Statements regarding Shawne Merriman

Posted by Joel Price on September 6, 2009 – 12:46 PM

Statement from Shawne Merriman:

“On September 6, 2009 the San Diego Sheriffs Department responded to a citizen’s complaint that was initiated by Tila Nguyen (aka Tila Tequila). I was taken into custody based upon that complaint. At the time, I was concerned about her welfare given the intoxicated state she appeared to be in and I encouraged her to stay until safe transportation could be provided. We would all do our best to help a friend if we considered their actions to be detrimental to their personal safety. I in no way caused any harm to Ms Nguyen, however, paramedics were called and she was examined but no injuries were reported. She was released and has since returned to Los Angeles, California. There have been no charges filed against me. I want to thank the San Diego Sheriffs Department for their professionalism. I will continue to cooperate fully with the Department and I look forward to clearing my name regarding these false allegations. I want to put this behind me so I can continue to focus on a successful season for the San Diego Chargers.”

Statement from General Manager A.J. Smith:

‘It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving Shawne Merriman. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.”

i find it very disappointing that Shawne would have put himself in this situation. I can’t believe he doesn’t have better taste than to date Tila Tequila, as if he doesn’t have a long enough road ahead of him to try and win back a lot of fans after his steroid incident a couple years ago. I have been a Charger fan all my life, but not for players that act like this.

The world has enough problems, we don’t need things like this. I didn’t figure Shawne to be someone that would do that, but you see, you never know. I guess he still has a lot of growing up to do.

I very highly regard Shawne. I hope that these allegations are proven to be false.

I’m so disappointed! How do we explain things like this to our kids? Do I want my son wearing his #56 jersey? Do I want my son looking up to Shawne Merriman? I don’t think so! Shawne not only needs to think of himself, he needs to think about his team and his fans. What more can he do before the Chargers decide to get rid of him?!?

I heard she laughed at his blue mohawk…..

Shawne, you disappoint me! You’re young, wealthy and famous but need to learn to pick your friends better, Tila Tequila, come on Shawne, you’re much better than that. Dude, if you want to be a role model and leader, then you’ve got to act like one. Your behavior right now is not consistent with either. Steroids in the past and now this, what’s next? Come on Shawne, step it up and be a man, don’t let stupidity bring you down. I know you can win back my respect for you…just do it!

Merriman’s close friends who were also at the house party. One of them anonymously told the police “Tia was trying to leave in her car *INTOXICATED* and Shawne tried to stop her, and she got belligerent, and things got out of hand”.

While I would never condone violence (especially against a woman) this situation sounds more like Shawne was drug into the situation and handled it badly. Just hide her keys and call her a cab for God’s sake.

Wake up, grow up and become a role model, Merriman. Do let immaturity and poor judgement take over. If you want to talk big, be the big man on Twitter and be a role model, than now is the time to decide who to spend your time with. Open you eyes, young man, and realize that you have an amazing opportunity, don;t be just one more jerk athlete on the cover of the National Enquirer.

I am going to wait until I hear more of the story before I pass any judgement on this. If Tila was drunk and trying to leave with fists blazing, maybe Shawne was just trying to keep peace with her…

I did some research on this and it looks like Merriman hasn’t even been charged with anything. I think Tequila was just pissed and drunk. Merriman wasn’t drinking that night.

You will always find yourself in some sort of trouble when you associate with depraved individuals such as her.I find her to be so disgusting and immoral that I do not care to even mention her name.I am highly disappointed to hear that Mr Merriman would exercise such poor judgment in both action and affiliation

I hope the NFL suspends him!! What a freakin’ Moron!!! If SD is going to win lets make it with guys with Character & Class. What is this the RAIDERS!!!

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? You all don’t have the full story… Come on people don’t prosecute the man until you know all the facts!!!

Why not wait for all the info before all you idiots start throwing stones, hope you live in a glass house. Have you ever see any of her shows or internet crap she’s always drunk and causing shit! Yes bad choice on Shawns part for even associating himself with her but that is most likely all he is guilty of and I would assume he’s again learned a crappy lesson.
Speaking of role models, Let’s see would I rather my daughter wear a 56 jersey or feel sorry for a tramp, I’ll stick with the jersey.

damn. i guess this is just another reason A.J. prolly wont be signing shawne back after this year. i really dont think its entirely true. i mean you know how the media likes to blow things out of proportion. i wasnt there so im with the innocent until PROVEN guilty side. shawne your the man. you are the heart of our defense. and you have the best sack dance EVER. if you have to leave, plz dont go to the pat’s or the raiders =)

As a life long Charger fan I am glad that the Chargers over the past few years have decided to sign more than just nice guys. This is professional football, we need players with an edge to bring us the Super bowl ring. This is not a gentle sport, we dont need a team of total gentlemen. All tongue in checkness aside, I do not condone violence against women, but lets be honest, if we looked at everyone and 52 of there friends, I am sure we would see the same things in your circle. This is nothing more than a microcosm of the real world. We all know people with demons of various kinds. He should be treated no differently than the person you know of that has done the same thing.

I hope he isn’t allowed to be on the field until this is resolved. I can assure you he would get booood by many people if he was. Professional football is full of criminals and thugs. Look at Vick (convicted felon), and they still signed him. I will not be renewing my season tickets next year. The NFL should be called the National Felon League.

Remember people these are allegations, not proven yet. He is innocent until proven guilty. So get off your moral high horse and lets see how this plays out. I will support Shawn until proven guilty.

Unfortunate in any case. Take this as a “learning tool”, have a good year and show everyone you are a SPECIAL PLAYER. Keep away from this Bimbo and run with the bulls.

What do you expect Shawn, play with snakes and you are gonna get bit… Stay away from people like her, they are nothing but trouble.

Are we to believe an immature woman who, on her “reality” show, tells adult men and women to get into cages and take off their clothes and who showed little concern for anyone but herself on the night in question, or a good standing member of the NFL?

Hats off to Mr. Merriman who acted maturely and may have saved harm of innocents in Ms. Nguyen’s path as she would have sat behind the wheel of a vehicle, intoxicated, by deciding for her the option; DRINK or DRIVE. May all follow his message.

People I know you do not understand how the justice system works but please stop throwing dirt on #56. I agree that #56 should hang out with better female companions than Tila “La Puta” Tequila, for sure but the fact is that anyone can place an individual under citizen’s arrest. If you make the accusation and sign a complaint form an officer must act on it. It all come backs to you if you place someone under arrest and it is determined that you had no grounds to place a person under arrest. Please #56 was trying to stop some drunk chic from crashing on the Poway grade. All you haters and even AJ Smith on behalf of #56, SUCK IT! #56 is the heart of our DEFENSE PERIOD!

Shawne put himself in a bad position. He handled things wrong, he should have just hid her keys and called a cab. Hopefully he learns from this and keeps people like Tila far away from him. She is nothing and has nothing to lose, he has everything to lose! I love my #56 Jersey and hope all this gets straightened out. GO BOLTS!!!

Oh such a perfect world we portray we live in. Really, is it any of our business outside of the family circle who others decide to socialize with! Is it not obvious that Shawn acted without hesitation and prevented what could have been a total disaster. How about we give the man a break, what happend to your support Charger Fans!
