Nov. 27 when the Chargers culminate their 50th anniversary with a giant
50th Anniversary Block Party. It will be the biggest football tailgate
party of the year. The block party will be open from 5-11 pm. The highlight of the Party will be the introduction of the 50 Greatest
Chargers of all time, as voted by fans on Chargers.com. Aside from the
appearances by these current and former greats, the Charger Girls and a
host of other celebrities will be on hand.

2009 Junior Charger Girls kick-off on Oct. 3
Posted by on September 28, 2009 – 10:30 AMGirls age 7-15 can get an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform on
the Qualcomm Stadium field at halftime of a Chargers game on Sunday,
November 1 when they sign up to be a member of the Junior Charger Girls.
The kick-off is Sat., Oct. 3 at Chargers Park from 12-4 pm. A
non-refundable $95 enrollment fee is due with the enrollment form at the
time of registration. Early registration is strongly advised as space is
limited. Enrollment forms are available online at www.chargers.com.
All participants will have the opportunity to learn from the NFL’s best
cheerleaders, the San Diego Charger Girls. Each performer is asked to
raise a minimum of $175 in sponsor pledges. The money raised will help
support the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Chargers Community
Foundation. Junior Charger Girls who raise the pledge minimum will receive three
clinics with the Charger Girls, autographed Charger Girls team photo,
half-time show uniform and pom-poms, commemorative t-shirt and a game
ticket.
The group clinics will teach the dance routines and prepare all
different talent levels for the show.

Philip Rivers passed for 303 yards today, his second-consecutive game of more than 300 yards. Combined with his 436-yard effort last Sunday against Baltimore (739 yards) are the most by a Chargers quarterback in a two game stretch since Dan Fouts passed for 784 yards in a two-game stretch in 1985. Fouts, who was in the CBS broadcast booth at Qualcomm Stadium for both of Rivers’ games, passed for 440 yards against Seattle on Sept. 15, 1985 and 344 at Cincinnati on Sept. 22, 1985.
Vincent Jackson was the Chargers’ leading receiver today with 120 yards. It’s the second week in a row and the first time in his career that he’s recorded back-to-back 100-yard games (141 vs. Baltimore)
Eric Weddle had the first interception return for a touchdown of his career today (31 yards). It was his second career TD as he returned a fumble 86 yards for a score last year vs. Atlanta.
The Chargers had no new injuries to report. Shawne Merriman did not return to the game for the second half after re-aggravating a previous groin injury.

Local blackout lifted for Chargers-Dolphins game
Posted by on September 24, 2009 – 1:08 PMEnough tickets have been sold to lift the local television blackout and allow Southern California to see the CBS Sports telecast of the Chargers-Dolphins game on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Qualcomm Stadium. Kickoff is 1:15 p.m. PT. The game will be televised in San Diego on KFMB-TV, Channel 8 and in Los Angeles on KCBS-TV, Channel 2. Dick Enberg and Dan Fouts will call the play-by-play action.
A limited number of tickets, including Club Level tickets, are still available at the Chargers’ ticket office at Gate C at Qualcomm Stadium, at www.Chargers.com and through TicketMaster at 800-745-3000.
The Chargers’ next home game is Monday night, Oct. 19 versus the Denver Broncos. The NFL has designated the game a “Legacy Game” in honor of the 50th Anniversary Season of the American Football League. The team expects to honor former Chargers greats Lance Alworth, John Hadl, Keith Lincoln and Ron Mix at the game. The Chargers, Broncos and Charger Girls will be wearing their Throwback uniforms from the 1960s as will the game officials. The field and music also will be reminiscent of the earlier era of Chargers football. There are approximately 5,000 tickets still available for the game on Oct. 19.

Hardwick undergoes ankle surgery
Posted by on September 23, 2009 – 3:11 PMChargers Pro Bowl center Nick Hardwick underwent surgery on his left ankle today and is expected to miss the next eight weeks. Hardwick, in his sixth season as the team’s starting center, was injured in the Chargers’ season opener in Oakland on Sept. 14.

2,500 general tickets remain to lift NFL TV blackout

Chargers sign Boone, add depth to defensive line
Posted by on September 22, 2009 – 1:42 PMTo help fill the void created when Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jamal Williams was placed on Reserve-Injured due to a tricep injury, the Chargers signed nine-year veteran Alfonso Boone to bolster depth along the defensive line.
Boone, who played under Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera for three years and defensive line coach Don Johnson two years with the Chicago Bears, signed a one-year contract with San Diego. The 6-5, 305-pound Boone has appeared in 113 games in his career with 37 starts. He spent the last two seasons (2007-08) with the Chiefs where he started 19 games at defensive tackle. Boone played for the Bears from 2000-06 and appeared in Super Bowl XLI with the club. The Saginaw, Michigan native was originally a seventh-round draft choice of the Lions in 2000 out of Mt. San Antonio College.

Postgame Notes: Ravens at Chargers
Posted by on September 20, 2009 – 6:25 PM- Philip Rivers passed for a career-high 436 yards today, tying Dan Fouts, for the fourth-most prolific passing day in team history…Fouts happened to be in the broadcast booth at Qualcomm Stadium this afternoon, working as an analyst on CBS.
- Included in Rivers’ day was a career-long 81-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles in the first quarter. The play tied for the ninth-longest pass play in team history.
- Sproles finished the day with 278 all-purpose yards – 26 rushing, 124 receiving and 128 on kickoff returns. It was the ninth-best all-purpose day in team history. For Sproles, it also marked his second-consecutive 200-yard game as he accounted for 264 yards – 23 rush, 43 receiving, 10 punt return and 170 kickoff return – in Monday’s season-opener in Oakland.
- Sproles’ 124 yards receiving were a career-high, as well as his first-ever 100-yard receiving game.
- Vincent Jackson had the second-best receiving day of his career today with 141 yards, seven yards shy of his career-high of 148 against Oakland last Dec. 4, 2008.
- It was Sproles’ ninth-career 200-yard game.
- The Chargers reported only two injuries from today’s game, linebackers Shawne Merriman and Shaun Philips both suffered groin injuries.

Chargers select captains
Posted by on September 10, 2009 – 4:59 PMSan Diego Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner announced today that the players voted for team captains for the 2009 season and selected Philip Rivers and LaDainian Tomlinson as offensive captains; Stephen Cooper and Jamal Williams as defensive captains, and Kassim Osgood as the special teams captain.
This is the seventh year that Tomlinson has served as a captain and the fourth for Rivers. Cooper is serving his first captaincy while Williams was chosen for the fifth year. Osgood is also a fifth-year team captain.
