Chargers left needing some help
Even with a huge victory over the Indianapolis Colts, San Diego could be on the outside looking in, watching the playoffs from home. They can help themselves by winning their final two games, but they will still need some help down the stretch.
At 9-5, San Diego could win its remaining two games (against the Chiefs and Broncos) and still be shut out of the playoffs. San Diego currently trails Jacksonville and Pittsburgh for the two AFC wild-card berths and will need outside help to advance to he playoffs.

To tell you the truth, I will probably be very disappointed if we don’t make the playoffs. But today’s win has given me great satisfaction. For me could be the greatest win of the season. I will be skipping and jumping to work in the morning. BOLTS RULE!
Sam (December 18, 2005 10:10 PM)
It will be a sad thing if the chargers finish with 11 wins and dont make the playoffs. The way they played against the colts was impressive after the the horrible performance against Miami last week. However, here is something interesting. As much as we all hate the Raiders if they can somehow beat the Broncos next week and the Chargers win against the Chiefs than the game against Denver will determine who wins the division. Otherwise this is what they are faced with
if Steelers win both their games Chargers are eliminated because they lost in week 5 when they played.
Jacksonville has not been playing great lately. If they look past houston they could lose and be tied with chargers if chargers win next sunday.
Overall there are a variety of factors but nonethless Chargers are not done yet. The odds are against us but than again, they were today against Indy.... keep the faith GO CHARGERS

I'm a relatively new Chargers fan, but I can't tell you how happy I was to see them win today. We should have a new Chargers anthem -- ever hear that School House Rocks song, "Electricity?"
"Electricity, E-lec-tri-city..."
Can't wait to see them in the Playoffs...Actually, I just can't wait to see what happens next week.
Harold J. Johnson (December 18, 2005 10:31 PM)
If da' bolts do not make the playoffs this game put a nice taste in my mouth after that miami loss. What is going to happen to Brees after this season? Rivers?
Todd (December 18, 2005 10:47 PM)
I have been looking at the tie-breaking scenarios and all anyone is talking about is that the final playoff spot will go to either the chargers or steelers. I don't understand this. Under the tie-breaking scenario section it says that:
TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM OR AMONG DIVISION WINNERS
1. Head-to-head, if applicable.
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
The Chargers and Jags didn't play this year and if the chargers win their last 2 games and the jags lose 1 of their last 2 then the chargers will finish 9-3 in conference and the jags would be 8-4. However, under the "clinching scenarios for week 16" section it says the jags clinch a playoff spot with a win. Can someone explain this?
Matt Malone (December 18, 2005 10:59 PM)
I have a question. If the Chargers tie with Jackonville, who wins the tiebreaker and the 7th seed if Pittsburgh wins their 2 remaining games.
Robert (December 18, 2005 11:01 PM)
Read the tie breaking procedures and you will find that if there is a 3 way tie between the Chargers, Jags and Steelers the Steelers would be the outside team looking in brecause head to head only matters if all 3 teams played each other. The first tie breaker between the 3 would be the Confrence record and the Chargers would be 9-3 the Jags 8-4 and the Steelers 7-5. Go Chargers
Robert Perkins (December 18, 2005 11:01 PM)
I thought I wasn't crazy. Thanks. Still doesn't make sense that everywhere you read it says that all Jacksonville has to do is win and get in.
Matt Malone (December 18, 2005 11:06 PM)
Jacksonville clinches if the win Saturday because even if they lose the next gamethe worst they could do would be a 3 way tie with with the Chargers and the Steelers and they would be in because the Steelers would lose that tie breaker and the Jags would be in.
Robert Perkins (December 18, 2005 11:11 PM)
Todd, I think it is because the would be ahead of the Steelers, but I don't know.
Brian (December 18, 2005 11:12 PM)
RIGHT ON!!! So, all the chargers have to do is win their next 2 games (tough games but no tougher than today) and get a loss from EITHER the steelers or jags and we're in! Go Chargers!!
Matt Malone (December 18, 2005 11:19 PM)
Of course, if Denver loses to the Raiders then (if the chargers win out) the Chargers would be Division Champs. I can't believe I am saying this, but Go Raiders!
Matt Malone (December 18, 2005 11:31 PM)
Okay, enough with all the playoff talk...LET'S JUST BEAT THE CHIEFS FIRST and stuff the sh!@#$$ out of that tailback whose attitude reveals that he may be the next T.O.hole!
Burt Bulos (December 18, 2005 11:38 PM)
You are right, lets not get too far ahead of ourselves. The Chiefs' last home loss in December was Dec. 15, 1996!! Pretty amazing. However, the Chargers have a knack of ending streaks. They ended the patiots 21 game home win streak in Week 4 and we all know what happened with the Colts this week. Go Chargers!
Matt Malone (December 18, 2005 11:52 PM)
It doesn't matter what month it was in, we swept the Chiefs last year, and we can do it again this year.
Yes, go Raiders this week!
...and a little help from Cleveland would be nice too (seeing as Minnesota couldn't pull their head out!)
Mike (December 19, 2005 12:43 AM)
I am as a big a fan as anyone here. However, even I have come to grips with the unlikely hood of a playoff birth. If we played these chump teams all season like everyone else we would be on top looking down too. However, that's not the case. The Jaguars, are not that good. Heck if we had played houston twice, Tenesse twice, Clevlend, Jets, Arizona, Baltimore and San Fransico I'd like to think we would be better than the Jags 10-4.
We need to finish strong this year, hope for the best. Then go sign two shut down corners and make our Super Bowl run next year.
Larry Weeks (December 19, 2005 05:59 AM)
I HATE THE RAIDERS...........
BUT LET'S GO. THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO IS BEHIND YOU ALL THE WAY THIS TIME!
Marcus Robinson (December 19, 2005 06:57 AM)
I know that we are all excited after the AMAZING win and are anxious to get in the playoffs but before we start worrying about scenarios we need to take care of our business first. It would be pointless to think about what Jacksonville and Pittsburgh do if we don't beat BOTH KC and Denver. They will both be tough but I think that they will do it and I also think that we are due for some luck. The Jags are hurting so it may not be as impossible as we think....if we do our part.
The best that we can do is take care of our games and hope for the best.
Steve (December 19, 2005 07:23 AM)
to tell u the truth, the chargers have been kidding themselfs the whole season. they have always been known as failures, and they need to recognize that their franchise is a championshis-less joke. it all about the RAIDERS, GO RAIDERS
Ivan (December 19, 2005 07:59 AM)
Yo Ivan- At least Charger fans can spell...that said, next weekend will be one of the few times in my life I'll be pulling for your "winning" franchise. True, the Chargers have never won a Super Bowl and should have at least once: When the Raiders came to town in 1980 and beat us 34-27 then went on to beat a Philadelphia team San Diego probably would have torn apart too, but we'll never know. As for today, I like the Chargers' chances a bit better than the Raiders to win a Super Bowl in the near future.
Dan (December 19, 2005 08:30 AM)
There is one tactic I think the Chargers have to get the next couple of wins and we've all seen the pattern in previous wins.
LT (if healthy) must have big first half and possibly a little 3rd qtr action to wear the pursuit down -- then send in the "Burner" Turner and pound them. You saw what happen yesterday when that combo was there.
In the Patriots game, oh my, did Turner cream those guys, they literally bounced off him (like birds do when they fly into a window).
Same thing in the Raiders game at home. Turner is going to be a starter one day and he plays like it when he gets on the field.
I love LT and would like to see him rack up yards, but games here on out, it's about winning as a team and the combination has produced wins every time.
QP (December 19, 2005 08:39 AM)
alright you guys...i can't believe that we pulled that win off...that was EXCELLENT!! and it was even better cuz my cuzin hopped onto the colts bandwagon and was all "the colts are gonna stomp the chargers" NOPE!! that was an excellent victory for the defense...and not to mention Turner..that guy is a BEAST! that 83 yard TD run was our season saver..thanks turner for your greatness. About the whole Brees and Rivers situation. Sign Brees on a long-term contract, and trade Rivers and someone else to the Ravens for All-Pro cornerback Chris McAlister..ok SPanos? DO THAT!! if you do...hello great pass defense, and HELLO SUPERBOWL XLI!!!GO BOLTS!!
BarrettinOregon (December 19, 2005 10:30 AM)
Funny how a great win gives many of us short term memory loss. How soon we forget the 3 costly coaching errors - 4 if you count our lack of preparation for Miami - that have cost us this season. We could have, and should have, been 12-2. With our talent many coaches like ours could have won - we just need a coach with killer instinct who will get us to the next level. Shitanhiemer is not that coach.
RICKO (December 19, 2005 11:12 AM)
I know it would be nice to get into the playoffs and I know we need help, but if we do get in, this team is not afraid of anyone, we are a better road team than anyone. I mean look at our schedule....
Fred Soriano (December 19, 2005 11:45 AM)
I agree with Fred...
If we sneak in somehow, watchout baby! We have been proven with our tough schedule! I believe that we are not only going to get into the playoffs but we will more likely see Indy again at the AFC Championship Game. Jacksonville and Pittsburg may want to keep winning just so they cannot see us at the playoffs! But I have a hunch, one of them will slip. SHOW ME YOUR LIGTNING BOLTS!
Ben Chavez (December 19, 2005 12:01 PM)
Basically for the Chargers to make the playoffs they need to win out and Pittsburgh needs to lose at least one and Jacksonville needs to lose too. Both teams play soft teams compared to what we gotta face...At KC than Denver. But we can beat both of them no question. But we will need some help. Now if the Raiders stop being inept and auctally beat someone which i doubt considering they are pathetic this season, than the West is up for grabs. Cause i dont think Denver will stand a chance against us when we play our best. Sunday's game against the best offensive team in the nfl will attest to that. Houston can beat Jacksonville. I know we all hate to rely on other teams to help us but all we need to do is get in the playoffs. Theres no one in the playoffs we cannot beat. Only team i feared was Indy and we mutilated them. Keep the faith and the comment about the coach, have you been watching the games lately. When has he ever gone for it on 4th down. Martyball is dead he is not the same coach. The guy has more wins than anyone active today (like 187 i think). I have faith he can take us to the Superbowl. 1st things 1st but lets take care of KC Denver and anyone else who steps in our path.
david barnett (December 19, 2005 12:06 PM)
First things first, the Bolts need to focus on KC and Denver and hope that some other team will suffer a setback. It's sad, but I honestly think that San Diego is a much better team than their record shows because all defeats have come towards the final ticks of the game. What really upsets me is that my beloved Chargers do not get the credit they deserve. I've read all articles on the net and on the newspaper and all they mention is the Colts poor play. This is absurd, they played poorly because we took it to them and yet there's no mention of their dominant play. It'll be a shame if we don't make the playoffs, but it'll be even worse if the Colts win the Superbowl because we are the better team!!!
Carlos (December 19, 2005 12:29 PM)
There are 5 games left out of the Chargers control (Den, Jac-2, Pit-2). We only need one of those games to go our way, and keep winning. Maybe Jacksonville will rest up on the final game if it means nothing to them.....
Robert (December 19, 2005 03:21 PM)
We can make the playoffs with two wins and a jville loss no matter what Pittsburgh does... Go Bolts!!!!!
Tom (December 19, 2005 03:34 PM)
the last two games for our bolts are very winable for this team.jacksonville is weak right now and has to play the titans yet. the titans with steve mc nair will beat j-ville.pittsburgh plays the browns this game will be very tough for the steelers. the bolts WILL BE IN THE PLAYOFFS ALL THREE TEAMS END AT 11&5 THE STEELERS ARE OUT. and one other thing the broncos have not looked too sharp.GO BOLTS

Yesterday was my birthday and I got the best gift in the world... Merriman and crew smacking the Colts. But like coach said, "One play, one game at a time boys" lol
Van (December 19, 2005 05:09 PM)
you probably won`t let this comment through because you don`t want to here the truth but kc is alot better team and you don`t stand a chance at kc sorry bolts
randy (December 19, 2005 07:18 PM)
Hey Van,
I guess you didn't see the Chargers vs. the Chiefs earlier in the season...yeah, the one where Merriman knocked Priest Holmes into yesterday...guess you didn't see the last few weeks where the Chiefs defense got rolled by the Giants and Cowboys...
Back to business, Chargers must beat the Chiefs down...period...we'll worry about Denver next week.
Regarding our playoff scenario...at the end of the season you always look at teams that are beginning to ascend...to "get it"...and the Browns are starting to get it...the Browns have an excellent shot at the Steelers this week...division games are toss ups and the Browns/Steelers rivalry is maybe the best in the league...get ready for an upset...you heard it hear.
Regarding Jacksonville...they are dropping off and The Titans are beginning to ascend...Houston also has a decent shot, especially at home and coming off a win...both divisional games...the Chargers will have the opportunity given to them...they just have to win out...and about those Raiders...come on, you owe us one for that Holy Roller sh&**%$#...go you RAIDER BASTARDS GO!!!
Burt (December 19, 2005 08:04 PM)
its kind of funny that all the charger fans have this mind set that they can beat kc and den, when in fact you just dont really know whats gonna happen until you actually play them, heck us steelers fans are not even thinking playoffs bcoz we have to take care of clev and det. take it one game at a time bolts fans? coz in the nfl nothing is for sure, just like you taught you were gonna cake walked all over miami? but you lost! start talkin playoffs when you actually know your in! "on any given sunday any team can play like super bowl champs just like what your bolts did yesterday" well just have to sit and see what happen come new years day! GO STEELERS....

First, I can't believe the poor spelling and grammar by all of you bloggers! Does anyone do spell checks or at least read what you have written before submitting your blog?
And it shall be written...Lightning Bolts shall descend upon all those non-believers and smite them down in the end days!!!
What a grand performance against the Colts. But the loss to Miami was based on two bad plays, one by the Schott on the 4th down attempt and one kickoff return fumble. Both costly mistakes. But we're all human. Mistakes are made. Perfection is difficult. But Faith is the key. We've certainly got as much talent as any team in the league and more than most but we must make the most of the talent or its all for naught. Focus Lightning Bolt Mind energy for the losses we need by either Pittsburgh or Jacksonville... Remember, as devoted fans we are the 12th player on the field. Let's look to higher energy to make the difference. Its a potent and effective tool. The Chargers deserve the right to go to the playoffs. Thay are no doubt one of the best teams in the league on both sides of the ball, and they've just proved that fact.
Gordy (December 19, 2005 10:16 PM)

Ok Charger Bloggers - I just read this entire stream and the J-ville situation is still fuzzy. Assuming we win out, I think we need a Denver loss to Oakland, or a Pittsburgh loss in one of their next two, Or two J-ville losses***? They play Bush lottery teams so that isn't going to happen. They suck but those teams are now losing with a mission.
***We have a better conf record than J-Ville, but a few entries posted say they only need one win. Maybe they tie break Win agst Pitts, and then Pitt tie break wins agst us?
Dan Hatch (December 20, 2005 06:03 AM)
lets just beat up on KC and then beat up on denver before we get excited about the playoffs.............
ejaguila (December 20, 2005 07:33 AM)
The Chargers have played with more heart than anytime that I can remember! We need to show all the doubters that San Diego is the team to beat! Let the chips fall where they may, we know we are a championship team.
Cliff (December 20, 2005 08:36 AM)
Here is the playoff scenario Loyal Bolt Fans. The below applies given that the Chargers WIN BOTH upcoming games with KC and the Donkey's.
1. A Denver loss to the Raiders and Chargers will give the AFC WEST Crown to the BOLTS.
2. Either (1) loss from either J'ville or Pittsburgh will give the Bolts an invite.
Even when we tie with the Jags we will have the better Coference record.
The Bolts are a battle tested TEAM that will damage many teams in the postseason. I'm hoping for the WEST CROWN in 2 weeks, or at the worst, a wild card entry. Keep the faith and lets roll to the playoffs.
D-RON (December 20, 2005 11:17 AM)
Chargers made us proud against indy ,that was one heck of a game. Hats off to the whole team. if the bolts make it to the playoffs look out cause there on a roll. lights out for the opposition.CHARGERS RULE FORVER AND EVER!!!!!
mlbolts (December 20, 2005 03:30 PM)
Yes I believe if the Chargers win the last two games they will be in the playoffs. But they HAVE to take care of business. No more Drew Brees panicking and fumbling or throwing interceptions. No more bad play calls in key situations. and no more leaving the opponents recievers wide open on 3rd downs!!!! We need to step up and play like we know we can and have proven we can! No more stupid mistakes to give a way the game and we not only go to the Super Bowl but we win it!!!! GO BOLTS I believe you can do it!!
