Training camp objective remains the same

Camp Schottenheimer.jpgChargers Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer will lead an NFL training camp for the 20th time this summer. Comparing his camp philosophy today versus his first with the Cleveland Browns in 1985, he says, “The ultimate objective remains the same and that is to get your team ready to start the season in a positive way. The means by which that is achieved is different since the advent of offseason programs and conditioning."

“These days, your football team should be in very good condition when you get to camp. It’s really changed in that regard. When I was playing (1965-70), we had eight weeks of training camp. We were in pads twice a day for the first two weeks of practice. In those days, we played more preseason games. Things were considerably different.”

these guys are professionals. they know how to prepare.

especially considering what the expectations are for the Chargers this year, i'm stoked that the players are working hard already.

Marty's not the type of coach that will allow a young guy to win a starting job out of training camp, so it shouldn't be that exciting. The only pos battles the chargers have is at the saftiey pos. (the same pos the chargers will draft in the first round of next years draft if all goes as planned at the other pos)McCree is going to be the starting free saftey cause thats why we got him so that leaves SS. Kiel who was beat up last year is the saftey version of Jammer(without the gun show) in that he has gifts, but lacks the cover skills to make big plays in coverage. Jue is solid but nothing special and Hart found himself at the right place at the right times enough last year to consider him a contender for the job. All in all, I hope landry (Auburn saftey) slips enough in the draft for the chargers to fully revamp their secondary.

Other things to check on in training camp are. 1) If Philp does well after failure. We know he can chuck it but how does he act when the chips are down.
2)Is Sproles cleanly catching punts? Great agility but all for nothing if Marty can't trust him.
3)The big wideouts. V Jack and Woods. The potintial is limitless but injuries have slowed their progression.
4)The Vets. k Mac, Godfrey, neal, Jamal, Oben, Goff, Donnie... Whose lost a step, whose hasn't aged and who needs to be replaced.
5)The rookies. Cromartie has the scary potintial to cut the field in half. And @ 6'2" and 4.38 speed (with a knee that wasn't 100%) who can't he COVER(I cap lock 4 jammer). McNeill and Charlie were also outstanding college players and I've read good things about dobbins but any pick or ufa could be the next Olivea or polk or cooper.
6) The freaks. L.T, gates and Shawne. Are they in shape, healthy, and happy? If so I would say we have nothing to worry about but then I quickly remember how many NFl games our quarterback has started.

I am Glad to See all The Great Hard Conditioning that the Majority of Players Have Done ! and that The Tempo was Good at Mini Camp. I Like the sense of Urgancy the Vetrans have shown . I think Philip Rivers is Going To Step it up and will Put the skeptics to rest . I also think the rest of the Team will Rally around Rivers ! He has Earnd the Respect of His Teamates as a Leader . As a 4 Year Starter Takeing His Team To 4 Bowl Games and Being Named MVP in all of them ! Speeks of his Talent and Natural Leadership ablilities ! Please Do Forget this is His 3rd Year. ps Mr. Rivers has Handled Him Self as a Pro the whole Time ! Go Go Go CHARGERS
