Practice Extras: July 28

I’m sure everyone knows by now that the Chargers and TE Antonio Gates have agreed to a contract through 2015.

That will, I’m sure, be the big story before the veterans report Friday.

Meantime, here are some tidbits from Wednesday’s practice.

• CB Traye Simmons logged his second interception in three practices, boxing out WR Jeremy Williams in double coverage to make an athletic catch. Williams later caught a pass down the right sideline despite tight coverage from Simmons.

• RB Shawnbrey McNeal drew some hoots from teammates after a pair of sharp cuts up the middle near the end zone.

• WR Gary Banks flicked a 40-yard pass to a receiver down the right sideline. The spiral drew a pleased laugh from fellow Alabama native, QB Philip Rivers.

• OLB Brandon Lang reached RB Curtis Brinkley in the backfield.

• ILB Kevin Burnett broke up a goal-line pass for WR Gary Banks on the last play of a red zone blitz period, but not before WR Legedu Naanee caught a fade in the right corner of the end zone against single coverage.

• Naanee later speared a rifle across the middle in traffic from Rivers. Rivers then looked off defenders and slipped a pass to TE Richie Brockel in space.

Stay true and keep pounding,
Christopher
