Most 10-win teams ever?
By one measure of excellence, the NFL may never have been better than in 2005.
With one week to go in the regular season, 11 teams have reached the coveted 10-win mark – Carolina, Chicago, Cincinnati, Denver, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, New England, New York Giants, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Tampa Bay.
This weekend, San Diego, Dallas, Kansas City and Washington can join the group of 10-game winners. If all four win, the 15 teams with at least 10 wins apiece would be the most 10-win teams in a season since the 16-game schedule was instituted in 1978.
A look at the seasons with the most 10-game winners since 1978:
Season 10-Win Teams
2003 13
1986 12
1991 12
2000 12
1985 11
1988 11
1992 11
2001 11
2005 11*

What ever happened to 10 wins and you're in??

Lets make sure to be one of them. This year it doesn't earn you a playoff spot. But I'd rather be in that top 15, then in the bottom 17.

10-6 is a very good record;too bad this year the Chargers might be 10-6 and miss the playoffs. Says a lot about the level of play in 2005 in the NFL.

More teams are winning 10 you say. I say more teams are losing 10. Parity?
Andrew Hodgson (December 28, 2005 08:55 PM)
It's not that the quality of play is that much higher, it's that there are so many really horrible teams. In '03 there were 4 teams with a record of 4-12 or worse. In '04, there were 3. This year, there will be 6 or 7, depending on whether the Raiders lose. Teams fortunate enough to play the punching bags (or better yet, share a division with them) reap the rewards.
Ultimately, this will create an every-other-year championship rotation between the top two contenders in any division, because the team that came second the previous year (either wildcard or no playoffs) will have such an advantage of schedule that they will almost certainly win the division the following year.
What everyone forgets about parity is that the draft and the salary cap work against each other. Higher draft picks signed to fat contracts suck up cap space and force out some of the meat and taters players that need to show up for the team to win.

10 wins or not, this team is going to be great. You will see more of this team in the playoffs in the future!!!!!!

The fact that this team--one of the few Charger teams I felt could stand up to anyone in the past 30 years--isn't in the playoffs is a sign of only one thing...Marty is NOT a game-day coach.

good point andrew, i cant remember having this many BAD teams......and yes shawn, 2006 will be OUR YEAR, BANK ON IT!

A couple years ago the Dolphins got 11 wins and didn't get in the playoffs. The AFC is that good.

The Super Chargers had a great season this year. If we win ten games i find it an accomplishment. Having the second hardest schedule in the NFL this season, and coming out with ten wins i think is really good. Next year is our year to go all the way! SAN DIEGO SUPER CHARGERS!

My thought is we would have 11 wins if LT was healthy. The reality is LT's injury was the key reason the Chargers will not be in the playoffs...MEMO to A.J. shore up the OL this offseason - Give LT something similar to what Emmitt Smith had in Dallas and the skies the limit; and don't forget the DB and SS issue.

can we please avoid the idea of a ten win season when we are still a 9 win team. let's wait and watch. unfortunately, we thought we were an automatic 11 win team once we beat indy.
Bolts 'n' Booz (December 29, 2005 08:29 AM)
We'll get the 10 wins. Just think of what it could have been if we had a secondary that could shut down a passing game, consistently. Chargers go deep into the playoffs in '06, if Smith keeps the team intact, and adds a shut down corner, or two.
Longshanks (December 29, 2005 09:02 AM)
wouldn't 9-7 give the Chargers a higher pick in the draft.

I feel so sad that, the Chargers are elimnated from Playoff contention! Luckily next season, those teams come to San Diego and saves the team alot trips out East.

San Diegan Fan of Chargers
See you all next year!

I am very happy for our beloved Chargers. We will get 10 wins and hold our heads up high. Because this is just the beginning of bigger and better things for next year...I can't wait.
Marco Arrington (December 29, 2005 10:10 AM)
we could be more like 13-3 or 14-2 if we could have closed out those game we just gave away earlier in the season.
No excuses, the secondary flat out stinks up the joint!!!!
Hey, here's a cople suggestions:1. Put Jammer at a safety spot or trade him, he gets way too many flags.
2. trade philip rvers for lavarr arrington of the redskins straight up.( shawn merriman and he have a close friendship and that would make us that much better)
