Consider keeping Mike Willie. He is a big (6’2″) receiver that has the potential to become a starting wideout. He along with Vincent Brown may be the ones making the crucial big plays this season. Willie may not be as fast as KR Goodman, but he is already the better wide receiver.

I also like Jackie Battle. Like Willie, he has size and can be tough for offenses to stop especially with McClain in front as FB. Hopefully the Chargers can keep 4 RB’s (Mathews, Brown, Battle, and Brinkley).

Meachem and rookie TE Green have been disappointing in the preseason as has Rivers (1 TD – 4 INT).

Keep Mike Willie because he was productive in the three prior games, and just need more time on the field. That should have been a touchdown but the powers that bve say no, well that shows what he can do and he is my grandson. I am praying for him and the Chargers

Rivers can take a hike as far as I am concerned. Throwing for 4000 yards is meaningless if you throw 20 picks.

  18. By Twigg on Aug 31, 2012 | Reply

Please cut Richard Goodman he is taking up a spot that a much better receiver could be using, I hated seeing him returning kicks last year knowing that there were others on the team that could have done much better Goodman almost never made it to the 20 and got lucky once for a TD. And as for “jess’s” comment about rivers taking a hike well how bout you show me another pro bowl QB that you would like to replace him with huh, yeah there isnt one and whitehurst is awful and could never start you people act like you know what your talking bout but 1 season w/ 20 picks and you decide to forget all the other seasons where he got us to the playoffs and playing w/ 2 injured knees in the AFC championship against new england and much more

  19. By Twigg on Aug 31, 2012 | Reply

Emma Willie: Thats awesome that he’s your grandson I hope he makes the team and gets to contribute he’s got some real talent

  20. By Chris on Aug 31, 2012 | Reply

Keep Willie over Goodman please. Anyone can fill in at KR with the new rules, and cutting Willie will be just as bad as letting Robinson go last year.

    QB-Rivers, Whitehurst
    FB-McClain, Hester
    RB-Mathews, Brown, Brinkley
WR-Meachem, Floyd, Royal, Spurlock, Brown (until we place him on IR on Sept 4)
    TE-Gates, McMichael, Rosario, L. Green
OT-Gaither, Harris, Clary, (the OT we hopefully pick up today)
    OG-Green, Vasquez, Hadnot
    C-Hardwick, Molk
    DE-Liuget, Martin, Cesaire, Reyes
    DT-Garay, Franklin, Thomas
    OLB-Phillips, Johnson, Barnes, Ingram, English
    ILB-Spikes, Butler, Mouton, Williams
CB-Cason, Jammer, Gilchrist, Wright (maybe a fifth CB can make it from the outside)
    FS-Weddle, Lynch
    SS-Bigby, Taylor

  22. By Karl Massera on Aug 31, 2012 | Reply

With the rule change Vincent Brown can go on IR and come back when he is ready halfway in the season that allows the chargers to keep at least on extra body around

I definitly think they should keep spurlock as insurance at the slot receiver position.

Not having a veteran LT ready to go is a killer and they are going to have to play a lot of double tight end or double backs in the backfield to keep rivers upright. But I would still cut Sperry.

I have a feeling Novak is gone which is a shame for some other kicker on another team because they are about to lose their job when they pick up Novak and fire their current kicker. Hopefully Nate stays healthy.

  23. By braxton29 on Aug 31, 2012 | Reply

Karl, it turns out we can’t send him on IR right away. We are going to have to have hold on to him until September 4th to do it because if we IR him right away, he won’t be eligible for reactivation.

Goodman is garbage. I hate him with a passion. Hes too stupid doesn’t know when to knee the ball when its a kick return therefor he sucks. Why the chargers kept him and cut Taylor Embery and Philip Payne I have no idea. Chargers are being stupid again.

22 CUTS. It’s hard ! With the epidemic of injuries, all teams should have a 58 man roster. 2 extra for the O-line alone.
And we’d still have to make room for another LT, for Start of season anyway. PS=Practice Squad
    QB: Jarrett Lee PS
RB: Jackie Battle, Edwin BakerPS (
WR:, Mike Willie PS Michael Spurlock PS
    TE:, Kory Sperry

All you Mooks that cut LB Bront Bird: a sack and an INT and he doesn’t make the team, what does Bird have to do, fly over the stadium? Coaches use the pre-season to see who MAKES PLAYS. And Bird did. by the same principle, keep Willie.

  45. By Jeremy on Aug 31, 2012 | Reply

Norv teams never show any discipline, he needs to jump some assssss on that team for screwing up. Rivers throws interception and Norv shrugs his shoulders and says its OK PART OF THE GAME. REEL IN YOUR TEAM OR SAN DIEGO WILL BECOME A PLACE WHERE YOU USED TO BE THE THE HEAD COACH!!!!!! YOU ARE EXTREMELY LUCKY TO BE THE HEAD COACH, COACH LIKE YOU HAVE SOMETHING TOO LOOSE!!!! OUR WINDOW IS CLOSING, WE WANT A SUPERBOWL RING HERE IN SAN DIEGO!!!!

From the games i have been able to watch i do believe that Mike Willie should be kept. Are you planning on keeping 3 Qb’s bcause i believe Lee has shown he can play the big boy game. I would keep Battle and put the 7th round RB on the Practice Squid. Wide recivers should be Flody, royal Willie with Meachan but he has to inprove better. I would tell the LT that he either practices or he will be cut and shallow the 13 million that was promise to him… Rivers heeds a veteran LT so he can have his blind side protected. Gooooooooooooo Chargersssssssssssss

  47. By Boltsfan1972 on Aug 31, 2012 | Reply

If we don’t win it all after the cuts made today. Norv should be fired!!! Because Cesaire and Hester are good players them alone are enough to fire him!!!!

Despite feeling a bit sad for the players released, I like the list, guess guys like Edwin Baker, Jarrett Lee & Mike Willie would clear waivers and join the practice squad. And Hester’s release, to me is no surprise. One of AJ’s busts. Overall I like it.
