Shurmur: “Rivers is a Top Flight Quarterback”

Posted by Ricky Henne on October 24, 2012 – 12:07 PM

On his conference call with San Diego media today, Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said the number one player his team needs to watch out for is Philip Rivers.

Here is his exact quote:

“(Rivers) is a top flight quarterback in the league.  We’ve got a great deal of respect for Philip.  We’ve got a great understanding that he’s a winner.  All quarterbacks that play have games where they have bad plays.  It’s just a reality of it.  We know that he’s going to come in here and play his best football.”

Do you agree with Shurmur? Let us know what player you think will be the key to winning Sunday’s game in Cleveland in the comments below.

YES, my god the negative attention on Rivers has been too much for a guy who has done so much for this team. The players all trust and love playing for him, and it’s not like every turnover has been his fault (and how many other QBs have had 4 pick games when Rivers just had his first?). He’s not lazy, he puts a lot of effort into improving himself and learning from mistakes and his start to this season wasn’t even bad. I love what Rivers has done for us, how he keeps cool as far as looking ahead and being a leader and I trust he can do what it takes to make this not be a losing season (you know, something we haven’t had in several years).

    Hahaha.

Philip River’s is at best a slightly above average QB who is receding very quickly.

The only way River’s can be considered “Elite” is if he has perfect pass protection, tall receivers like Gates, Floyd, and Jackson, and a credible backfield threat RB.

    AJ should have kept Brees.

Any Average (and above average)QB can be great if the line of scrimmage is dominated the the Offensive Linemen.

The Boltz should be hunting down the best O Lineman (Draft or NFL Vets) and make them offers that cannot be laughed off. Then we’ll see Phillip back to his ole self, you’ll also get to see bigger holes for our backs to run through.

Gentleman, The Game is won at the line of scrimmage. They and only they can make good players great. With ole Rivers age creeping higher and higher, we best get at really great linemen on both sides of the ball. Rivers, and alot of others on this team, deserve to wear a superbowl Ring.

Still pulling for ya Boltz. And ALWAYS will !!

Why is Eli Manning commenting on the Chargers website? Probably because that he realizes that Rivers is twice the QB he will ever be. Go cry to dad and continue hiding in your brothers shadow Eli. I think most of us agree that we are happy you didn’t want to play for us because we found someone better…PHILIP RIVERS

Yes Eli, go on and stand beside your Brother.. Manning was just lucky that we did fall apart on Monday Nite Football. Bcause if we hadn’t we would have been the winners of that game.. Lock what we did in the frist half of the game.. 24 points to 10.. what can i say.. Except Manning u were just lucky that nite..As for Rivers i would take him anyday in to war with me. He has proven himself so many times over the seasons. Just look out leauge we are coming back.. Goooooooo Chargersssssssssss

Shurmur is smart enough to realize the type of competitor Rivers is , he’s not going to give him any extra motivation to go out and do his job.Good Job Pat!

Philip Rivers is Tony Romo’s twin brother.

Stephen and Robert have a textbook case of Stockholm Syndrome.

Rivers has used and abused the team for years, piggybacking on the success of L.T. and looting millions in the process.

The only thing River’s is good at is having kids. Maybe he and Cromartie can have a competition to see who breeds faster.

There is however no competition when it comes to who is a better QB and team leader; the Manning Bros will lay the smack down on the retarded papist from Alabama.

I got to go polish my SB rings now :)

    Laters.

Uhh Eli youve been piggy backing your defense and ur lucky ass catches every year look at the weapons you have sure rivers has some but cruz running back great line sorry but your not a fraction of what your brother is learn to be more respectful and not like a douche who has to go to other qbs vids and be an ass to make yourself feel better just like you go polish the rings your defense and team earned not you

    2 times Super Bowl MVP.

2 times Smack Down on Brady and the Pats.

Don’t need 6’5″ WR’s like VJ and Floyd. I pass to midgets like Cruz and Manningham cuz that’s what a true QB can do.

Now go hear River’s and Turner’s sorry excuses for why your team sucks.

    Take a chill pill.

    To E. Manning

If you understand what really happened re: Drew Brees you will understand that the rest of the NFL had a chance to sign Brees after his injury but only the Dolphins and the Saints were willing to talk with him since the experts (Dr. Andrews) felt he had a 50% chance of recovery.

The Chargers made an offer with lots of performance incentives and the Dolphins passed on him. The Saints were desparate and made him a major offer and to Brees credit he surpassed all medical prognosis and became a great QB.

Eli Manning a a great QB but his father tends to stick his nose into his business (Charger and now Giants) and Peyton (Colts).

If Archie wants to be their agent then he should sign them up….if he wants to be their father–he should step back and be a fan.

    These are the facts…..

  19. By E. Manning on Oct 29, 2012 | Reply

    You want facts???

Philip Rivers against the Cleveland Browns:
    18 for 34, 154 yards passing, 1 sack, 0 TD

Only 4 of those 18 completed passes was to his WR Floyd. The rest were short passes to his RB’s and TE’s.

    Philip Rivers is not “ELI”TE.

WE ARE JUST SO HAPPY HE GOT A JOB WITH THE GIANTS. OUR DAD HAD TO PAY THE GIANTS ALOT OF MONEY TO LET HIM WEAR ONE OF THERE UNIFORMS. ONE DAY YOU MARK MY WORDS, BEFORE LONG HE WILL BE ABLE TO TIE HIS SHOES AND MAYBE EVEN WIPE HIMSELF. ELI, IF YOU ARE READING THIS ,YOU SHOULD BE IN BED BY NOW. YOU KNOW WHAT DAD WILL DO IF HE CATCHES YOU UP AFTER BED TIME… RB MANNING
