Chargers Visit MCAS Miramar

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 31, 2011 – 3:44 PM

San Diego held a walk-through at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar for the fifth consecutive year Wednesday.

Head Coach Norv Turner and Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Conant display their respective gifts Tuesday.

Conant after the Chargers presented him with a helmet autographed by the entire team: "We're gonna give you a weapon!" Turner displays the engraved and mounted knife to his players.

The Chargers line up on the Miramar practice field beneath the air station's logo.

WR Bryan Walters works against the always-energetic CB Ramon Broadway.

QB Philip Rivers and WR Vincent Jackson coach up a receiver for the Miramar Falcons.

The Falcons WR snags a deep touchdown pass from Rivers after losing his defender with a double move.

During the second 1-on-1 passing drill, the defensive back (No. 23) swatted the pass down.

Defensive coordinator Greg Manusky wears a camo hat during the walk-through.

A pair of Marines watch the Chargers as part of an appreciative group of spectators.

Chief Executive Officer A.G. Spanos and Turner listen to Colonel Frank Richie speak about the importance of the Marines.

DE Vaughn Martin poses with a Miramar Falcons defensive back.

WR Seyi Ajirotutu signs an autograph for one of 32 Wounded Warriors that watched Wednesday's walk-through.

Chargers at Cardinals: Halftime Quotes

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 27, 2011 – 8:52 PM

Head Coach Norv Turner

On the first half: “We went out and gave up two big plays on defense. When you turn the ball over for a touchdown, you dig yourself a hole. I liked the drive to get us back in it. We’re in a one-score game and we get the ball first. We’ve got a chance to go do something with it.”

TE Antonio Gates

On playing for the first time since Dec. 5: “It was good, man. It was like riding a bike again. There’s still a lot of rust but I think the best thing is just going out there getting the repetitions and see how I feel being in a live game again.”

On the offenses’ focus in preseason: “Just going out there and making a play. That’s what it’s about. Philip does a great job of putting us in position to make a play. We’re all on the same page. For us, it’s about continuing to work at it to try to be as successful as we can offensively.”

On the TD catch: “My eyes get big when we get in the red zone anyway. I just had to get a feel for what the defense was trying to do and fortunately Philip was able to catch me in the back.”

Chargers at Cowboys: Halftime Quotes

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 21, 2011 – 6:54 PM

Head Coach Norv Turner

On his impressions of the first half

Practicing against the Cowboys for two days I think gave our guys a good feel for getting ready to play them. They used it. I’m pleased with the balance we had on offense. I liked getting Ryan involved. He looked awfully sharp. Defensively, we gave up the one drive and we missed some tackles but for the most part I was really pleased.

Philip Rivers

On his impressions of the first half

The first drive we go three-and-out, then we bounce right back and get points. I felt good again. We’re continuing to improve, but we’ve still got a lot of work to do.

On practicing against the Cowboys

There wasn’t the kind of ‘get to know each other’ feel at the first of the game. We played something like 80 plays against each other over the two days of practice. We were ready to go right off the bat.

Eric Weddle

On the INT

A little dropper. I read play-action right away. The backside receiver, I knew he had a nasty split and communicated to the back end. I thought he was going to do a deep curl but he kept going, so I fell back and read Romo and just made a play. It was a big play. Got the ball back to the offense. It’s what we’ve been preaching and stressing is making turnovers and getting the ball back to the offense.

On if practicing with the Cowboys helped.

I think it helped gain a feel for their tempo, how they play. When you get out here, schematics goes out the window. They’re not going to do the same stuff they showed the last couple days. We knew how they were going to come out with a tempo so we had to come out fast and physical and play our technique and play a straight game from there.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 18

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 18, 2011 – 10:12 AM

Thursday morning’s practice session was early for San Diego. The Chargers got practice waking up at a different hour, as breakfast and treatment both began by 4:30 a.m. PT. The team left the hotel for Valley Ranch at 6:15 a.m. PT.

The Chargers and Cowboys got a competitive two-hour practice, beginning with a punt coverage period. Then they split into two fields: San Diego offense vs. Dallas defense; Dallas offense vs. San Diego defense. There were plenty of reps to go around.

The teams seemed aimable, with former Charger Igor Olshansky greeting San Diego’s offensive line with a smile. Only one brief scuffle broke out during practice as the teams managed to stay civil despite the intensity, an obvious notch above normal practice.

The temperature climbed to the upper 90s by the time Thursday's practice finished. These ambulances served as a friendly welcome, the first thing to greet the Chargers at Valley Ranch.

ILB Takeo Spikes takes a squeeze of water on the sideline.

Head Coach Norv Turner catches up with Jason Garrett (right), now the Dallas head coach. Garrett played quarterback for the Cowboys under Turner.

RB Ryan Mathews gets off the bus for Thursday's joint practice.

TE Antonio Gates makes a short catch across the middle.

WR Patrick Crayton finishes a "third down" play. Crayton, a former Cowboy, was swarmed by the Dallas media after practice.

SS Bob Sanders tries to cut off Dallas TE Jason Witten.

G-T Tyronne Green gets some 1-on-1 work with a Dallas defensive lineman.

QB Philip Rivers leads the starting offensive huddle.

Mathews makes a cut downfield, setting up a block by WR Malcom Floyd.

Rivers talks to the WRs between repetitions.
