Rookie Orientation Photos

Posted by Christopher Smith on May 11, 2012 – 1:48 PM

Six of the seven draft picks, most of the 21 college free agents signed by the Chargers and more than a dozen rookies on hand for a tryout took the field at 11 a.m. Friday for their first NFL practice. Fifth-round pick Johnnie Troutman watched with his arm in a sling due to a recent pectoral surgery.

OLB Melvin Ingram, the Chargers’ first-round pick, chases former LSU QB Jarrett Lee.

Second-round pick and DE Kendall Reyes doesn’t fall for defensive line coach Don Johnson’s false cadence, instead getting off the ball on the correct “snap.”

SS Brandon Taylor hauls in a pass during a defensive back movement drill under the supervision of new position coach Ron Meeks.

Fourth-round pick Ladarius Green works on his blocking with tight ends coach Jason Michael.

RB Edwin Baker of Michigan State, a seventh-round pick, takes a handoff up the gut.

QB Taylor Potts of Texas Tech, here for a weekend tryout, ropes a pass downfield.

Head Coach Norv Turner tells Green not to extend his arms five yards before the ball arrives and instead to run hard and put his hands up later.

Ingram, lining up on the left side of the defensive front, moved around often during Friday’s full-team drill.

Ingram addresses the San Diego media after his first professional practice.

Chargers Begin Offseason Workouts

Posted by Christopher Smith on April 23, 2012 – 9:58 AM

Phase I of offseason workouts began Monday at Chargers Park. By my (unofficial) count, more than 55 players attended the morning session.

The players began with running Monday morning at 8 a.m.

OLB Antwan Barnes limbers up his legs over hurdles. Barnes made 11 sacks last season.

RB Ryan Mathews heaves a medicine ball during circuit training.

FS Eric Weddle, SS Darrell Stuckey and CB Antoine Cason walk between drills.

LG Tyronne Green starts what's an important offseason in his career. Green, in a contract year, will get a chance to replace the retired Kris Dielman in the starting lineup.

Players are not allowed to take part in organized football drills during Phase I of the offseason conditioning program under the new CBA.

Draft Meetings Begin

Posted by Christopher Smith on April 10, 2012 – 11:02 AM

The Chargers started the lengthy final process of draft preparation Tuesday. San Diego’s entire player personnel department, along with Head Coach Norv Turner, began pre-draft meetings at Chargers Park.

The group goes through each player in what’s called “draft readings,” where one or more of those in the room share their notes and analysis out loud for one player at a time. They discuss each player’s personality, character, physical attributes and overall skill set. The team began with offensive linemen Tuesday, so Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line coach Hal Hunter and Offensive Line coach Mike Sullivan both were present as well.

General Manager A.J. Smith sits at the head of the table opposite Player Personnel Director Jimmy Raye. Turner sits to Smith’s right and Director of College Scouting John Spanos sits to Raye’s left. The rest of the player personnel department and the assistant coaches sit in between at the long draft room table, or at several small satellite tables a few feet away.

Head Coach Norv Turner and General Manager A.J. Smith listen as a scout shares his notes on an offensive lineman from the Midwest.

Here is Smith's view from the head of the table as the scouts reconvene after a short break Tuesday morning.

Turner opens a thick binder of notes gathered from interviews at the NFL Combine.

Raye (left) and Spanos sit near each other during Tuesday's draft readings.

Smith listens intently, pen in hand.

Director of Pro Scouting Dennis Abraham, right, sits at one of the smaller tables with Assistant Director of Pro Scouting Bryan Cox.

Turner cracks a joke as he takes his place at the table and the meeting resumes.

Pregame Photos: Broncos at Chargers

Posted by Christopher Smith on November 27, 2011 – 2:00 PM

Photos from Qualcomm Stadium courtesy of Mike Nowak.

It's a postcard kind of late-November afternoon at Qualcomm Stadium, where the Chargers and Broncos are jostling for positioning in the AFC West behind Oakland.

RB Ryan Mathews (knee) was limited a bit during the week but has 245 career rushing yards against Denver in two games, including a career-high 125 in a 29-24 win at Sports Authority Field on Oct. 9.

K Nick Novak, warming up before the game, made five field goals, including one from 51 yards, against Denver on Oct. 9.

WR Malcom Floyd (inactive) did warm up on the field before the game and appears to be making progress.

DT Antonio Garay is a vital defensive piece against the run. He’ll need to play well today against Denver, which is running the ball at an elite level.

Pregame photos: Chargers at Bears

Posted by Christopher Smith on November 20, 2011 – 1:46 PM

Here are some pregame photos from Soldier Field, courtesy of Mike Nowak:

RB Ryan Mathews gets his left arm taped before today’s game against Chicago.

FB Jacob Hester and WR Vincent Brown get ready to take the field as San Diego (4-5) prepares to take on Chicago (6-3).

The Chargers will count on WR Vincent Jackson to have a big game with several injured players along the offensive line.

G-T Stephen Schilling will start at RG in place of Louis Vasquez (ankle). Schilling has played one offensive snap this season.

The jerseys of Vincent Brown (No. 86) and the defensive backs hang in their lockers before they arrive at Soldier Field.
