Rivers signs contract extension through 2015

Posted by Joel Price on August 24, 2009 – 4:01 PM

The San Diego Chargers announced that quarterback Philip Rivers today signed a contract extension through 2015. No terms of the contract were released.

“This is a great day for the Chargers and Chargers fans,” said team President Dean Spanos. “Philip has proven he has all of the necessary qualities to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. He’s a proven winner and an unquestioned leader for this football team.”

General Manager A.J. Smith: “We feel Philip is an outstanding player with a very bright future. It’s a great feeling knowing he will be with us for many years to come.”

After joining the Chargers in 2004, Rivers became the starting quarterback in 2006 and has led the team to the playoffs in each of the past three seasons. His career record as a starter, including playoffs, is 36-18 (.667), including 22-5 (.815) at home. He also holds the Chargers’ record with a 92.9 career passer rating.

Last season he eclipsed Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts’ team record for touchdown passes in a single season with a league-high 34. He also led the NFL with a quarterback rating of 105.5, another team record. He was cool under pressure throughout the year, illustrated by his passer rating of 110.7 on third down and 111.7 in the fourth quarter. Both marks ranked second in the NFL last season.

Norv wrap up

Posted by Casey Pearce on August 17, 2009 – 1:08 PM

Coach Turner just finished his “day after press conference,” which actually came two days after since players were off Sunday.  (Coaches did work, though).  He reiterated what he said Saturday night about feeling good about getting LT some time.  He really liked the first-team defense.

Norv talked about a lot of individual players and their performances the other night, which we’ll get in the notebook tonight.  Some highlights:

-Merriman looked “quick, confident and physical”

-Buster was at full speed and impressive.  Feeling fine after taking a lot of big hits.

-Gregory is playing with a lot of confidence

-Vasquez is close to getting back.  He’s hoping to have him and Larry English by mid week

-Lots of other vets like Cooper and Jacques should practice today.  Forney will take a day off after playing Sat. but probably will practice tomorrow.

-Starters will be told to get ready to play a half Saturday in Arizona.  LT will probably get another 4-6 touches.

The team practices from 4-6 this afternoon and I’ll blog to fill you in on what happens.

First quarter thoughts

Posted by Casey Pearce on August 15, 2009 – 7:37 PM

Fireworks

Preseason game one: Chargers vs. Seahawks

Here are some observations from the first quarter:

-LT played 11 snaps with four carries for 11 yards, one reception on a screen for 8.  Hit the hole hard, looked good.

-Rivers played two series, then gave way to Volek.  The starting OL is still on the field, so is Hester.

-Interesting that Buster is returning punts and kicks.  He hasn’t been thrown to yet tonight, but he will be.  Interesting preseason for him.

-Mike Scifres is, well, Mike Scifres.  He hit a 55-yard bomb that netted 53 when Hester made an openfield tackle.  His second one landed on the point, bounced straight up and was downed by Michael Bennett at the 4.  Interesting seeing Bennett on the 1st-team punt unit.

-Kevin Burnett’s name is being called a lot.  Always around the ball.

-Seattle has run away from Merriman all night.  Shaun Phillips had a pressure, best pass rush of the night.

Inactives

Posted by Casey Pearce on August 15, 2009 – 6:15 PM

Well, technically there aren’t inactives during the preseason, but here’s who didn’t dress: Gordon, Beckwith, English, Coooper, Dombrowski, Vasquez, Cesaire and Bingham.

LT will play tonight.  They’re announcing defensive starters, so look out for Lights Out.

Burnett starts at Mo, Dobbins moves to Mike, which is what Cooper generally plays.  Vaughn Martin will start at RE.

English out Saturday

Posted by Casey Pearce on August 14, 2009 – 12:04 PM

Norv Turner and his medical staff will get together Saturday and decide the status of several players for the Chargers’ preseason opener against the Seahawks.  The decision has already been made for first-round pick Larry English as well as Stephen Cooper and Ryon Bingham.  They won’t play.

The team held an hour-long walkthrough Friday morning which served as the final prep for Saturday’s game.  Norv has told his starters to “be prepared to play a half,” but they might not play that much.  He’s still undecided on LT.

Darren Sproles was back Friday after the birth of his daughter and was beaming as he talked about her.  That was a neat conversation.

One funny part from Thursday’s practice I didn’t note anywhere, during a goalline period, the third-team offense was on the field against the first-team defense.  LT stood behind the huddle and fired up the defense by chanting, “You can’t run!” There’s a group in the north end zone that regularly chants that saying whenever opponents get stuffed on the ground.  It was a funny moment.

See you Satruday at the Q!
