Why so many Captains? Why not two – Offense & Defense? Do all these guys get extra pay & rations? Instant Pro Bowl selection?

I miss Hester

Well deserved… and to answer your question Mr. The Barron…. when you have such great veterans like Gates, Hardwick Spikes, Weddle, and Rivers who show the young guys how to play like an all pro…. Then why not have more then one captain?

1. Matthews can’t be captain, he hasn’t been on the field long enough and hasn’t shown his leadership qualities yet.
2. Team might miss hester on Special Teams but with a solid special teams coach I think we’ll be ok. This is unlike when Kasim Osgood was let go, now that guy was a special, special teams player. and now the team has a TRUE Fullback in McClain.
3. Rivers, Gates, Hardwick, TKO and Weddle are obvious choice. I would have made SCIFRES as Special Teams Capt. but its not up to me, its player’s vote or coach assigned…

Scifres YES! That dude has helped more than people know/appreciate. You gotta wonder about the number of Captains – loses significance but – what do I know ….

Thank god that scrub hester was released.
Team captains aren’t made of glass, injuring
themselves the very first time they touch the ball in the first preseason game

Who cares who the captains are if you can’t win? Tired of this franchise playing like a third world team!! Unlike winning management teams (Steelers, Patriots, Giants, etc) Spanos ownership has yet to provide the leadership to win. If they can’t win perhaps moving to the third world is a good idea. Tijuana Chargers!!!!! Ole

Stuckey flies on special teams, he’s always making plays. Hester was the team captain, Stuckey inherited it.

Pretty much all teams have between 3 and 7 captains, usually only 3 or 4 go in for the coin toss. Most captains have a patch “C” on their jersey, with each consecutive year they are captain has a star on the C. The Jets are the only team with no captains.

The only changes from last year are that they added Gates, and Stuckey in place of Hester. No surprises here, all these guys are the leaders of their respective areas: Weddle qb’s the secondary, tko is the motivational leader and most experienced on defense. Hardwick is the best & most veteran O-lineman, ditto for Gates in the receiving corps. Plus they both play injured all the time. Rivers is our franchise player, imo.

I agree with all the captains. well deserved each and ever one of them..
But I would have loved to see QUENTIN JAMMER as a defensive Captain. the dude has only been in the league since 2003, and rarely if ever, has missed a game.. Straight Pro.
But cant argue with the picks.

good picks for captains. play smart, stay healthy, go chargers!!!

Win or lose… Chargers are great! Go, bolts! You have the best uniform, the best town, the best fans, the best attitude and the best players! Yeah!

I think all of these choices are excellent. Philip and Gates are obvious. Hardwick is the only OL that has been with the Chargers for a whiles, so clearly he will direct the new guys in the trenches. Our TKO is a Vet and a great player, and Weddle is our playmaker on Defense. Stuckey was a great choice. He almost single-handedly changed our kickoff coverage last year. He had the most tackles on SP teams plays and showed dynamic play and energy where we were horrible just a few years ago.

I can see Gates, Hardwick, Stuckey and Weddle. Thats it!! Ryan Matthews?? You’ve got to be kidding me. He’s one more injury away from never hearing his name again. What a waste

This captain thing is irrelevant. True leaders will lead whether there is a “C” stitched on their jersey or not. Pressure is on Chargers for winning results early. No winning results will validate the belief that changes should have been made. You guys are losing your fans. I don’t care who has a “C”. All I care about is a “W”!!!!

I will say Antonio Gates , One of the best TE on NFL

Agree with all the choices for captains. One more thing, I hate when chargers fans hate on the players and coaches and say that we will never win a super bowl. If you hate on your own team you’re not a true fan. Go bandwagon some other team if you don’t believe in the Chargers!

Reied, one thing you must realize is that just because you are critical of your team does not mean you are not a true fan. That was really a stupid comment you made because without complaints and suggestions, how do you expect to get better.
Also, although Chargers will be ok this year, I believe by getting rid of some of the players they did and keeping the others, A.J. Smith is continuing to keep the team at home when the playoffs start.

Reid…sorry hit one too many buttons
By BoltinMia on Sep 10, 2012 | Reply
@Reid, Agree fully. Sound like true Blue/Gold fan. Dont let the haters get to you. and
@Jason, the upper management, ie… A.J.Smith is one of the chargers problems.

Solid… you’ve gotta be in that locker room to really have an opinion. But I think any of us wouldve guessed those vets. Lets take it up a notch this year boys. Play with a chip on your shoulder! And play smart!
