Tackle and kicker selected in the sixth

Jeromey Clary
The Bolts select two player in the six round, Kansas State Offensive Tackle Jeromey Clary and Virginia kicker Kurt Smith.

“Clary is a tall offensive tackle who actually looks thin for a 300 pounder and can be pushed around at the point of attack -- aggressive pass rushers consistently get into his chest, jolt him and drive him backwards into the quarterback's lap. He has the foot quickness that is tough to find in a 6-foot-6 offensive tackle, but he needs to learn to play under control and keep his feet underneath himself more consistently (he bends at the waist and overextends too often). Once he makes contact with the pass rusher, he has a tendency to stop his feet and gets beaten by quick, secondary pass-rush moves. The trouble is that he is not aggressive with his hands, which gives the defensive end the control. He is not an aggressive blocker and tends to be more of a positional, seal-run blocker who cannot get movement, and once he makes contact on run blocks, he has a tendency to stop his feet, lean and overextend too often. As concerning as his physical limitations are, it's really a concern that he does not read and react well to defensive line stunts/loops and delayed blitzes. Overall, Clary's size, long arms and quick feet are good enough to play offensive tackle in the NFL, but he needs to become more aggressive and stay over his feet more consistently in order to play up to his ability. If he learns to use hands more aggressively and plays more aggressively, he can be a solid backup/No. 3 offensive tackle for an NFL team. More...

Nate, I love ya, but you dont get the touch backs. Hopefully Smith helps us there.

I expected AJ to draft 2 tackles, and it happened. I dont think Shane's job is in jeopardy, but depth is needed.

Clary sounds more like a guy you invite as a free agent and MAYBE sign to the practice squad, and then to take a kicker? Is kaeding not healthy?

a freeking kicker? Im usually not one to comment on these things but come on. there is no explanation for this. This draft has been awful so far. there are so many other needs cb , wr, ilb, and, they give us a kicker. Im finished with this draft. Im going to sleep.

A kicker??? If Smith can kick it deeper than Kaeding are they looking to platoon?

A kicker? I just don't get it.

Why a kicker? Does Kurt Smith have an extraordinarily strong leg, making him our kickoff specialist?

Why did we pick a kicker? Is something wrong with Kaseding?

Not bad here, Offensive line depth, and a kicker that can get some touchbacks.

Worst draft I can ever remember by the Chargers . . . . 'course I'm only 54 years old.

Taking a kicker in the 6th is an absolute joke. Kurt Smith was so unsuccessful at UVA that he lost his job after his freshman year and was relegated to solely kickoffs. That said, he isnt even that great at kicking off and could have been brought in as a free agent today, tommorow or in a month because no other team was going to waste their time, money or draft pick with him. Kaeding (a high draft pick just two years ago) struggles from time to time with kicking off but remember he was hurt during the beginning of last season and if it was AJ's intention to bring in somebody to kickoff why not bring in any number of people who could compete for place kicking as well. In sum - wasted draft pick.

Why a kicker? AJ lied. He said they would not touch 3 positions and two of those were kicking and punting? why did they change? there are so many more needs. No wide outs were taken. why not? Very disappointed #1 Fan.....

I loved his draft last year but this year it honestly seems like Smith has lost his mind. Very disappointed.

Get a grip people. It was a sixth round pick. And we had two. Most sixth round picks don't even make the team when it is all said and done.

Why a kicker? Maybe because the other team started pretty much every drive on the 40. Name another rookie drafted in the sixth round who could impact field possession by 20 yards 4 or 5 times a game. It's like having another 100 yard rusher. I'll take that gamble.

Jeromey Clary Sounds Like A Very Good Prospect. Kurt Smith Could Find Himself on The 53 man Roster . The Ability To Keep Kickoff Return yardage to a Min. and Touchbacks would be Great ! if Kurt Shows He can Do it with Consistancy he will Be a Charger in 2006 Season
