We have a winner

With nine wins this season as a starter, Philip Rivers is assured of his seventh-straight winning season as a starting quarterback, dating back to his junior season at Athens High School. Since becoming a starting QB in 1998, Rivers has never had a losing record, going 11-2 (1998) and 10-3 (1999) at Athens and then going 8-4 (2000), 7-5 (2001), 11-3 (2002) and 8-5 (2003) at North Carolina State. Rivers’ record for the Wolfpack included an impressive 3-1 mark in postseason bowl games.

Junior Say-ouch!

Former Chargers great Junior Seau breaks arm and it bends in places it shouldn’t. It's the most painful thing to watch.

This is a little late but very disturbing video of former Chargers great Junior Seau. Not for the faint at heart, you’ve been warned. Pictures.

LT continues as TD machine

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson leads the NFL this year with 24 total touchdowns. Tomlinson’s total ties for the fifth most in a season. The six-year veteran from TCU needs five touchdowns through the Chargers’ final five games to pass Seattle running back Shaun Alexander’s NFL record of 28 set last season. Through 11 games, Tomlinson is ahead of Alexander’s 2005 pace.

Following are the players with the most touchdowns in a single season and each player’s total through the first 12 games of that year:

*Through 11 games

Tomlinson’s 24 touchdowns in San Diego’s first 11 games would be the highest total by a player in the first 12 games of a season. The Chargers running back can add to his mark this Sunday when San Diego travels to Buffalo.

Following are the players with the most touchdowns through the first 12 games of a season:

Tomlinson has an NFL-best 21 rushing touchdowns, more than every other team in the league. He can become the fifth player in history with more rushing touchdowns than every other team in the league.

The teams will be announced at 4 p.m. (ET) Tuesday, Dec. 19 on a special NFL Total Access 2007 Pro Bowl Selection Show on NFL Network. The Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday, February 10 and televised by CBS.

Bills will try to slow LT

’Cause it’s nearly impossible to stop LaDaunian Tomlinson completely. The Chargers running back is on pace to break the NFL season TD record of 28. He has 24 with five games to go. Twenty-one of those scores have come in the Chargers’ last seven games. And he has a career-best five 100-yard rush games in a row.

Whatever game plan Buffalo defensive coordinator Perry Fewell develops, it’s up to the players, says Bills deffensive tackle Larry Tripplett, to follow it closely. “It’s us having faith in the scheme and being where we’re supposed to be,” Tripplett says. “The scheme is going to make plays for us.”

Aside from the “LT” show, the spotlight also will be on the first meeting of two 2004 first-round quarterbacks who rank in the top 10 in NFL completion percentage. San Diego’s Philip Rivers has completed 65.0 percent of his passes (ranked fourth) and Buffalo’s J.P. Losman (No. 22 in ’04) has connected on 63.8 percent (ranked eighth).

The Bills who played the Chargers twice a year in the early days of the AFL will wear their ’60s uniforms.

LT threw another TD

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson 19 yd TD pass to tight end Antonio Gates

(Courtesy Chargers Broadcast)

Postgame Notes

LaDainian Tomlinson came up big once again Sunday, keying another second-half rally to give the AFC West-leading Chargers (9-2) a 21-14 victory over the rival Oakland Raiders. It was San Diego's fifth straight win. "It seems like it's magical, the way things are happening for us," said Tomlinson. "It's kind of just going right for us." Tomlinson rushed for two touchdowns to give him a league-leading 24 for the season and he threw for another, a 19-yarder to tight end Antonio Gates to tie the game at 14 in the fourth quarter. It came four plays after a celebratory spike by Vincent Jackson following a fourth-down catch set off 10 minutes of confusion. San Diego sealed the win with Drayton Florence's interception deep in Chargers territory with 1:48 left.

Postgame Notes from today's Chargers-Raiders game at Qualcomm Stadium

  • Marty Schottenheimer led the Chargers to an undefeated November for the third year in a row…the Chargers have won 10 straight November games, including four this season…today’s win was the 200th of Schottenheimer’s career.
  • LaDainian Tomlinson scored the Chargers’ first touchdown today on a four-yard run…it was his 20th rushing TD of the season, setting a new team single-season record (19, Chuck Muncie, 1981).
  • Tomlinson’s first touchdown raised his season point total to 138, also setting a new team record for single-season scoring (135, John Carney, 1994).
  • When Tomlinson scored the team’s first touchdown, it was the Chargers 17th consecutive scoring drive that ended with a touchdown, tying the team’s longest streak (1981)…the Chargers haven’t kicked a field goal since their Nov. 5 game against Cleveland...the Chargers scored a total of three touchdowns today without kicking a field goal, extending the team record to 19 straight touchdowns without kicking a field goal.
  • Tomlinson’s touchdown was set up on a 91-yard kickoff return by Antonio Cromartie…it ties the seventh-longest kickoff return in team history and it was the Bolts’ longest since Ronney Jenkins had a 93-yard return against the Raiders in Oakland on Nov. 18, 2001.
  • Tomlinson scored his game-winning second rushing TD of the day on a 10-yard run…on that play, he went over 100 yards rushing for the day, marking his fifth-straight 100 yard game…it’s the longest such stretch of his career…Tomlinson has six 100-yard rushing games this season, including two versus Oakland (131 yards Week 1).
  • Tomlinson has scored 24 touchdowns this season, 21 rushing and three receiving…he’s tied with Priest Holmes (2002) and John Riggins (1983) for the fifth-most touchdowns in a season in NFL history…Shaun Alexander of Seattle set the NFL record (28) in 2005.
  • Tomlinson’s two touchdowns today raised his career total to 104…it is the 15th most in NFL history…the two scores also raised his career rushing TDs total to 93, moving him into eighth place on the league’s all-time list.
  • Tomlinson had a hand in all three touchdowns today, including a game-tying 19-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Gates in the fourth quarter…it’s his second touchdown pass of the season and the sixth of his career…it’s tied for the second-most TD passes by a non-quarterback in NFL history with Keith Byars, Greg Pruitt and Marcus Allen…Walter Payton (8) has the most.
  • Gates is the sixth different receiver to catch a touchdown pass from Tomlinson…the others include Drew Brees, Keenan McCardell, Justin Peelle, Eric Parker and Brandon Manumalenuna.
  • Randall Godfrey had a season-high three tackles for loss today…it’s tied for the most by a Chargers defender in a game this season…Shaun Phillips had three against Pittsburgh Oct. 8 in an NBC Sunday Night Football game…it’s Godfrey’s most tackles for loss in a game with the Chargers since he had three at Denver Sept. 26, 2004…he’s never had more than three tackles for loss in a game with San Diego.
  • Godfrey finished today’s game with a season-high 13 tackles (according to press box statistics)…it’s his most since a 13-tackle game against Pittsburgh on Oct. 10, 2005.
  • The Chargers’ two starting cornerbacks, Quentin Jammer and Drayton Florence had interceptions in the same game for the first time this season…the last time the duo did so, the Chargers knocked off the Indianapolis Colts, 26-17, on Dec. 18, 2005 at the RCA Dome…they are now tied for the team lead with three picks apiece this season.
  • The Chargers were only 2-of-11 today on third down, but Eric Parker was responsible for both third-down conversions, including a key four-yard catch on a third-and-three to the Oakland 12-yard line on the Chargers’ game-winning fourth-quarter drive…his other third-down conversion was a 10-yard catch on a third-and-eight play during the Bolts’ opening drive of the third quarter.
  • The Chargers had five sacks today, giving them a total of 14 in their two games this season against the Raiders…it is the most they’ve had in a season against the Raiders…the previous highs were 11 in 1986 and 10 in 1981.
  • The Chargers have now won seven-consecutive games against Oakland, their longest winning streak in the series.
  • Shaun Phillips had 1.5 sacks today, giving him a team-leading 9.5 for the season.
  • The Chargers reported the following injuries from today’s game: LS David Binn (stinger), and WRs Vincent Jackson (thumb sprain) and Eric Parker (knee).

Second-half surge gives Bolts 21-14 win

With both Tomlinson and the Chargers looking all too human against the Oakland Raiders, the star running back keyed yet another second-half rally to give the AFC West-leading Chargers a 21-14 win against over their biggest rival, their fifth straight win.

SD’s LT = TDs

The LaDainian Tomlinson touchdown watch continues. With six games to play in the season, San Diego running back Tomlinson – now with 22 TDs -- needs seven scores to set the single-season record in the category. Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander established the NFL touchdown record last year with 28.

Last Sunday night in Denver, Tomlinson scored his 100th TD in his 89th career game, topping Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown (93) and Emmitt Smith (93) for the fewest games played to reach 100. Tomlinson finished the night with 102 career touchdowns.

A look at the top five single-season touchdown totals:

L.T. AFC Offensive Players of the Week

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers, defensive end Jason Taylor of the Miami Dolphins and kick returner B.J. Sams of the Baltimore Ravens are the AFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the 11th week of the 2006 season (November 19-20), the NFL announced today.

Offense: RB LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego Chargers

• The Chargers seized the AFC West lead on the road Sunday night with a 35-27 win at Denver, bolstered by Tomlinson’s four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving), 105 rushing yards on 20 carries, and 75 yards on three receptions. In his 89th career game, Tomlinson scored his 99th, 100th, 101st, and 102nd career touchdowns, reaching 100 TDs in the fewest games played. Tomlinson surpassed the previous-best mark of 93 games, reached by Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith. Trailing 24-7 midway through the third quarter, the San Diego rusher scored on a three-yard run and a 51-yard catch and run within 84 seconds to make the score 24-21, Denver. With 3:03 left in the game, a San Diego interception gave the Chargers possession on the Denver 23-yard line with a 28-27 lead. Tomlinson rushed for the team’s next 23 yards – including a one-yard TD run – in a five-play scoring drive for the Chargers’ eight-point margin of victory. Tomlinson has 22 TDs on the season and is only six touchdows away from tying the single-season record of 28, set by Seattle’s Shaun Alexander last season.

In his sixth season from TCU, this is Tomlinson’s eighth Player of the Week Award and his fifth since the start of 2005.

Other nominees for AFC Offensive Player of Week 11 were:

• New England quarterback Tom Brady, who tied a career-high with four TD passes, completing 20 of 31 (64.5 percent) for 244 yards and a 128.2 passer rating in a 35-0 win at Green Bay.
• Houston quarterback David Carr, who completed 25 of 30 passes (83.3 percent) for 223 yards against one interception in a 24-21 loss against Buffalo. Carr tied an NFL record by completing 22 consecutive pass attempts in the game.
• Buffalo wide receiver Lee Evans, who set a club record with 265 receiving yards on a career-high 11 catches. Evans posted two 83-yard TD receptions, making him the third player in NFL history with two TD catches of 80-plus yards in one game.
• Cincinnati wide receiver Chad Johnson, who posted 190 receiving yards and career-high-tying three touchdowns on six catches in a 31-16 win at New Orleans. Johnson leads the NFL with 932 receiving yards.
• Kansas City running back Larry Johnson, who rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries (5.0-yard average) in a 17-13 win against Oakland.
• Baltimore running back Jamal Lewis, who carried the ball 22 times for 91 yards (4.1 avg.) and rushed for a career-high-tying three TDs.
• Buffalo quarterback J.P. Losman, who threw a career-high 340 passing yards, completing 26 of 38 attempts with three TDs against one interception. Losman led the team on a seven-play, 55-yard TD drive to win the game with nine seconds left in regulation.
Cincinnati quarterback CARSON PALMER, who completed 14 of 22 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns against one interception for a 127.8 passer rating.
Pittsburgh quarterback BEN ROETHLISBERGER, who led the Steelers on three fourth-quarter touchdown drives of more than 75 yards in a 24-20 win at Cleveland. Roethlisberger completed 18 of 29 fourth-quarter passes for 224 yards and two TDs.

Monday's Hot List

· Marty Schottenheimer won the 194th regular-season game of his career on Sunday night in Denver when the Chargers overcame a 17-point third-quarter deficit (24-7) and outscored the Broncos 28-3 down the stretch to win the game, 35-27…with the win, he broke a tie with Chuck Noll (193 wins) and became the league’s fifth all-time winningest coach…the Chargers, who overcame a 21-point deficit to win last Sunday in Cincinnati, became the first team in NFL history to come back from 17-point deficits in consecutive weeks to win…it was Schottenheimer’s 12th-career win against Denver.

· LaDainian Tomlinson scored four touchdowns against Denver, the 99th, 100th, 101st and 102nd of his career…he became the fastest player in NFL history to score 100 touchdowns (89 games), easily surpassing Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith, who both did so in 93 games…he is the 20th player in NFL history to score 100 touchdowns…Tomlinson has scored an NFL-record 19 touchdowns in the last six games, including back-to-back four-touchdown games...it was the third time this season that he’s scored four touchdowns in a game (an NFL record) and he’s the third player in league history to score four touchdowns in back-to-back games…Jim Taylor (1962) and Marshall Faulk (2000) are the only others.

· Tomlinson leads the NFL with 22 touchdowns, good for 132 points…he needs just one more score to break the team’s single-season scoring record of 135 points, set by kicker John Carney in 1994.

· Tomlinson’s four touchdowns against the Broncos raised his season total to 22, setting a new Chargers single-season mark…they are also the most touchdowns ever scored in the first 10 games of a season…he had set the record with 20 last season…Tomlinson scored three times on the ground at Invesco Field, raising his season rushing TD total to 19, tying the team’s single-season mark held by Chuck Muncie (1981)…Tomlinson’s three rushing touchdowns in Denver were the 89th, 90th and 91st of his career…he became the NFL’s second-fastest player to score 90 rushing touchdowns (89 games)…Emmitt Smith is the NFL’s fastest (88 games)…LT is the 13th player in NFL history with 90 rushing TDs.

· Tomlinson has 10 rushing touchdowns in the last three games alone, three against Cleveland, four at Cincinnati and three at Denver…he’s the first player in league history to score three or more rushing TDs in three straight games.

· Tomlinson rushed for 105 yards against the Broncos, his first-career 100-yard game in the Mile High City…it was his fourth game in a row with over 100 yards, marking the first such stretch in his career…he has five 100-yard rushing games this season, two shy of the team single-season record that he shares (2002) with Don Woods (1974).

· On the Chargers fourth-quarter drive in which they scored a touchdown to take the lead at 28-27, Tomlinson started the drive with a 15-yard run that put him over 1,000 yards for the season…he’s rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of his first six NFL seasons and is one of only five players to do so…the others are Barry Sanders (first 10 seasons, 1989-1998), Curtis Martin (10, 1995-2004), Eric Dickerson (7, 1983-89) and Corey Dillon (6, 1997-2002)…Tomlinson has averaged an impressive 4.9 yards per carry this season, fourth-highest among the NFL’s top 25 running backs.

· With Tomlinson going over 1,000 yards, fullback Lorenzo Neal has now been a lead blocker for 10-straight 1,000-yard rushers…Neal has played in 202 consecutive games, the longest active streak among NFL running backs.

· In addition to leading the NFL in scoring, Tomlinson leads the league in total yards from scrimmage (1,488) and he ranks third in rushing (1,037).

· Philip Rivers completed 73 percent of his passes against the Broncos, raising his completion percentage for the season to 67 percent (201 of 300), which ranks third in the league…Rivers showed a lot of resiliency against the Broncos, battling back after throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown to give Denver a 24-7 lead…on the very next series after the INT, he led a seven-play, 60-yard touchdown drive during which he completed all four of his pass attempts for 54 yards…he then completed the comeback by throwing a 51-yard touchdown pass to Tomlinson on a third-and-three play and then gave the Chargers the lead when he completed 4 of 4 for 37 yards, including a five-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Jackson on the drive after that…early in the game, the Chargers had jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a drive in which Rivers completed 5-of-5 for 59 yards.

· Rivers has thrown 15 touchdown passes and only five interceptions this season…he has a touchdown pass in nine of the team’s 10 games, including all six games on the road…in those six road games, he’s thrown 11 touchdown passes and only four interceptions.

· Jackson’s touchdown catch was his third of the season…the Chargers now have five different players with at least three TD catches: Antonio Gates (4), Jackson (3), Tomlinson (3), Malcom Floyd (3) and Brandon Manumaleuna (3)…they are the only team in the league with such a fivesome.

· Michael Turner makes “The Hot List” for his work on kickoff returns…Turner had two 40+ returns against Denver that both ignited touchdown drives…in the third quarter, his 40-yard return after Denver scored on an INT return helped start a touchdown drive that got the Chargers back to within 10 points (24-14)…then in the fourth quarter after Denver kicked a field goal to take a 27-21 lead, Turner had a 44-yard return that set up a drive that ended with the touchdown pass from Rivers to Jackson and allowed the Bolts to seize the lead, 28-27.

· Antonio Gates has been to the last two Pro Bowls because of efforts like the one he put forth on the Chargers fourth-quarter drive in which they took a 28-27 lead…Gates was responsible for 32 of the team’s 55 yards on the drive, including a key 10-yard catch to the Broncos’ seven on a third-and-three play…Gates is the team’s leading receiver with 523 yards and four touchdowns.

· Marques Harris made perhaps one of the biggest defensive plays of the night when he made a great defensive read and tackled running back Damien Nash for a six-yard loss late in the fourth quarter…trailing 28-27, it forced the Broncos to go for it three plays later on a fourth-and-four from their own 38-yard line…Jake Plummer’s fourth down pass was in turn intercepted by Drayton Florence and returned to the 23-yard line…it led to a one-yard touchdown run by Tomlinson on the following drive that gave the Bolts a 35-27 lead and essentially put the game away.

· Shaun Phillips retains his spot on the Hot List for his clinching sack on the last play of Sunday’ night’s game…after the Chargers scored to go up 35-27, the Broncos got the ball back with 1:14…aided by a couple of passes and two penalties, the Broncos moved to the Chargers’ 32-yard line with 24 seconds left, but on a first-and-five Phillips put the victory on ice when he sacked Plummer for a 14-yard loss and stripped the ball from the Denver QB…the Broncos recovered the fumble but as they scrambled to the line of scrimmage, time ran out on the clock…the sack by Phillips was his first of the night and his eighth of the season, leaving him just .5 sacks behind Shawne Merriman (8.5) for the team lead…Phillips is tied for seventh in the league in sacks, while Merriman is tied for fifth, despite missing the last three games…the Chargers are the only team in the league with two players ranked in the Top 10 in sacks.

· Taking advantage of the mile-high altitude, Nate Kaeding had a career-high three touchbacks and Mike Scifres floated all three of his punts inside the 20-yard line without allowing the Broncos a single return.

· The Chargers are on a remarkable run inside “The Gold Zone” (20-yard line)…they have scored touchdowns on their last 12 gold zone possessions, including all four on Sunday in Denver…the Bolts now lead the NFL in touchdown percentage inside the 20-yard line (.683)…the Chargers have scored an NFL-best 28 touchdowns from inside the 20…in 41 total Gold Zone possessions this season, the Chargers have 28 touchdowns, 12 field goals and one kneel down (end of Pittsburgh game).

· The Chargers lead the NFL in scoring (332 points) and have scored at least 20 points in all but one game this season…the Chargers have scored over 30 six times and over 40 three times…the Chargers lead the NFL in second-half (200) and fourth-quarter (122) scoring.

· The Chargers were 8-of-12 (67%) on third downs in Sunday’s win over the Broncos, including 4-of-5 in the second half…in the last two games (at Cincinnati and Denver), the Chargers are a combined 17-of-26 (.654) on third downs and a remarkable 12-of-14 (.857) in the second halves…the Bolts were 8-of-9 in the second half in Cincy…for the season, the Chargers .496 third down conversion percentage (68-of-137) ranks second in the NFL…the team record for season third-down percentage (since 1970) is .489 in 1981 (108-of-221).

LaDainian Tomlinson MVP?

NFL.com's Vic Carucci writes LaDainian Tomlinson is becoming the National Football League's most valuable player. What do you think?

"The conversation regarding MVP of the NFL has changed. Peyton Manning once appeared a lock for the honor. Now LaDainian Tomlinson is running away with it -- literally. Tomlinson's history-making statistics are staggering, but the guy is about much more than sheer numbers. He is a playmaker who performs at his best at the most critical times in a game. For the second week in a row, the Chargers needed another dramatic comeback to win. And Tomlinson's touchdowns (three rushing and one receiving) were the key to making it happen. He not only is the best running back and best player in the league. He is making a legitimate case to be regarded as the best running back -- and perhaps best player -- in league history. Philip Rivers also has had a major hand in the Chargers' dramatic comebacks. He continues to show composure and wisdom well beyond that of a typical first-year starter and third-year pro. His teammates marvel about how he carries himself as a six- or seven-year veteran in practice and meetings. And he demonstrates that level of maturity when he plays. Despite the suspension of linebacker Shawne Merriman and multiple injuries on defense, the Chargers can make a deep run in the postseason with the dynamic play of Tomlinson and Rivers."

Tomlinson makes history

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson made history Sunday night in Denver. Tomlinson became the fastest player in NFL history to reach the century mark. Tomlinson reached 100 in his 89th games, four games ahead of the record that's shared by Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith.

No fine for McCree

After further review the NFL has determined that Chargers safety Marlon McCree will not be fined. Some thought McCree’s fourth-quarter hit on Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh was a dirty play. Not according to the National Football League and other who seen multiple replays.

“His contact with T.J. Houshmandzadeh was properly flagged for pass interference because the contact was made prior to the attempted reception. However, McCree did not make illegal contact with his helmet or his forearm.” NFL officials report regarding the hit in question. “In reviewing the play, it was clear that McCree made contact with his shoulder into Houshmandzadeh's shoulder, which is legal. Then, as Houshmandzadeh fell to the ground, his helmet made contact with linebacker Randall Godfrey's knee.”

“(McCree) was just trying to make a play on the ball. He got there a little too soon." Houshmandzadeh said, "It wasn’t actually his hit that hurt me. It was the fact that the linebacker (Godfrey) was coming so fast. (Godfrey) tried to jump over me but as he jumped, he kneed me in the head. It was just one of those split-second type of accidents, basically.”

“It was shoulder-to-shoulder; it was not helmet-to-helmet. The officials had it right: it was defensive pass interference." Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer said earlier this week. "They also had it right when they didn’t throw a flag for unnecessary roughness.”

Including last week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, McCree has been penalized only twice since joining the Chargers. The other penalty was defensive holding.
