« Bolts' bandwagon slowing down | Main | Schottenheimer looks for win #187 »

No one said it would be easy

Before the season many of the ‘experts’ didn’t think the Chargers would fare any better then we stand today.

Mostly it was attributed to the difficult schedule the Bolts faced, opponents with a .555 winning percentage and a record of 132-106. A league-high four of the Chargers opponents were coming off byes. The five east coast games, yada yada yada!

Here’s a look at what some national publications thought the team would do in 2005. The predicted records are in parenthesis.

Sports Illustrated
Chiefs (9-7)
Chargers (9-7)
Broncos (7-9)
Raiders (7-9)

The Sporting News
Broncos (10-6)
Chiefs (9-7)
Chargers (8-8)
Raiders (7-9)

Street & Smith's
Broncos
Charger
Chiefs
Raiders

Pro Football Weekly
Chargers (10-6)
Chiefs (9-7)
Broncos (9-7)
Raiders (6-10)

A win over the Denver Broncos on Saturday would allow the Chargers to finish the season 7-2 in their last nine games. It would be a strong finish to a season that started 0-2 and at one point saw the Chargers at 3-4.

One thing for sure, it's been a tough season no matter how you look at it.

Oh, one last thing... I can’t help but laugh that we’re the #1 google result in a search for “difficult schedule

Google

Found two of the San Diego Union Tribune predictions:*

Kevin Acee (10-6)
Jay Paris (10-6)

Chargers have had the toughest schedule in ’05:

San Diego … 133-107
SF & Wash … 131-109
Green Bay … 130-110
Oakland … 129-111

The AFC West is toughest division in NFL: .567 (34-26)

I was one who thought 10 games would get us into the playoffs. I never expected the Broncos to play as good as they have. I guess its part of being in the AFC west. I think the Chargers, Chiefs and Broncos are top NFL teams.

If we, at least, beat Denver on Saturday, we would have switched standings with Denver from last year (SD - 12 and 4, Denver at 10 and 6). So Denver got the benefit of the easier schedule and won the division this year. So what? We're now even!

This means that next year will be the year that will determine who the better team is. Personally, I think if Drew Breese and our young team matures a bit more for next year, with some improvement in our pass coverage, we will not only own the AFC West but we can and should make the SuperBowl.

SHOW ME YOUR LIGHTNING BOLT, BABY!!!

10-7 Is a great finish for an AFC West team with the most difficult schedule in the league. Here's to next year: same talent, easier teams.

all I can say is we are finally on track with 2 winning seasons in a row and we showed that with our schedule that was so tough we still came out on top playoffs or not give this schedule to Indy and I bet they couldn't handle it like our bolts did.........thanks for an awesome year ......GO CHARGERS BAYEEEE

You know what. I don't care what other people say about our Chargers. They did a great job this year. I already got to watch the best game of the year when our BOLTS beat the Colts when no one else in the NFL could. Just wait until next year.

Yes, we ended up right where most of us thought we would be in terms of record. The problem is that we won where people thought we'd lose, and we lost where people assumed we'd win. Anyone who says we didn't look ahead against Miami is ignoring the reality. And the huge let down in Kansas City after the huge win in Indy is the same issue. Not finishing off games (Pittsburg, Dallas, Denver, Philly, etc.) is the same issue... there's something missing at the top... whether it's not keeping the team focused or not paying attention to what's working and what's not... whatever it is, there needs to be some better preparation and focus from the coaching staff and players. This team showed the ability to beat anybody, but didn't show the effort each week.

Thanks for fighting hard Chargers! Watch out for Vincent Jackson this Saturday vs. the Broncos! He will be our "deep threat" next season! Looking forward to a more favorable schedule next season. We should use our trade opportunities to strengthen our secondary!

Something is off track when you beat most of the elite teams you play and loose to the lesser teams. The Chargers have the best TE RB combo in the NFL, a 10 sack star on D and fail to win the division??? The Chargers need a big play WR and a strong O-line for next season, not to mention a star shut down CB. If the Chargers do this, they should be fine. It's absurd to say the Chargers should win the super bowl next season, however Marty's job is to have the players ready and prepaired to give the effort to play each and every game and I did not see that this season, I hope he evolves and takes his coaching to the next level in 06 & 07.

thanks, for all Chargers, your fans never die.
CHARGER ANY TIME.

Thanks for the excellent year.. i have faith that our Chargers will take in the ups and downs of the '05 season and use them as building blocks for the Championship team we all know they are... Bolts for life!!

Huge fan here in Canada! All I can say is that the Bolts schedule really hurt in the end. With a win at Denver, I will take that 10 and 6 and then look forward to a championship season next year! Those NFL idiots better smooth that sked out for next season because it's a real shame the Chargers won't be in the playoffs this year, not just for the fans, but for the sport! I mean who wouldn't want to see LT, Brees, Gates, Merriman, and the like all in action in the NFL playoffs? Great entertainment. I mean, for the sport alone, it would have been great to see the Chargers in! Watching the season end last week in KC was just a real downer and combine this with the reality of those oh-so-close bad luck losses, well I will bet my house the Bolts give us the best run yet next season! Go Chargers!!!!!

So what if their schedule was tough. I mean they would have been facing those same teams in the playoffs wouldn't they? I just hope we beat the Broncos and Tomlinson scores with 200 yards.

2006 IS THE YEAR OF THE LIGHTING BOLT!!!! STRAP YOURSELVES IN CHARGER FANS.

I was at the Chargers game in KC right behind the players in Row 1. I have to say, I didn't see a hungry team and they played liked they looked.... FLAT

Yo guys....I love the energy on this page, I feelgreat energy just reading these blurbs but anyways, In my opinion, the schedule was NO EXCUSE, because I was AT THE GAMES AGAINST DAL,PIT,DEN,AND MIA and those were all FLUKES that WE LOST we werent beaten....And Ill believe that until the day I die, but I do feel like we had a decent season, and I got Drews autograph and phillip rivers, and IGORs as well...anyway Im feelin a 14-2 season next year WHOEVER FEELS LIKE I DO REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE!!!!!!!!! CHARGERS TILL I DIE

Hello all of my fellow charger worshippers, I moved to Arkansas from San Diego when i was very young and I'm pretty sure I am the only chargers fan in this state. I think the chargers had a decent year, aside from the games when they decided they didn't want to play (miami, KC). But, I think this year was one of those building block seasons. Maybe AJ and Marty will be able to take all the weaknesses that were exposed this season and improve drastically on them in the offseason. Like everyone knows, our main problem is the secondary, I honestly think that if we could sure that up, and play every game like we did in INDY, this is a legitimate superbowl team. We have a multi-million dollar backup sitting on the bench in Phillip Rivers and I think we should trust Drew and give him the long term deal he deserves and use Rivers to get a shut down CB or saftey in there. This is a very exciting time to be a san diego chargers fan, if you look at all the games that we SHOULD HAVE won this year on the schedule that we had, and then look at all the potential improvements that this offseason holds, the future is very bright. I am a San Diego SUPER Charger for life though, win or lose, GO BOLTS!!!

wow! what a up and down year that the bolts gave us, but all i gotta say is i enjoyed every moment and every down of it, it was a very dissappointing feeling after watching the KC game..but we all know that the AFC West is ours next year. cant wait next season. GO BOLTS

Prediction: Chargers 50 - Broncos 20 (Final). What does this mean, nothing because Chiefs will also win and end up with a 10-6 record, they are obviously not as good as we are but managed to whip our butts last week. We will end up splitting with everyone in our division except the Raiders (who are in deap doo-doo). Is our division that good? Yes Are we that average? Maybe. LT hurt for second year in a row is a sign that we have a small window with this team, we need to solidify a Corner, get deeper as an O-Line and fix our Special Teams. Next year we win 10 again, but are in the Post Seasoon.

san diego native that now lives in michigan, I am a lifetime fan who pays 200.00 dollars for NFL ticket. Well the guys that predicted our record were pretty close huh.. it sucks.Of course knowone could have predicted denver to do what they did. Reminds me of the chargers last year.I tell you I am really tierd of people wining about how tough our schedule was. if you want to b the best , you have to beat the best. who wants to compile a bunch of victories over loosers. We will never get respect that way. Im also tired of people wining about our secondary. It's about getting to the quarterback, If you dont there's no corner back that can cover for ever.Remember, if you cant run on someone,,,, like us,,,, you throw on them. Now as far as the chargers main problem,,, its obvious,,, the O line . for the most part they have sucked all year. sub par year for L.T No T.D's or 100 yard games in last 4 try's. Him or the O line ,,,,,What do you think ?.Marty better staighten it out fast,,L.T's window is closing

The schedule is no excuse... they should have had the attitude that they can beat anyone, any place, any time zone. They just didn't do that, they should have, but just didn't get it done. Hopefully they will learn from this season, and will take it all next year!

Kevin is right on concerning the secondary. I think we could use another strong CB, but we already have talent there. If a team knows they can't run, they have to throw. And if you don't get to the QB, receivers will get open and the secondary "gets burned". I don't think LT's window is closing any time soon, but it's obvious that if the line is not there, he's not as effective. Then it becomes a situation where he might try to make something happen and it results in an injury.

It will be sad that at 10-6 we will not be in the playoffs. Who knew that Denver would win so many? That said, I still think we are a better team than Denver. We have more offensive firepower. But...they have a pretty good secondary and we definitely do not. They also have a better QB with a stronger arm. I still think we will win on Saturday because we have a lot of pride and I know our players want to get 10 wins. LT is the best Running back in the NFL however the games we have lost it seems we did not use him enough. You cannot count on Drew Brees passing to win our games. So in conclusion toughen up the front line for LT. Get a better secondary and let Rivers do his thing and we go all the way next year. Go Chargers kick Denvers B#@! I can't wait till next year!

Cool stuff. Keep up the good work. right Cards will Make Circle without any questions: http://www.waroftheworlds.com/ , when Corner Increase Chair Win Coolblooded is feature of White Boy , Increase Do Expect - that is all that Round is capable of Mistery can Fetch Corner
