Where Do Chargers Fans Come From?

Posted by Jordan Beane on January 29, 2013 – 3:48 PM

With nearly a billion active monthly users, Facebook is home to reams of information on what nearly one seventh of the earth’s population is interested in. From cereal brands to pencil preferences, Ryan Gosling movies to cat GIFs, Facebook can easily compile a thousand lists to create a snapshot of what the world prefers. Now, just in time for the Super Bowl, the folks from Facebook’s Data Science team have presented a county by county map of NFL allegiance based on where the 35 million Facebook users who have “liked” an NFL team reside.

It’s a fascinating look how wide (Packers fans in Alaska, Steelers fans in South Carolina) or narrow (the Jets are only the most popular team in one county – Nassau County – on Long Island) a team’s fandom is spread. As for Chargers fans, they are most numerous in four counties – San Diego, Riverside, Imperial and Orange – out of 3,033 counties in the country. While fans may be puzzled as to why powder blue doesn’t cover a larger swatch of real estate (For instance, the Cowboys are the most popular team in FOUR STATES) let’s take a look at some numbers -

2011 Populations –

Imperial County - Population: 177,057

Orange County - Population: 3,055,745

Riverside County - Population: 2,239,620

San Diego County - Population: 3,140,069

So if Chargers Nation decided to set up their own state based on these four counties, it would be the 12th most populous in the Union, sliding in between New Jersey and Virginia (also I’m sure we’d send Dan Fouts and Hank Bauer to Washington as our Senators). Meanwhile of the 33 least populated counties in the US, three of the top ten are part of Cowboy country (including #3 – King County, Texas, population 286. There are streets in Pacific Beach with higher populations).

Thus, with the majority of 8.6 million people Bolts fans in those four counties, that splash of powder blue doesn’t look so small anymore.

Chargers Super Bowl Connections

Posted by Ricky Henne on January 29, 2013 – 2:55 PM

When Super Bowl XLVII kicks off on Sunday, there are numerous connections to the Bolts on both the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens.

Here are some of the most notable ones:

49ers

San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh played for the Chargers from 1999-00.

Quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst was the offensive coordinator in San Diego during those same two years that Harbaugh played.

Tight ends coach Reggie Davis played the position for the Chargers as well from 1999-00.

Assistant secondary coach Greg Jackson was a Chargers safety from 1997-00.

Quarterback Scott Tolzien went to training camp with the Chargers in 2011.

Ravens

Chargers punter Mike Scifres and Ravens safety Ed Reed are former high school teammates at Destrehan (La.) High School.

Assistant offensive assistant Todd Washington was a training camp coaching intern with the Chargers in 2009.
