Tale of two halves, nevertheless a win
They said it couldn’t be done. The Chargers brought their “A” game to claim 26-17 victory over the high flying Indianapolis Colts at the RCA Dome. The Bolts could not do anything wrong in the first half. However, they did not do much right in the second half until relief running back Michael Turner runs for a 83 yard touchdown to put the game in the bag.
As they say... It’s never over till it’s over, Don’t give up too soon; there may still be a chance to succeed.
The win kept San Diego (9-5) alive for an AFC wild-card spot and prevented Denver from clinching the AFC West. It also allowed the Colts (13-1) to rest starters for the final two games of the season, having already clinched home-field advantage for the AFC playoffs.
And it certainly led to champagne celebrations by members of the 1972 Dolphins, the only team to complete a season undefeated.

The bolts kicked their A$$E$. The playoffs would be great but this win will live on forever.
Thx Chargers.
Robert Perk (December 18, 2005 01:39 PM)
HECK YES! hopefully the chargers can keep this up against KC and Denver to pull in (hopefully) a playoff berth. WOO!
Emily (December 18, 2005 01:40 PM)
That was awesome........But. The Chiefs will just as, if not more difficult to beat next week. If the Chargers show any signs of droping off next week then the season will be over for them. Keep it up! Defense!!!!
Gian (December 18, 2005 01:41 PM)
DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!
What a great job by the coaches preparing and the defense executing. In that place, against that offense..Edgerin James only 25 yds. Two halves? Not on the defensive side.
And Nate....great day!!

GREAT GAME!! Good to come back and win it...although LT wasn't smiling leaving the field...anyone know what's up?
Phil Rizzo (December 18, 2005 01:48 PM)
Exciting win. But I have 2 major concerns.
1)Brees tends to get excitable and throws up ducks. He is about 2 seconds of grace under pressure from being a great QB.
2)Hopefully, LT isn't injured. If so, MT can fill in beautifully. In fact, LT has had a number of games this year when he wasn't all that pivotal. His cutbacks are so abrupt that he's one awkward cutback away from being a spectator. He often makes me nervous. Platooning LT & MT will be more productive than just LT. This will force the opposing defense to adjust to 2 different running styles.

The great thing about this game was that the Chargers found a way of overcoming some MAJOR mistakes (i.e. turnovers) and kept a cool enough head to re-take the lead. Great win for the Bolts!

NATE getting nuts, making up for that Jets loss last year. Michael "The Burner" is just nuts... LIGHTS OUT is clincally insane. The man is a beast.
IT may be hard to acomplish this year... but we are a Super Bowl team. If it doesn't happen this year, it will the next.
Max (December 18, 2005 01:51 PM)
What an incredible win! Sadly, I don't like the Bolts' playoff hopes, as both Pittsburgh and Jacksonville have cake schedules to close out the season, and the Chargers have a tough one. I believe Jacksonville has Houston next week :( Well, we can always hope for a miracle.
Jason Lomberg (December 18, 2005 01:51 PM)
Cake Schedules...Browns always play Pitt Close...especially at home...and did you see that Houston and Tenn. both played really well today...Jax barely beat the Smith lead 9'ers...we just gotta win out...as Jesse Jackson would say...Keep hope alive.
Phil Rizzo (December 18, 2005 01:54 PM)
i've been saying for weeks that the chargers had the best and probably the last chance for anyone to end the colts perfect season. but more importantly, it tells the truth to all that the BOLTS are a team to respect and you better know it... i'm proud of all those guys for playing like they do every game! go bolts!!!!

BOLTS OVER THE COLTS!
This team loves to play as underdogs. Nice to see pressure on Defense today. Meriman, Jammer, Foley, Williams, and the rest of the D. Making the playoffs would be nice, but this was a great response to last weeks performance. BTW, did anyone hear that 20+ players had an IV after players caught the flu last week? Could explain the flat performance against Miami.
Bryan (December 18, 2005 01:54 PM)
There was a gleam...and we grabbed it.
This team showed why the true believers in our team stayed on the fence. Everyone who had faith in us, whether they paint their faces in blue and gold or not, should be applauded for staying the course.
We stood on the battlefield, against all those people who couldn't see us on top, who refused to listen to us and refused to take the chacne that we could succeed.
It wasn't about proving them wrong. It was about confirming that we were right. We were always right.
It's not over, not by a longshot. Kansas City is already planning, already making the schemes and plans. We went in there last year and beat them, we beat them this year, and we can do it again. But we must put this victory, as good as it was, behind us and focus on the next task. Kansas City must be annhilated, and we must do it.
But for tonight...
...let's celebrate! Go Chargers!!!

great game today. Chargers weren't going to take the Colts lightly today glad they didn't. the bolts still got a shot to get into the playoffs I'm not doubting them for a second. great win.
Patrick (December 18, 2005 02:17 PM)
With every second clicking down to ZERO, i gasp and wondered " can this happen to the BOLTS again? Another close game lost"..but once the ball was grabbed by mr.Jammer, who is known for his many blown coverages and pass interferences, but the man came through..we must focus on the chiefs and let the steelers/jaguars make a mistake like we did against miami. Its those teams with losing record that we all should be afraid of because they have nothing to lose and would love to ruin our season. GO BROWNS for next week . CHARGERS FOREVER :)
Leon (December 18, 2005 02:17 PM)
Great Win! But when will the pundits give the Chargers credit for making Indy look sick. All I heard on TV was how bad the Colts were playing. Could it be the team on the other side of the field causing the bad play????
JC (December 18, 2005 02:17 PM)
For a while it was loking like we were headed for another "losing the lead in the fourth qtr" game. Let's hope those days are over.
Admittedly, the remaining games are tough...but we got ourselves in this position, and only we can scratch, bite, claw, shove, crawl, and win our way out of it.
The turf didn't allow any cutback running by either JAMES or TOMLINSON. I think Marty didn't want to risk injury and knew he'd get better performance from his smash-mouth runner/blockers.
GO SUPER-CHARGERS
DJ (December 18, 2005 02:21 PM)
I hate to say it but that was almost as good as making the playoffs. We may well have beaten both Super Bowl teams this year?
Brian (December 18, 2005 02:27 PM)
Get rid of Drayton Florence. He's so bad. His interception shouldn't even count because of his stupid fumble. Why does he play so off the receivers? He's so bad he'll get burned deep and short.
Peyton Manning (December 18, 2005 02:32 PM)

Rich from Chargers Confidential here...great game plan and defensive performance, well done to attack a speedy defense by playing straight ahead and a renewal of hope in San Diego. I think the attitude of the Bolts about the flu last week was that they don't want to be seen as making excuses, but it had to be a factor.
Rich Campbell (December 18, 2005 02:47 PM)
This win was so big for me, living in Indy. Colts this, Colts that. That is all I hear but I knew that our boys would rip them a new one. Rock On Chargers!!!!!!!!

Great Win Chargers! It was looking like we were going let one slip through our fingers as the momemtum in the 3rd quarter shifted to the Colts. Seeing the Chargers defense step up in the fourth and Turner's 83-yard run made it clear that it was going to be nothing but a day of great celebration. Hopefully, this win will kick up our game and we take it all the way to the playoffs.
Dennis Brinkley (December 18, 2005 03:01 PM)
To me it seems are team plays much better on the road then they play at home. But never the less we did it.Way to go chargers, I knew we were gonna pull it off.I woke up feeling the fire. The chargers D.fense never let up.We were CHARGED.
Ric (December 18, 2005 03:23 PM)
First things first. What a game man what a game.
But I knew we would beat the Colts simply because we went into Indy last year and almost pulled it out and this years Chargers are alot better then last years Chargers.
I've said it before and i'll say it again...Merriman was a STEAL at 12.
But the point of the post is this.
I see alot of talk about us and a wildcard but im still looking for a division title.
Oakland is a division rival with nothing to lose.
Sucks they go to Denver but the fact remains...nothing to lose and Denver is overrated in my book. So if they drop that one and we beat KC...A showdown for the division in San Diego.
So before we count our wildcard chances please let Denver lock up the division.
Go Chargers!
Chris McDaniel (December 18, 2005 03:26 PM)
I knew that they could take them, and I knew they would, because the defense is getting much better every game, and they havnt played the best run stoping defense untill today! they will have to play like that next week, but we can take the chiefs and the broncos!!!!
GO CHARGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
SHAWN (December 18, 2005 03:28 PM)

Thanks Chargers

Is it just me or the 2 commentators just hate the Chargers? I can't stand Dan Dierdorf. He's so damn transparent. I had to mute my TV just to not listen to that bafoon.
That was a crappin good game and really exposed the Colts... give the defense the game ball because they genuinely beat the Colt's high-power offense through and through. It was not a off-game for the colts -- their collective asses got beat, period.
Go Chargers!!!!!
QP (December 18, 2005 03:48 PM)
I agree with Leon above--I'm really ticked about hearing about how lousy the Colts played--the defense kicked Indy's butt today and if it wasn't for the offense's shaky 3rd quarter we'd have won it handily. We outplayed the Colts in every facet of the game, and survived some potentially lethal turnovers to win. The "O" bounced back when they needed to--how about that third and long play from Brees to McCardell? They had both made stupid plays in the 3rd and redeemed themselves.
Unfortunately, we have to rely on other people losing to bad teams--but my goodness, Jacksonville is awful. When you think of some of those earlier losses--strike that, ALL of those earlier losses--you just cringe and wonder "what if?" What if we just win ONE of those 4th quarter collapses? As bad as that Miami game was, I can't get that blocked FG in Philly out of my head. Haunting.
But on the other hand, Turner's run will be a great memory for years to come. We may not make it this year, but if we don't, we are so close to being a Super Bowl team... there's just no margin for error, and we're a young team making errors at costly times. In the AFC, you just can't play like that and survive.
But one thing at a time. Any true Charger fan knows that playing in Arrowhead is a war regardless. And every season we've been worth a damn we've won there (not many). So let's bring that defense to the Chiefs and shut those fans the hell up.
Prophet J (December 18, 2005 04:03 PM)
And one more thing--I'm with the guy above that's rooting for the Raiders next weekend (God forgive me)--we could be playing for the DIVISION on the last Sunday at home if the Broncos choke. It happened last year. And with Plummer, you never know.
I'd love to see Shanahan's little rodent-like face on the screen losing to the Raiders at home and realizing in the biting cold that he is coming to SD with the division on the line... with Merriman and Foley pinning their ears back like they did today...
Prophet J (December 18, 2005 04:08 PM)
Since I first saw this game on the schedule, I knew it would be "payback time"!....
I know it's looking a bit forward, but does everybody know that we actually still have a chance of winning our DIVISION? Look it up! It's not over! But I'll take a Wild Card anyday.
Texans, play next week for winning, not for R. Bush! Go Browns!
AND SHOW ME YOUR LIGHTNING BOLT!!!
Ben Chavez (December 18, 2005 04:10 PM)
Like I said, we matched up with them pound for pound! But you know that the we will never get the respect for this win. Until we get to the big dance...Now all we have to do is take care of business in the division. Denver looked like they won't go the distance in the playoffs and KC is limping. If we play like we played today, I have the "vision" San Diego Chargers vs Seatle Seahawks!
Ken (December 18, 2005 04:10 PM)
TURNER BURNER!!!!!!!! NUFF Said>

GO BOLTS!!!
I'm living in Chicago but my HEART is in San Diego!!Been suffering Bears and Packers poop for 2 years. Now I along with the Chargers will get some RESPECT!!
Frank (December 18, 2005 04:38 PM)
I had a feeling the CHARGERS were going to pull this out!Eventhough there was skepticism, my gut feeling said: "we can take them!" Thanks to "the Burner" Turner, we broke up Indy's chance at a record that will probably never be broken!
I also wanted to say to those "non-knowing" ESPN analyst..."what do you think now of those CHARGERS?" All morning it was San Diego's secondary can't do this, that...Well, they forgot about our front seven didn't they? Irvin, Jackson know nothing..but Chris Berman loves the Chargers. So the Bolts now head to KC where the Chiefs, who have a 2 game losing streak, will come to play. if Brees doesn't turn the ball over we will win there again! Just look for GATES cause he loves to play in KC.
Go CHARGERS, and GOD forgive me..GO RAIDERS, BROWNS, and HOUSTON...The west can still be won. I'll be there Dec. 31st and all we want is a chance at the division. That would be awesome. GO CHARGERS!!!

Lights Out on Perfection/Turn[er]ing the Lights Out on the Colts
It was John Canepa, the state of Indiana, ESPN (except Merril Hoge and Chris Berman who gave the Chargers a shot to win), CBS, FOX and the Colts VERSUS the '72 Dolphins, the loyal fans of the Chargers who didnt give up on them and the Chargers themselves on Sunday. The Chargers straight out hammered Peyton Manning like the brother he is to the Eli. Archie even felt Shawne Merriman breathing down is neck. Kudos to Thumper aka Mike Turner, the defense, especially Big Jamal, Lights Out and Q Jammer; best game he has played as a Charger.
Eric (December 18, 2005 05:13 PM)
What is up with Brees? That's 14 points Indy scored because of his mistakes. If Brees doesn't turn the ball over, the Chargers can beat KC and Denver. Guess we just have to hope that everyone else loses.
If not this year though, then next year. All our games were so close. If we can improve the secondary, then next year we might be the team scaring the hell out of the '72 Dolphins
Chris (December 18, 2005 05:19 PM)
HEY MANNING SHAWN MERIMAN SIGNED YOUR MELON LIGHTS OUT!!!!
THOMAS (December 18, 2005 05:25 PM)
I only counted Five charger mistakes in their victory over the colts. Brees, made three the two INT's and fumble. I questioned the call on 2 down and 5 yds with 6 minutes remaing in the game with a 2pt lead. Ball control don't give Manning the chance to beat you. All in All the Chargers did what I expected them to do dominate them with Defense. The Chargers have a great offense 29 pts per game avg is excellent. It's just they seem to stab themselves in both feet today before Turner took the game in hand. Without the mistakes made today the Charger win 34-3. Whats up with the Referee at the RCA dome. That second holding call against the charger center was bogus. The drive that setup the colts first 3pts in the 3rd quarter. It was obvious holding on the guard that gave Payton the long pass. I expect the Chargers to destroy the Chiefs in Kansas City next Sunday with Defense alone.
Brees needs to work on his short dump off pass, when he got nothing up field. Or throw the ball away and not take the sack and fumble. Chargers 31 Chiefs 13. The Final Game at home with Denver. I expect the Chargers to Kick some Asses. Denver is playing poorly on offensive the last three games. The Chargers will have the game put away in the 3rd quarter after Jake the Snake throws up his 3 INT. Chargers 34- Denver 7
Still the Chargers need help to make it in the playoff's, If the Raiders come up with victory in Denver which is possible, the way the Broncos have been playing on offense. Would give the Chargers the AFC West Division. If not then the Browns have to win at home next week against the Steelers for any shot to make the playoffs. Lions won't even come close in Pittsburg. I don't expect the Jaguars to lose their final two. Finally, It's been a great year. Hopefully, the Chargers being the best team in the AFC will go on to win their First Super Bowl.
Cary (December 18, 2005 06:15 PM)
What a game! I could hardly watch. Then the thunderstorm knocked out my TV. I guess that was an omen. Charged by lightning.
If Drew can just hold on to the ball, we win everthing. This is the best team and the worst team all at he same time.
Time to do KC and let it ride all the way to Denver at home. To hell with the wildcard. Win the division, baby!
GO BOLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
