. Sure he's made mistakes, but he wasn't alone. The organization was so quick to turn their back on him, and he took it on the chin by publicly stating his desire to stay in San Diego and lead this team. For that to happen to anyone and for them to react like that, takes immense class. The numbers that Brees has put up this year and last rank among the upper echelon of all NFL quarterbacks. San Diego fans, you better start appreciating having Drew Brees. If not, eventually some other city will.

Other than win a SuperBowl, what more can Drew Brees do to get a long term contract? He is the QB we were hoping Leaf would become. He may not be the 6'5" prototypical QB that every organization dreams of but he makes it up with heart and leadership. Can't complain when you win and have thrown 50 touchdowns to 21 interceptions the past two years.

Okay lets step back a minute. Drew Brees almost single handedly lost the game for the Chargers by throwing a terrible game altering interception and also fumbling the ball which then allowed the Colts to score a TD and take the lead. I think Drew is a good QB but needs improvement. He panicks when he is rushed and needs to work on the fact that he hangs on to the ball too long when pressured by the defense! This has caused the loss of a few key games this season. With a few key elements he "Could" be great but for now he is just good.

I think we should be bowing down to Mr. Turner for saving the game that Drew Brees almost gave away.

What can I say?... He's not a "flashy" quarterback, but who cares? He gets the job done when he needs to. I would rather have a well disciplined, level headed, conservative quarterback who can get us to a Superbowl, than a self-proclaimed, cocky, flashy, "look at me scramble all over the field and score my own touchdowns" kind of a guy, with a T.O. attitude and end up leaving the team worse off then when he came.

Besides, is he not good friends with L.T.? And did he not grow up near him in Texas and play each other in High School Football?

WELL I BELIVE THAT DREW IS DOING A REAL GOOD JOB, AND I CAN'T WAIT TILL THEY SIGNED HIM SO I WONT LOSE MONEY BUYING HIS JERSEY. I BELIVE THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE SIGNED THE CONTRACT A LONG TIME AGO. THE PROBLEM WITH LOSSING BREES IS THAT THE CHARGERS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO STRUGGLE WITH TRAINING A NOTHER QB AND WHY TAKE CHANCES AND IT MIGHT ENDS UP PLAYING LIKE LEAF

Being a Wolverine, I've never been a Brees fan; but that's only because he killed my team every year while he was at Purdue. I knew the kid would be capable, he just needed time. I think he's proven he's the man. As for you dolts who think he almost gave the game away...Tom Brady has had 4 INT's in a game, you think he's gone? All greats have a bad game, down, or throw. It's how they respond that sets them apart. Brees bounces back, you guys should be thanking your lucky stars that he's still there and Rivers is on the bench!

It is true that Drew ALMOST lost the game for us, similar to the way he did in Denver, week 2, which I was at. But, we have not had a QB in SD since Stan the Man. Drew has done nothing but embrace the role of leader in SD. Remember he is on record as saying, "I want to be the QB in SD". He has earned and deserves an extension. Give me an intelligent QB over a gunslinger anyday. Why don't all the nay sayers ask the Raiders what it is like having a unintelligent QB. I will tell you 4-6 wins a season. As a long time season ticket holder, I know what it means!!!

I agree we should sign Drew Brees. He is still young and could be the Franchise player we hve been hoping for. And it is possible for him to still improve and become better which, he needs to do. We should keep putting money into our front line so he has time to throw the ball. Because when he is rushed he tends to panick and make terrible mistakes

Yes, Drew is not perfect, but heck Sunday showed that neither is Peyton Manning. Clearly, the Chargers are not going anywhere w/o a good QB whose 1st name is Drew and last name is Brees. If they get rid of him, they get rid of me as a fan.

It is clear that Drew Brees has established himself as the "franchise quarterback". Longtime Charger fans like myself have seen this franchise succeed with Fouts in the 80's and Humphries in the 90's. We have also seen it fail with duds like Leaf,Harbaugh,Malone,Tolliver,Friez, etc. Brees deserves the long-term deal he wants. The franchise owes it to him and to the fans.

Brees has earned a long-term contract with the Bolts and management should be thinking of ways to deal Rivers to a team like Detroit, who would pay dearly with draft picks and or talent and or cash as they have done so many times before. Does anyone remember Mitchell playing as a Lion?

Isn't is about respect and support? He's obviously got his own talent, and talent around him. Brett Farve could have thrown 3 INT's a game for the last 10 yrs, but as long as he won and made the playoffs, nobody would have called for his head. Brees's worst year came when he had no protection, and no WR corps to mention. Hell, what he has now isn't that spectacular. Our identity is becoming DEFENSE, and the last time we were run crushers, we went to the SB. And lets remember, Humphries was never a top flight NFL QB. But he was good enough. So is Brees, especially with the weapons we put aroud him. He needs to stay, we're going to be in the playoff hunt every year for awhile.

Hold on here. Drew Brees almost lost the game? Give me a break. The INT was a calculated risk. We went for the kill and it was overthrown. I wold rather see the Bolts be aggresive than to wait and have Peyton and Co. stage a comeback. The fumble was not his fault. He was hit from behind and the ball was slapped away. Show me a QB that can hold on to the ball in the situation. The guy has been incredible over the last two years and you haters want to continue to give him grief. 99% of the time we lose, it's due to the O or D line not getting their job done. See our Miami loss, to refresh your mind.

drew brees is the epitome of a cool quarterback. . .able to deliver on the dime in pressure. . .remember, indy?? hehe. . .haven't felt that good since we beat pittsburgh to advance to the superbowl!!. . . sorry, i like philip rivers but we should trade him for a 3rd rounder. . . maybe get a wideout. . .? who knowns. . . that's my 2 cents.

drew brees has to get signed to a long term deal he has proven himself time and time again. If the chargers dont sign him there gambling with phil rivers he hasn't showed us anything yet. I say we trade rivers and get some good safety's and cornerbacks.

Am I the only person that looks at Drew Brees and sees a ghost of Joe Montana or Doug Flutie? Joe could not throw 60 yards, or had the size & speed of the other top QB's. But "Joe Cool" is widely considered the best quarterback in history of football. Why? Because he played smart, was a respectable leader, and stayed cool when the game was on the line. Drew is getting better stats than "Stan the man Humphries". No one is going to remember Humphries if Brees stays in San Diego. Honestly can you name 5 quarterbacks in the NFL that are better than Drew? Carson Palmer and the Manning brothers all have very elite WR corps. Besides our man Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Ben Rothlesburger are the only other two QB's without pro-bowl calibur wide recievers to throw to that have comparable stats. If a WR as good as T.O. came to San Diego, Brees stats would look better and would complete the team more. Drew Brees haters just sit back and watch him become a Hall of Fame bound player in the next 6 or 7 years.
