NFL.com wire reports

Brees knocked out with shoulder injuryChargers quarterback Drew Brees was knocked out of the team's game against Denver with an injured right shoulder, and was replaced by Philip Rivers.

Brees dropped back to pass from his own end zone late in the second quarter and was blindsided on a blitz by safety John Lynch. Brees fumbled and was hit again while going for the ball, which was recovered by Denver's Sam Brandon at the 1. Tatum Bell scored on the next play to give the Broncos a 14-0 lead.

Brees was examined on the sideline, then was taken into the locker room.

Although the Chargers had already been eliminated from the playoffs, coach Marty Schottenheimer didn't plan to use Rivers, a second-year pro, unless Brees got hurt.

Rivers had been in for only one play this year, taking a knee to end a 48-10 win over Buffalo on Nov. 20.

Rivers played in only two games as a rookie in 2004. The fourth pick overall in the 2004 draft, he was obtained from the New York Giants along with a handful of picks for Eli Manning.

I pray Brees is okay. Rivers was bad to begin, but he's doing okay now. His shoulder appeared to pop out, Drew better be okay.

I wish Brees the best. I hope he recovers soon. It’s going to be a long off season.

So, was it a cheer for Rivers, or a cheer against Brees (as CBS commentators suggested)? I'm thinking that 1st round pick of Rivers would have been better if used on the o-line. Brees has gotten blind-sided way too many times this season.

Don't worry 'bout it Brees, we'll get'em next year....

Any update on what the actually injury was? it seem like it was a dislocated shoulder.

I sure hope Brees is okay...I cant endure a full season of Rivers learning how to play in the NFL.

the sack echoed the whole season for the chargers. inconsistancy on the oline. I hope Drew is ok

I hope the best for Drew. To bad we didn't use the first round pick from Rivers for two offensive lineman, for Brees and LT's sake

I'm not sure what game everyone else was watching but for a rookie who took no snaps in practice Rivers looked pretty damn good.

Drew wish you a quick recovery.

I don't think I've been this worried about a player since I watched Garrison Hearst hurt his leg when he played on the Niners. Drew that was such an UGLY play...You have amazing courage to have dove for that ball. We need you man, we'll definitely be praying you are okay.

i hope brees injury isnt really serious because that could end his career in san diego

I think rivers will get traded in the off-season for an offesive lineman or a defensive back.

Drew's shoulder looked really messed up on t.v when it was twisted back like that any yet he still managed to humbly walk off the field immediatley after the play was over by himself. I suddenly have a lot of respect for him. I hope he gets better soon.

drew brees is the chargers future. i wish him a speedy recovery. trade rivers to get a draft pick we can use a good lineman. it was a good yr but could have been better oh well . GO BOLTS

Breeze will be fine, but the Chargers have a long ways to go to be as good and consistant as the Denver Broncos!

For the fans who blamed Drew Brees for our losses, I hope they realized today that even Philip Rivers cannot play with the offensive line we have and he's 6'5". I pray Drew will be okay and get a long-term contract like he deserved a long time ago!

Everyone who gives so much as a squirt of piss about the Chargers better PRAY, PRAY, and go PRAY some more that Drew Brees is OK (ie. no major surgery required to repair torn ligments, muscle tears, that sort of thing). If he's done, it will set the franchise back at least 2-3 years.

Brees is as tough as they get, no worries, Charger fans! WE WILL DOMINATE in 2006!!

There's a chance Brees tore his labrum, so I'm hoping that's not the case. I wish Brees a speedy recovery. I don't think Rivers did too bad, considering everything. Can't expect him to do great things when he hasn't played all season.

brees got messed up.....i think rivers looked good for never really playing b4 if this injury ends brees's career im glad we got rivers

I hope we obtain a good tackle new year. It seems there's always a blind side sack for a fumble. This is what killed us this year. After seeing Rivers play, I'm not sure he's the right guy. His delivery is low just like a 6' quarterback.

There's a very good chance Drew will need surgery...may be difficult for a QB to return to play after this injury! I think Rivers has great potential but watching him look as awkward as he did at times should give us all even more appreciation for Drew Brees, who is a great QB, a great leader, and a true professional.

I wish Drew Brees well. I love how all of the Charger Band-Wagon jumpers are suddenly jumping ship!

Go Raiders.

Good season some great games and some games the ball just fell the wrong way. Wish to say THANKS to the Charger team and org for 2005.....and express great wishes for 2006 and beyond.
ps get some right side oline help

We're all praying for a speedy recovery for Drew. He's a proven winner and a fine example of what a fierce competitor should be!!! More help on the o-line please, ASAP!! Ditto for our lack-lustre secondary, ASAP!! Any way you slice it, successful franchises need both a solid starting QB AND a backup QB that won't lose the game for you in a pinch. Please SD front office honchos, make it a very busy, efficient, and play-off-focused off-season for our beloved BOLTS !!!!! HAPPY NEW-YEAR 2006 !!!!! GO CHARGERS in 2006!!!!! p.s. Get well soon Mr. Cool Brees, thanks for the 2005 memories fellow CHARGERS & give 'em hell next season!!!!!!!

Breezie, speedy recovery and get strong. your the man that will take us to the promise land!!!! Go Bolts

drew, i was an eagle fan my life until they passed on you, i cheer you on every game, and you are my favorite player in the NFL

Here is wishing that Drews injury is not too bad. Get well fast Drew, we need you to lead this team to the Super Bowl in 2006.

I live and die with this team, we're so close to dominating but also so far away. we must replace godfrey in offseason maybe with vilma. anyway rivers lost trade value in performance to bad we had to showcase him..

For New Years the Chargers should make the following New Years resolutions. 1. Get a oline that can protect brees backside. 2. Learn to hold on to the ball. 3. "Inteligent" Special team players that know to stay in the enzone when your five yards deep and run away from blockers instead of into them. 4. Cornerbacks that can catch the ball when its thown to them, so we can have interceptions too.

Get well soon cool breeze. you are in my prayers. my wish for you is o-line and deep threat receiver. god bless.

Drew, if you read this, i wish you well and hope you have a speedy recovery. As a season ticket holder thank you for an awesome season. We'll make the SuperBowl next year.
To the front office, please get protection for Drew and LT on the Offensive Line next year.
James, i don't see any Charger fans jumping ship.
GO CHARGERS!!!!!

Drew, I will pray for your 100% recovery. You are the best and you deserve the best (AJ - That means get this QB an O'line)

Until today I was sure they should trade Rivers for draft picks, but now we'll have to wait to see how Drew's shoulder is. I hope Drew's shoulder is not too bad and will okay with rest and therapy, but if it needs surgical repair, we'll be in a bind if we trade PR. Amazing how things can change with one play... Get well soo Drew. You're our QB, and we want to keep you. Still can't figure out why we got rid of Cleo Lemon...

Drew's back side hasn't been adequately protected all year, an injury like this was bound to happen. We have got to find a way to protect Drew. I wish Drew the best and I'm looking forward to some good news on his shoulder.

drew, you are awesome! get well soon and we'll get 'em next year!

Drew get well soon. I'll say a prayer for you tomorrow in church. Boy do you think we miss Tony Fonoti.

Drew, ouch! I've suffered the same injury in the exact same way. Judging by the way he was holding his arm it looked like an anterior disslocation. The trainer looked like he got it back in easily enough. I hope the x-rays go well and there is nothing more than just a stretched capsule.

Nobodys jumping ship. Any real Chargers fan knows we are involved in a process. A.J. knows what he is doing and Drew is the QB of the future, that injury is not a career ender for a guy like him.

Get Eric Moulds and Ed Reed in free agency.

Trade Phillip Rivers and Ben Leber to the Jets for Vilma or Abraham.

Pick up Eric Winston and Winston Justice in the draft.

One off season and Superbowl. Keep the faith.
Respect the Bolts.

Drew Brees showed his toughness today. How many quarterbacks have you seen jump into a pile! to get the ball back. It doesn't happen folks.

I wish Drew fast recovery. Thanks to Chargers for all the great games.

Wow, as I read these blogs all week so many of us were hollering to @#*can Breeze and start Rivers. How fast we change and how fickle we are. I remember the 94/95 season the huge outpouring at the Murph when we won the AFC Championship game, supperbowl, what a great season. The next year however San Diego showed our true colors, 5 games into the loosing season we couldent sell 75% of the tickets. Bandwaggoners then and bandwaggoners now...

Hope that he is okay and let's hope that we can get a couple lineman to protect Drew nad LT next year. My prayers are with you, see you in training camp next year.
Santiago, Maria and Eric Cornejo

Drew, it was a tough day at the office today to be certain. Man you are a true game day player, the real deal, an inspiration - every single week.

You'll be ready next season and that's why I'll be watching CHARGERS.

Mr. Brees, you are a true leader. You have brought this team up and helped to make it do a complete 180 turn for the better. This injury will be only temporary and I know you will be back next year at 200% (yes 200%). For the important people reading this, Brees is worth keeping around. He, Mr. Tomlinson, Gates, and McCardell are a stellar group of offensive players that are bound for excellence. GO CHARGERS and here's to the 2006 Super Bowl!

I find it interesting that so many people want to trade Rivers for picks or other players. I think today showed very clearly why every team needs TWO quality quarterbacks. If we didn't have Rivers around, who would've come in for Brees? Certainly the Chargers are far enough under the cap to keep both, so I don't see the logic in getting rid of Rivers, especially when we don't know how serious Brees injury may turn out to be. Does anyone know who the 3rd string QB is?

i heard that it is his rotator cuff that is probably torn - as for the team - we just didn't capitalize this year, but look at next years schedule: losses at KC and Denver, at Cincy and at Seattle, and if we win all our games at home, hello first round bye! Brees - good luck buddy!

I wish Mr. Brees a speedy recovery and hope he finds the long term contract he deserves in San Diego. By the way, we can't rip on our line too much since weve been struggling due to injuries. I say the front office needs to evaluate Brees and trade a QB for a DB, the Bolts have had great success with drafting o-linemen in late rounds so no need to waste a 1st round pick.

I think both Brees and Rivers looked about the same in today. I don’t see how many of you guys can say Rivers was terrible, if you say that you have to say Drew was terrible. They both looked the same in all honesty. Keep in mind it was wet and rainy and blitzed on just about every play. The O-nline looked to play the same for both QBs, not very good on the left side. I hope Brees recovers quickly and if he doesn’t have serious damage he has earned the right to be the starter. But if the shoulder thing turns out to be serious, I’m comfortable with Rivers. Rivers being the backup for the last two years should help him get up to speed for next year if he is called. For everything to hit the fan today... we at least have some options. Get better soon Brees. Rivers if you’re next season I’m behind you. Better days ahead! It seemed like yesterday we had a dominate team.

For a young man that had taken one snap all year to come in and, play "courageously" like he did. I feel very comfortable about our QB situation. Rivers showed that patented quick release that he is famous for and played well considering the circumstances. He is capable of great achievements in the NFL.

it's gonna be a long offseason. drew's no humphries, but he's a machine, and we'll see him lead this team in the years to come. i guess it's back to reality, no more week long worrying about what the outcome of sunday will yield.

Drew! I love you. I know you'll be back. You are the heart and soul and future of our team. A true fighter and leader! I'll pray for you, and see you in August.

The Chargers are building up a great team and considering our schedule, I think we did pretty well. Sure the playoffs would've been great but we still had a good season overall. We need some help in a few areas but they'll get that taken care of before next season starts. Hopefully Brees will come back at 100% and take San Diego to the show next year! He's earned the #1 spot as far as I'm concerned!!

Hope bress gets better, same for LT playing with a cracked rip all those last four games, LT is the best back in the league playing with a injury that serious.

I think Rivers looked pretty good taking into account he hasn't taken a single snap all season long. I think he has to be given a chance to prove himself, especially if Brees is seriously injured (think about Pennington). But the team should keep both of them because they could back each other up.

hopefully brees will recover with out lasting damage to that shoulder. That injury is huge and Most likely he will need surgery to repair it. Now this comes on the last game of the year when brees is due to sign the HUGE contract. Now we wont know for a while if his situation is like chad pennington's, wich could mean his career is OVER. Now to River's, if he's traded off it will be early in the offseason, which means we wont know the outcome of Brees yet. So now we have come, full circle again. Hope we dont get burned. we wont know how brees is going to be, until he plays a few games next year. If he plays next year. Now to marty. I like marty, but you know what they say,, The buck stops here. And thats Marty's door.one more year marty,,, thats it!!. And last,, the Offensive line.Quit screwing around and FIX it. Im sick of it, and so is L.T. even though he doesnt say so.our'O' line sucks. Im a San diego native but live in michigan. Our 'O' line and L.T. reminds me of the Lion's 'O' line and Barry. And thats not good. GET'R'DONE MARTY

My wife is a physical therapist...the way Drew's arm was positioned she believes there shouldn't be rotator cuff problem, which would be complicated (See Chad Pennington)...if it's simply the labrum, it would be fine...maybe some surgery but it's more like a sprain rather than a rotar cuff tear...He should be fine!

With a healthy Drew and the talent of the skill position players...the Chargers must develop a dominant offensive line, they really missed Roman Oben...1st priority during offseason. 2nd priority...playmaking free saftey..top three in the 2006 draft are very good. On Defense front seven will be dominant. If Randall goes...think Jets would be interested in Rivers for Jonathan Vilma?

My best wishes go out to Drew and I hope for a very speedy recovery.

I don't understand the whole Rivers vs. Brees controversy. Brees isn't perfect, but he's made the Pro Bowl 2 years straight and has earned the starting job and a good contract. Period. The reasons that the Bolts are not going to the playoffs are mainly due to a soft secondary and poor special teams, not Brees. Mr. Rivers has great potential, but has showed little (not his fault) earned nothing. Even Rivers admits that Brees has earned the starting job. Best wishes Drew. I hope that you heal up well and get the contract that you deserve.

Come on Brees you's my boy i hope you ready for the season opener next so you can get back to handing off to the best back in football and start throwing it to the best Tight End in football

Drew, I'm a longtime Charger fan. I hope you recover fully. My prayers are with you.

Drew I wish you well and hope that you recover quickly. For those of you that say Rivers "looked awkward" etc. etc. This is a guy who hasn't taken a snap in a "real" game all season. He did very well considering. His throws were very accurate and you can tell he has been paying attention while he waits patiently on the sideline. Rivers CAN be a great QB if we decide to keep him. I worry about Drews arm. He already has a weak throwing arm and now you gotta wonder?! My best to Drew and I hope his surgery goes well.

For some reason my post to this blog was suppressed, probably because I mentioned the late hit on Drew Brees by number 61 of the Broncos. Brees wasn't injured because he dove for the ball, but because a 300 pound tackle jumped on him while he was laying defenseless on the ground. Apparently this blog condones that kind of behavior and tries to cover it up. Look on the video posted on the blog! It's obvious that 61 dived on Brees and didn't even notice the fumble until later. But that's OK with this blog.

How time changes things not to long ago everyone was blaming Brees for our loses. Now he is the greatest thing with two legs. He did suprise me and was come back player of the year, but his carreer was on the line. his numbers dropped the next year not all his fault. Now greed has taken hold of him. Rivers came in and did fine for the situation he was in. Rivers will do better this yaer I have faith. Stop crying over Brees he was offered what he was worth and it wasnt good enough. Goodbye Brees and hello Rivers
