Training Camp Recap: Aug. 10

The Chargers held a two-hour practice in shells Wednesday morning, the final training camp session before the start of preseason. San Diego will not practice again until Saturday afternoon.
 
About 15 players will not participate Thursday, Head Coach Norv Turner said. The team has taken a conservative approach, especially on key veterans like Antonio Gates, preferring to avoid risks while the regular-season opener remains more than a month away.
 
RB Ryan Mathews returned to practice Tuesday and responded well enough to take the field again Wednesday. Turner wasn’t ready to say whether Mathews will play against Seattle and insinuated the Chargers will evaluate No. 24 again Thursday before making a decision.

WR Vincent Jackson, catching a pass with CB Traye Simmons nearby, is ready to play in his first preseason game since 2009. The presence of two bookend 6-foot-5 receivers is a pretty sight for QB Philip Rivers and the Chargers faithful.

FB Dean Rogers caught several passes Wednesday, including this one at the goal line with SS Bob Sanders attempting to rip the ball free.

CB Ramon Broadway tips a pass intended for WR Vidal Hazelton.

NFL offenses will face several physical veteran leaders up the middle of San Diego's defense, including CB Quentin Jammer, ILB Takeo Spikes and Sanders.

    protect rivers especially from blitzes. running backs need to block.
