Henne’s NFL Scouting Combine Blog – Day 2

I have to say, it was miphoto(3)ghty impressive watching both Telesco and McCoy make the rounds here at Lucas Oil Stadium today.  Everywhere they went, some of the best and brightest minds in the NFL flocked to both men.  It seemed around every corner there was another member of the media or an NFL front office offering best wishes and congratulating them on joining the Chargers.

I expected Telesco and McCoy to do well in their press conferences, and they certainly did.  For me the biggest takeaway was both men’s confidence in Ryan Mathews and how they have big plans for the Chargers running back.

Meanwhile, I took advantage of having some of the biggest names in the NFL being all in the same room to get their thoughts and impressions on the new Chargers regime.  Look for that in the coming days on Chargers.com.

We’ve got another hour to go here in the interview room but I’m wrapping things up to head back to the hotel and meet with Tom Telesco to get some exclusive content for the website this week.  As soon as I finish with Telesco I’ll have coverage of his and McCoy’s press conferences up on the site as soon as possible.

Stay tuned!

Eric Fisher is a mammoth of a man!photo(2)

One of the prized prospects in this year’s draft, and a player that many mock drafts have going to the Chargers at 11th overall, Fisher was very engaging and commanded the room during his brief press conference.

Numerous times Fisher reiterated he plans on being the number one offensive tackle selected in the draft.  That is his goal and he is working tirelessly at it.  He has quite the story as he was only recruited by two colleges as a 230-pound offensive lineman out of high school.  Now, the Central Michigan star weighs 306 pounds, stands 6-foot-7 and with nimble feet is skyrocketing up draft boards.   In fact, some people have him possibly being the first overall selection come April.

I pulled Fisher aside as he finished his press conference and asked him about the possibility of joining the Chargers.  His answer was quite vague, but this is what he had to say:

“Any team that will give me the chance to play football and would be happy to have me I’d love to play for.”

Again, it’s a cookie-cutter answer that I’m sure he’s been told to say, but based on his frame, the way he gave his answers and his rapid development on the field, it’s easy to see why Fisher is one of the biggest names in this year’s draft.

11:20am ESTJohn Fox

Denver Broncos’ head coach John Fox spoke with the media a short while ago.  We will have a complete AFC West Breakdown later (save for the Raiders who are not scheduled to meet with the media), but here are a few highlights of what he had to say.

- San Diego State’s Ronnie Hillman will have a bigger role in the offense in 2013, his second year in the league.

- Fox is proud of his “coaching tree” in the AFC West in both McCoy and Raiders’ head coach Dennis Allen.  Said it is tough to play against coaches you have a relationship with, but at this point in his career he has a relationship with many coaches in the NFL.

- The loss to the Ravens in the playoffs left him “scarred” but he has no choice but to move on.

- Fox said he is familiar with Chiefs’ new head coach Andy Reid based on their time together in the NFC East.

- Fox is sad to see his former offensive coordinator Mike McCoy go to the Chargers, but is happy for him that he has the opportunity.  Said it will be tough to replace him but that they have no choice but to move on.
