Marty and the Jets?

Elton John: Bennie And The JetsThe overused “Vinnie and the Jets” catchphrase just got a new twist. The play on Elton John’s song Bennie and the Jets found a new suitor and ESPN has the inside track.

ESPN's John Clayton writes this Marty and the Jets? A.J. won't say blog entry where he questions A.J Smith on the Jets considering Marty Schottenheimer for the soon-to-be vacant Jets head coaching job.

With the team’s offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and defensive coordinator Wade Philips all being pursued for head coaching jobs why not throw the head coach in the mix as well. It makes for great off season fodder for the fans to talk about. Just don’t forget it’s a ESPN rumor that is based on two guys that are "close" friends.

Marty and the Jets? A.J. won't say - ESPN Insider
ESPN's Chris Mortensen made the thought off the top of his head Friday that Jets general manager Terry Bradway might have thoughts of considering his close friend, Marty Schottenheimer, for the soon-to-be vacant Jets head coaching job, and it did draw a response in San Diego.

"We don't discuss our football business," Chargers GM A.J. Smith said when asked directly about thoughts of the Jets coming after Schottenheimer. Pressed further, Smith reiterated that, "We don't discuss our football business."

Owner Dean Spanos made it clear after the regular season that Schottenheimer is the Chargers coach next season. But would the Chargers consider letting Schottenheimer go to the Jets?

"We don't discuss our football business," Smith said.

I hear Marty Schottenheimer is friends with Bill Hoehn of Carlsbad Mercedes. You know those high quality local TV commercials Hoehn has made over the years. What could this mean? Marty’s getting a cameo in one of Hoehn’s commercials... You get my point?

Look the rumor is getting legs courtesy of the NY Daily News. What a shame Gary Myers doesn’t even give credit to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen for starting the rumor.

I find it fascinating, however, that in ESPN’s desire to inform the sports world on breaking sports news they create stories to get all of us fans to start actually thinking this is a news story when in reality it’s just an ESPN created rumor. ESPN has so much influence on sports news, if a ESPN columnist says something itself becomes a story.

UPDATE: Dave Hutchinson, of the Star-Ledger, reports a New York Jets team official said Sunday, Jan. 8, the club has no interest in Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer.

I don't see any better coaches available. If Bill Belichick was available I would say let Marty go to the Jets, but Marty is the BEST coach for us the rest are slaps

Fox news is reporting that Marty was almost fired this week by A.J. , I think Marty has done a good job. I'd give him one more year, and not only to make the playoffs but to either get to the Superbowl or get very deep in the playoffs.

I recently heard this morning that Marty Schottenheimer almost lost his job this morning...i mean if he's leaving? Who would replace him? I say Marty stays!

Marty has made more conservative calls than some would like, but who else is available out there that is so much better.?? who?

I've heard it all year. Marty stinks. Marty should be done. Marty is the reason for the four initial "shouldn't have been" losses. I have two points. One. It's not looking good that we'll retain both Cameron or Phillips. At the very least let's keep the head coach so that the "We'll get them next year talk" will have some substance. 3 totally new coaches is not a formula conducive to victories. It is a formula conducive to yet another "We'll get them next year." Furthermore, there is value in team mates and coaches being around each other for a while. A brand new star is not as valuable as a receiver on a five year stint with the same team. One has to get used to the offense, no matter the talent. The latter knows the offense and only gets better. Case in point. Randy Moss v. Eric Parker. Moss might be the better talent, but he needs time to get used to the offense before he excels. Parker knows the offense and may go from there and build and only get better. Keep Marty, especially if Wade and Cam are gone; otherwise I smell another year rife with, "Wait till next years" and as a San Diego fan, I've heard enoiugh of those.

If rumor turns to fact, let him go. We can use the pick for the secondary or O-line. This team would have been 12-4 at the very least had the coach been less conservative. I wonder how Mooch or Sherman would do with all the talent on this roster

Jimmy Johnson with Norv Turner and T.O. to the Chargers would work ... Mr. Spanos go a head and contact Jimmy Johnson's agent and ask him what his price would be? I would like to see Marty given one more year though, but if he can't he can't.

You'll hear many rumours in the offseason. Just like the rumour that Edwards was going to go to Kansas City, and that hasn't happened...oh... wait... nevermind...If there are issues with Marty and AJ, they might as well let him go now to avoid a problem during the season. My guess is that he has Wade Phillips just waiting in the wings and he probably doesn't want to lose him. If Marty did leave, Wade would be HC.

The only coach I can really root forif Marty gets fired is Jimmy Johnson, get Norv turner back in here as an offensive coordinator, a Pro Bowl Safety, descent Offensive line help, and pile up in the draft, believe me guys we're just a few players away from winning two Superbowls, next year will be the first! go Bolts!

I agree that letting Marty go now would be disruptive for next season, unless Wade Phillips became HC, but looks like he is off to Green Bay. I wouldn't mind seeing Norv Turner back here as Offensive Coordinator. The key to progress is keeping the team as a team, and growing as a team... including the coaches. Marty has been more "aggressive" in some of the play calling then ever... not always at the right time though.

A.J smith Marty has a two year deal with the chargers tell 2007. So let him finish his deal. After that i don't care if they resign him. Lets see what he does for 2006 season. We will probably be in the the super bowl and maybe win. so You never know what could happen. I say keep him for one more year.

First off, Antonio (unanimous!)and Jamal get major kudos for All-Pro staus! I'm happy for Jamal in that he's FINALLY geting recognized for the great job he's done over the years. High fives to Rookie Defender of the Year, Merriman! Now about #59 ... that still seems to be another story all its own, doesn't it?
Okay, now the rest of the diatribe ... Isn't it oddly convenient that the Chiefs hire the man who seems to get the best of Marty every time they match up? The only reason the Jets (sad as they were this year) almost beat the Bolts again this year. If it weren't for a *rare* pass defensed by Jammer, they'd have lost to the Paper Airplanes. The Jets and the Steelers are the two teams the Chargers just can't quite get behind them. Is it any more odd that Cowher and Edwards are former Marty disciples? So what? What do I do with that steaming pile of useless knowledge? Well, here's your answer. Yes, Marty's a good coach. Yes, he's the (yawn) winningest active coach. However, his postseason record SUX. What is it? 5-12? Yikes! (Have you seen those playoff losses? About as ugly as they get! They're so horrible, NFL film could make a special called "Marty's Most Horrible/Gut-Wrenching Playoff Losses" and still have enough slapstick footage for a Part Deux!)The flip side of being around long enough to wear that "winningest" hat is that other coaches have a "scouting report" on your play-calling habits.
So, all in all, if the Jets want him, let him go. We don't need the Chiefs winning games just because their coach knows all the tricks in Marty's bag.

The other way of looking at this situation is this: the Chargers have been a mostly crappy team for most of the 26 years I've been a fan. Marty's at least bringing an average of 10-6 to the team and it's a nice change from the 1-15s, 2-14s, etc. we'd gotten too used to. So, if as fans, we're comfortable with simply having a decent record every year, then Marty's our man. If we truly desire to have the Bolts hoist a Tiffany-designed NFL Championship trophy, then he isn't.

I say let him go if he wants to. We're getting no where any way, and there are otehr choices out there that we could get. just any one but Mike Sherman, because I live with a house of Packer fans, I know that he is a terrible coach, maybe Mariuchi, but, who knows?

What? Let Marty Go! He is a great coach. He has allowed the offense to run up the points. If the O-Line improves and the defense has key players installed, the Chargers will win the SB. Marty is not the greatest, but starting over will kill the direction AJ is directing the team. Marty knows football and the peices are falling into place for a great run. Could we get Jimmy? Probably not. Why take the chance for a 4th round pick from the Jets. I say keep him until 2007.

I feel I need to buttress my stance on what I said previously. Again, in Pittsburgh, there is a coach who has achieved demi-god status. The aforementioned Cowher is doing a rather identical job as Marty. Solid winning record in the regular season, but come playoff time, well ... it's like a masked man comes out and patrols the sideline. Just watch what happens yet again to the Steelers and we'll be afforded a peek into the Chargers' future with Marty at the helm.
The "football gods" always punish coaches who take their foot off the accelerator come playoff time.

I totally agree with the prior comment that the Chief's got Edwards because besides being a good coach, he's got Marty's number. Which brings me to my next point...when are they going to balance out the divisions. The AFC West is the toughest division in football which is just fine with Tagliabu and the east coast media because it allows us to beat up on each other and allow their beloved east coast teams into the playoffs. GET KC OUT OF THE AFC WEST. Put in a west coast team. That's why they call it the AFC WEST. Hint: the Niner's. And I don't care about history or tradition. That went out the window with all the team additions and changes of the 90's. Everybody, get loud about this and don't let up. Make it happen.

Look at this.... anESPN created story turns out to be false. Whats new! It's amazing how this story started when a guy said something off the top of his head.
