Larry English agrees to five-year contract

The Chargers have agreed to terms on a five-year deal with first-round draft choice Larry English.

English, a 6-2, 255-pound outside linebacker from Northern Illinois, was the 16th overall pick in April’s NFL draft.

With English agreeing to terms, the only draft pick that remains unsigned is wide receiver Demetrius Byrd, a seventh-round pick who is recovering from an April automobile accident.

Chargers reach agreements with four draft picks

The Chargers have agreed to terms on four-year contracts with third-round pick Louis Vasquez and fourth round picks Vaughn Martin, Tyronne Green and Gartrell Johnson.

Fifth-round selection Brandon Hughes signed his rookie contract in June.

This leaves the Chargers with just three unsigned picks: first-rounder Larry English; sixth-rounder Kevin Ellison, and seventh-rounder Demetrius Byrd.

Rookies and select veterans will be on the field Monday morning for the first training camp practice.  The entire squad will be on the field together for the first time on Friday, July 31.

Linebacker Anthony Felder has also agreed to terms on a contract and will re-join the team on Monday. An undrafted free agent from Cal-Berkeley, Felder spent the spring with the Chargers but was released in June.

Chargers release Wilhelm

The Chargers have released linebacker Matt Wilhelm.

A fourth-round pick in 2003, Wilhelm played six seasons with the Chargers, recording 247 tackles and six interceptions. Wilhelm started 14 games in 2007 and recorded a career-high 144 tackles. In 2008 he split time in the starting lineup with Tim Dobbins and recorded 68 stops.

’09 Camp closed to public

San Diego CA-July 1, 2009 – The San Diego Chargers announced today that the team’s 2009 Training Camp will be closed to the public due to on-going repairs being conducted to the underground storm drain system in the area.
