Smith: Rivers is not going to be traded

Quarterback Drew Brees made headlines when he stated the team“want(s) to pursue me long term,” referring to his contract, in a conference call with media on Wednesday.

It has made some fans believe that quarterback Philip Rivers will be traded. Not so fast, Chargers.com Casey Pearce reports that regardless of what happens with Brees’ contract, General Manager A.J. Smith said that the team has no plans to part with Philip Rivers.

“Philip is not going to be traded,” Smith said. “He is a Charger and will remain one.”

Should the two sides be unable to reach an agreement on Brees' contract, the team will then explore their options. The Chargers still have the ability to place either the franchise or transition tag on Brees.

Rivers still has four years left on his contract and the team is in good position to carry both Brees and Rivers again next season.

Good. Rivers is a good player. I'm not as excited about him as I was when he was drafted, but I'm just as glad to have him on our roster. Drew should remain starter as long as he desevres... and he deserves it right now. Until then Philip can sit on the bench and fufil a less glorious but equally important duty.

we should keep Rivers, we need to make sure that Drew is 100% before he is put back in the line of fire...., Chad Pennington could'nt wait to get back on the field and look where he is...., so lets just keep both as long as we can..!!!

I'm glad to hear this. I like the fact of keeping Rivers here. I still think that Drew is our QB and he's truly proven this. Rivers is a solid back-up... for now. I say we get rid of Feely to free up some cap room and pick-up another QB through the draft at a lower round that will definitely be cheaper.

Rivers is a franchise QB he should be given the chance to be the starter next seaason. Everyone is so in love with Drew Breese, my thought is Breese has the advantage of the best TE RB combo in the NFL and has not taken it to the next level, even cost us some games this year with his play. I feel maybe his pro-bowl selections has a lot to do with the play of the TE and RB meaning they make him look better then he really is. Just think if Brady had these two players. How about we keep both our QB's and move Breese to the number 2 If Rivers can win the job?

i agree with some of the other fans...., get rid of Feely and pick up a QB in the mid-late rounds...., that way when the time does come for Rivers to be traded we will have a well molded back-up for Drew...!!!

I say give Rivers his chance to start, sooner rather than later. He's got a long enough contract remaining but there's no point in just sitting around on it. Or at least turn up the heat in competition for a starting role. The rehab for Brees should be enough to trigger that for Rivers so maybe we'll see some action around training camp time?

i think they are still going to trade him. why get A.J feely? I like Brees And Rivers I want to see them both play for the Chargers but man Its All Drew Hes the Man.

but a trade is coming.

i do agree with some of the other fans....., i would love to see a very competitive run at the starting QB position...., i think it will help both Drew and Philip...., as for a trade i just don't see it this year especialy since Drew's injury...., the team is on the thresh hold of a championship team and with next years opponents both home and on the road we really do have a good chance at a strong playoff run...., and having both Drew and Philip on the sideline no matter which order they are in is our best bet to go deep in the post-season..., i still think we should release Feely and draft a QB in the mid to late rounds that way when a trade is made we still will have a desent back-up for whoever remains....!!!! GOOOO!!!! BOLTS....!!!! 2006....!!!

Do you people know how hard it is to get a good QB? Drew is not just riding the shoulders of Gates and LT. Drew is a winner and a leader and a top 5 QB. I like Phollip as a backup, but Drew leads this team, and if you don't see that, you're not watching.

Philip again why will we keep having 2 starting quaterbacks we should trade philip rivers for someone good and keep drew brees for a very long deal. philip does not even play that often why keep him??

The statement could be "at this point, Rivers is not going to be traded". If someone made an offer of a player or pick(s) that the Chargers could really use, I'm sure he'd look at it. And why not? Rivers may be good when given the chance, but you never really know until he's out there starting. And with Brees here, there's no reason Rivers should be starting. It would be fine to have a solid veteran here to back up Brees instead of a young first round pick, especially if you get a first round pick or player for a position that you really need help with.

Why would you want to draft a QB AND keep Rivers? Then you would have two untested (in NFL terms) and unproven QBs backing up your starter. I'd rather see them keep a veteran like Feeley to backup Brees. If Rivers thinks he should be starting and you can get significant value in return, why not do what you can to improve your team? Of course, it all depends on what happens with Drew in terms of his contract. I think the injury is a non-issue.

I would love to see Rivers traded to a team where he will get a shot. Unless Brees is really hurt; however everything I have read he is expected to be ready for camp, let Philip leave. Heck Marty wouldn't even give Rivers a chance in a meaningless game at the end of the year till Brees was hurt. I don't see it changing next year, Brees got three years and a lot of playing time to develope into a good quarterback, Rivers will never excel if he can't get on the field.

Drew is awesome, Phiilip is okay.....Drew came from Purdue and i lve purdue, but phillip has not tht much PT. Drew needs to b 100% for us to go all the way! go bolts!

Rivers needs to be traded, because i'm sure he wants a chance to show his talent. Also the fact that we could use an extra pick or pick up a solid player to place in our secondary(weak). Give Brees the full confidence, and end the discussion of both QB's in SD.
