Henne’s NFL Scouting Combine Blog – Day 3

photo(6)Even though there is still a steady stream of NFL execs meeting with the media, things have quickly slowed down here at Lucas Oil Stadium.

I took advantage of the down time to meet with some of the top NFL pundits out there, including Peter King, Adam Schefter, Bill Polian and more. We spoke both on the record and off about the Chargers, and they couldn’t stop raving about the hirings of Tom Telesco and Mike McCoy.  I’ll have something up on them on Chargers.com soon.

I’m actually packing up now and heading back to the team’s hotel to pound out some articles for the site, so look for them to be up relatively soon.

But before I head out, I ran over to the field as I heard some of the punters were working out.  You can see a glimpse of it over to the right.  It’s pretty bare out there, but it will be packed tomorrow with offensive linemen and tight ends working out.

The announcer didn’t even get to finish Matt Barkley’s name and the entire media room rushed in unison over to the podium to hear what one of the biggest names in this year’s draft had to say.  If I had to guess, I’d say it will be the biggest grouping of media for any individual player except for Manti Te’o who speaks tomorrow.

The USC QB won’t throw at this year’s combine as he is still recovering from a separated shoulder suffered in the fall, but he will go through the interviews and medical exams.  He plans on throwing at his pro day later in the year.

My initial impression?   Barkley is a bit smaller with a thinner frame than I anticipated, but he displayed the confidence and poise needed from a quarterback to be the leader of an NFL team.

He boldly stated that he believes he is the best QB in this year’s draft.  A self-proclaimed traditional drop back passer, he lauded his ability to throw on the run as well as his experience and strong leadership qualities.

Where Matt Barkley ends up being selected is one of the more intriguing story lines of this year’s draft.  Based on his press conference just now, it’s clear he is anticipating being a high pick and delivering right away.

photo(4)Greetings from a dreary, snow-covered, foggy Indianapolis.

It’s quite a different scene inside Lucas Oil Stadium today.  Yesterday you could barely move it was so packed tight with NFL brass and media members.  Today it seems like there are maybe half as many here in the interview room.

Yesterday, offensive lineman and tight ends met with the media while today the more glamorous skill positions will make the rounds.  It’s pretty much a free for all as a multitude of players all speak at the same time, but I’ll try to get you guys some info on the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers when they finally meet the media later in the afternoon.

Over at Chargers.com you will find a bunch of new content coming in throughout the day.  Right now we are tentatively scheduled to post articles on John Spanos’ combine experiences, Tom Telesco’s return to Indy and some top quotes from NFL pundits on the Bolts.

If you have any ideas for content you’d like to see over the next few days from the Combine, leave them in the comments below!

Who have the Chargers had scheduled player interviews with? Did they comment on them?
