Turner signs three-year extension

Posted by Joel Price on January 18, 2010 – 8:32 PM

San Diego President Dean Spanos signed Head Coach Norv Turner to a three-year contract extension today, extending his contract through the 2013 season.  “I’m extremely proud of the job Norv has done with this team,” said Spanos. “In three seasons he’s led the team to three division titles.  I’m confident that if we strengthen our roster and continue to provide Norv the assets he needs, this team will have continued success.”

Turner has the top overall winning percentage in team history at .648 (35-19) as well as the top regular-season percentage (32-16, .667).  The Chargers are 13-0 in December under Turner and 4-3 in January.  His three playoff wins are tied for most in team history.  The team’s 13 regular-season wins in 2009 are the second most in team history, and includes a team-high seven wins on the road and a 4-0 sweep of the NFC East.  The team committed the second-fewest turnovers (17) and the third-fewest penalty yards (570) during the regular season.  Its 78 penalties are the fewest by the Chargers since 1976 when there were 14-game seasons.

Turner’s leadership did not go unnoticed nationally as USA Today named him its NFL Coach of the Year.

Marty did not kiss AJ,S Butt…..he had best record… Norv took Marty’s team and could not win when they needed to, Marty’s team is now getting old and will be replaced by Norvs team, and it will get as good as the rest of Norvs teams…..Lousy!

Wow wat an idiot move!!! WTF r dey thinking giving this pussy play calling coach an extension he sucks he’s not good da talent on our team makes him look good but he sucks!! Wow I’m very dissapointed with this move another dumb move having so many coaches available
    1. Bill Cowher
    2. Bill Billichek
    3. Norm Edwards
    4. Tony Dungy
    5. Leslie Frazier ( Vikings defensive cord)
I would have even been happier with Pete Carroll as our next coach!!
Sorry LT all this means dat ur not gonna win a superbowl & it sukz cuz u gave us ur best years!!
Let’s get Ed reed in here we need a big time defensive player!!
It shows how much dey care bout winning we don’t have a shot until his contract is over or he gets fired….

LT=gone, Merriman=gone…. all hopes of EVER winning the big one=gone, this team is dead, they will never win the SB until they get a real coach, yes I read turners numbers, but his record does not, NOT include winning as a HEAD coach. Such a unprepared, uncoached, unmotivated team has NEVER been in a playoff game before, and that is all coaching fault. Add it up chargers+turner=losers……

I feel so bad for chargers fans. I live in So Cal so most people are charger fans and we have to see it every year, the great opportunity to the letdown. Now they resigned Turner? He was what was wrong with ur team. All the talent but a pussy of a head coach. Im a huge LT fan and felt for him on the sidelinesknowing this year was the chagers last chance at it for a while. Spanos needs to worry more about his player personal and not signing extensions to coaches. Good Luck to the chargers in 2010 but with turner calling the plays? Good thing they play in the West huh? theyll make the playoffs cause of their weak division and Spanos will be happy with Norvsjob, its pathetic to see this to such a good franchise.

Sad day today in the lives of San Diego Charger fans everywhere, even way up here in North Dakota. Seems like a bad time in history to be a President! Obama screwing up the country and Spanos screwing up the Chargers and any hopes of this franchise ever being able to achieve the glory that has eluded them for so very long. LT and Merriman will sadly be gone next year, leaving the weight of the team on Rivers’ shoulders to lead into the playoffs (hopefully) only to lose in the 1st round due to horrible coaching. I have been a Charger fan my whole life and struggle to maintain my devotion to a franchise that refuses to make the moves to achieve the Championship that it’s players deserve and there fans can support them through. Dean Spanos in a cancer the Chargers need to get rid of if they want to succeed EVER!

Why celebrate mediocrity? We need to move forward. Last year we made the championship game and weren’t even healthy. Sunday was a disgrace. The Jets should not be beating us in our own house..these were not the Colts or Steelers.

Why is Norv Turner being rewarded for failing?

Why worry about winning a Super Bowl when we can ALMOST do it year after year. Dean just guaranteed us 3 more years of “ALMOST.” Year after year after year I get sick and tired of getting my hopes up, only to be let down. This Charger has a Hemi, and loaded with power. Yet it keeps stalling right before the finish line. This team was NOT PREPARED for the Jets. Yes Kaeding screwed the pooch. Ultimately a couple of field goals shouldn’t have decided this game. We had 2 WEEKS to get ready for this game, which was played AT HOME! Who’s job is it to prepare for the Jets? The head coach. The had coach should be fired, NOT rewarded with a 3 year extension. I’m predicting another slow start, 1-5. We’ll make the playoffs and Norv will be predictable, and we’ll lose in the first or second game, AGAIN! This will continue through 2013. This really blows.

We are lucky the Chargers appear to have a cush schedule for next year, but unless we start making some serious moves in the off season I see us coming down to the same situation of making the playoffs only to be bounced out in the first round. I love LT…. he’s been the backbone for the team for so many years, but I would have to say his days are over. Would have been nice to have M. Turner, but whatever no point in going down that road. I think we need to pickup a rb in the draft or off of free agency. Then the O is solid. The D on the other hand. Merriman needs to go. Cromartie…..my God I cant wait to see this guy go. So many times I’ve watched this guy avoid tackles or turn around and run AWAY form the ball carrier or just try to strip the ball only to see the ball carrier shake him off and pickup another 10-15 yards. Pathetic. We need a few other holes to fill and some healthy players and then we should be solid on the D too.

Wow, I thought I was in the minority but every comment here is exactly what I feel. Norv Turner, like Marty before him, will not take the Chargers to the next level. An extension? Are you Fu***** kidding me???

Yes it is a very sad day for all us Chargers Fans. 3 more years of 1 and done.(if Norv even makes it that far) It is very obvious that Norv cannot make it over that playoff hump. Lets face it, he can get them thru the regular season but chokes every year in the playoffs. If the Spano’s family is fine with a 1 and done team playoff team, then maybe its time they get out of the business. So many Charger fans are fed up.
Lets put the blame where it belongs, on the owners. Dean, you really need to listen to your fans. They are not a bunch of beer drinking hot dog eating idiots, but educated professionals that know and love this game and team. Lets be honest, I have seen youth coaches(that volunteer their time) call a better game then your highly over paid so called head coach.
Maybe its time that your fans speak out. By that i mean lets not purchase any Charger items and not attend the games. Maybe after loosing millions per game you will finally wake.

The reports are that Norv Turner’s numbers show how successful he has been. However, the Chargers have won IN SPITE of him, not because of him. Mr. Spanos, be serious. A perfect example is the game against the Bengals. They were winning by a large margin so Turner goes into his consevative mode. The Bengals catch up and the Chargers pull out the win with a last minute field goal. That should not have happened!! Against the Jets he continuously ran LT up the middle. Norv, you can’t do that!!! Norv Turner does not have the killer instinct that coaches like Bill Belichick and Bill Cowher have. That’s why they’re winners and Norv Turner will never get over the hump. With as much talented athletes as he had this year there is just no excuse. Norv, you’re fired!!!
