NFL referees will have a new look this season. Gone are the traditional vertical black-white stripes. Taking its place is a flashier look that features wide white and thin black stripes that flare around the shoulders and upper arms.

Sports Illustrated photographer Peter Read Miller is the winner of the Dave Boss Award of Excellence for his entry in the 38th Annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest. His photo, titled “All Charged Up" was deemed the Photograph of the Year.

Linebacker Shawne Merriman’s “Lights Out” tattoo gets mention in the December 12, 2005 issue of Sports Illustrated.
Merriman was nicknamed Lights Out after knocking out four players while in high school in Maryland. When he delivers a big hit, he pretends to flip the switch on his right forearm. "I always thought of myself as an entertainer," he says. "If you don't love hitting people -- you don't love football."
