Oct. 24, 2010 – New England at San Diego

The Chargers defense made Tom Brady look pedestrian in the first half – Brady completed 6-of-16 passes for 35 yards – but turnovers on four consecutive possessions stalled San Diego’s offense.

When the Patriots opened the second half with a 17-play touchdown drive, the Chargers trailed 20-3. More than half the third quarter expired before they got the ball.

The teams traded field goals to start the fourth quarter before Antonio Gates’ four-yard touchdown ignited a comeback attempt that fell short on a 50-yard field goal that dinged off the right upright.

Here are some snapshots from Qualcomm Stadium:

The Chargers recognized Breast Cancer Awareness Month against the Patriots, adding pink to the field and the players’ uniforms.

Quentin Jammer halts Patriots running back Danny Woodhead at the 1-yard line during the first quarter. Woodhead, New England’s leading rusher during the game, carried eight times for just 24 yards.

Antwan Barnes pressures New England’s Tom Brady on a pass play. Barnes sacked Brady twice and the Chargers limited the unanimous All-Pro quarterback to 3.6 yards per attempt.

Antonio Gates tore his plantar fascia a week earlier against St. Louis and did not have a catch against New England until this four-yard touchdown with 7:21 left in the game. That got the Chargers within 23-13 and set up a successful onside kick.

Mike Tolbert punched into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown after Richard Goodman recovered the onside kick as San Diego closed to 23-20.

Antwan Applewhite wrestles BenJarvus Green-Ellis down for a one-yard loss on fourth-and-1 with 1:55 left.

Kris Brown attempts a 50-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter. The kick had enough distance but caromed off the right upright.

Stay true and keep pounding,
Christopher

Oct. 17, 2010 – San Diego at St. Louis

The Chargers lost Malcom Floyd (hamstring) and Antonio Gates (foot) to injury in the first half and again fell behind 17-0.

Philip Rivers and Patrick Crayton led a comeback that got San Diego within 20-17, but Steven Jackson picked up two crucial first downs for the Rams late in the fourth quarter that enabled St. Louis to run out the clock and preserve the win.

Here are some snapshots from St. Louis:

Antonio Gates, left, and Philip Rivers stand near midfield at the Edward Jones Dome during pregame warm-ups. The duo entered the game as one of the NFL’s most prolific combinations. Gates caught at least one touchdown pass in each of his last nine regular-season games.

Gates catches two passes for 12 yards before leaving early in the second quarter with what was diagnosed as a torn plantar fascia in his right foot.

St. Louis safety Oshiomogho Atogwe intercepts a deep ball intended for Floyd in the end zone. Floyd suffered a hamstring injury during the game that limited him to five games and 13 catches the rest of the season.

Antwan Barnes pressures rookie quarterback Sam Bradford, who releases the ball with a hand in his face.

Left tackle Marcus McNeill, in his stance before the snap, plays his first game of the 2010 season.

Nate Kaeding attempts a 49-yard field goal that would get blocked. Kaeding (groin) was injured before the game and missed the next three games. The Chargers signed Kris Brown to kick during Kaeding’s absence.

Rivers slides out of the pocket to his left as Rams defensive tackle Fred Robbins applies pressure.

Crayton attempts to leap over St. Louis cornerback Ron Bartell after one of his six catches for 117 yards.

Luis Castillo makes a form tackle on Jackson after a three-yard run. San Diego called timeout after the play to set up third-and-6 at the St. Louis 36 with 2:24 left and pressure mounting on the Rams, but Jackson rushed for nine yards on the play and the Chargers never got the ball back.

Stay true and keep pounding,
Christopher
