Charlie Whitehurst Q&A

Charlie is a tall, yet mobile passer with good bloodlines. He hopes to follow his father, David, to the National Football League, where David was a quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. The following is a Q&A quarterback Charlie Whitehurst:

Are you surprised to be a Charger?
“I definitely was surprised. I knew they were interested in a quarterback. I wasn’t sure how early they were going to take one. It definitely wasn’t one of the teams I thought it would be, but I couldn’t be more happy. Definitely surprised. I’m just glad it’s over.”

What do you think about your situation here?
“Obviously Philip (Rivers) is the starter. I’m not sure where it goes after that. It’s going to take time, for sure. I have to learn the system. I just want to help the team. I don’t know where exactly I’m going to be on the depth chart. That’s not my concern right now. I just want to get there, get to work and help the team win ... whatever role that might be.”

On playing against Philip Rivers in college:
“Oh, yes. I thought I was done seeing that guy, but obviously not. It’s just going to be fun to go out there and be around him again and hope to win some football games.”

Did your dad play with James Lofton?
“Yes, he did. He was a quarterback there when James was playing receiver.”

Do you know Lofton?
“I met James twice. I saw him at the Senior Bowl. That was the last time I saw him. I definitely heard a lot about him.”

Who’s your agent?
“Pat Dye, Jr.”

Tell Phillip Rivers this dude can play, and although you guys might think Rivers got the starting position just wait till this rookie gets on the practice field.

If things don't work out with Philp I think Charlie could be the future QB. I believe he has that kind of talent. I believe that keeping Philp and letting Drew go was a great decision. I think Philps' talent much better than Drews'. Yes Drew was a proven playoff all pro QB. But I still think Philp is better and with Drew hurting his throwing arm was not good. Drew did not have the strongest arm to begin with. I'm not saying Charlie is better than Philp I just think that he will be a good to great starter in the future. Time will only tell.

I live in SC and I'm a life long Clemson fan. I think you all will be pleased with the pick up of Whitehurst. If your going to say anything about this kid, it would have to be his toughness! He has to be the toughest QB I've seen play. Also remember he broke almost every record at Clemson while playing behind a suspect O-line. Good luck Charlie!

Good player, good pickup. I don't care what NIx says about Feeley: this guy will be our second-stringer.

Charlie will be a perfect NFL backup. We are fortunate to have him in case rivers goes down. charlie is a big, tough qb that put up good #'s in big games

what an arm. watch out nfl. Charlie is in the house!

Way to go Chairlie! We will miss you @ Clemson. Best of luck w/ the Chargers!

I have seen Charlie play
many times on television
and in person. What I
remember most is not his
talent or his skills but that
he is the definition of
a team player. He will
be a great player for the
Chargers in due time.

I am a die hard clemson fan so I have sceen charlie play scince he started at clemson he is one of the best QB's I have ever sceen. he has a really strong arm,and he is very smart. charlie is good under presure and has set over 40 clemson records including all-time leader in total offence. I think he will do even better in the NFL.

Everyone always says great things about the QB of their team. And living 10 miles from Clemson I've seen Charlie alot, and am biased.Alot of people poke charlie for his INTs etc.But remember that he played and learned three totally different offensive systems at Clemson.I've seen this guy play alot of games, and trust me he was'nt just a name to fill a draft position. My prediction is that Charlie will be dead on Rivers' heels by the time we see preseason. And if PR slips up or gets hurt he may never see his starting position again. Thanks,MikeChappell aka"The newest Chargers fan.

I'm a huge Clemson fan and have watched Charlie play every year he's been at Clemson. You'll be surprised how much better Charlie will be than Philip Rivers when he takes the field. He's a great quarterback with pro potential. I think he'll do great.

I think taking Charlie Whitehurst was a good idea. He is definatley a good QB. Though Phillip Rivers is the starter this guy is definatley an option if any thing happens to rivers. Charlie can play football and i hope to see him on the field a couple years from now.
