Cover boy

The Sports Business Journal is reporting that retired Packers quarterback Brett Favre will be on the cover of Madden '09. Give that sigh of relief, Chargers fans. LT has avoided the curse once again.

It was reported last year that Madden's people had negotiated with LT's representatives to have the two-time defending NFL rushing champion on the cover but the two sides didn't ever agree on terms. Titans quarterback Vince Young ended up as the poster boy for the popular game. Tomlinson has yet to appear on the cover and it looks like he won't adorn the game this summer either.

'08 NFL Free Agency Q&A

Q - When can players start being signed in the 2008 free agency signing period?

A - Beginning at 12:01 AM ET on Friday, February 29.

Q -- What are the categories of free agency?

A -- Players are either "restricted" or "unrestricted" free agents. Within the categories are also "transition" and "franchise" players.

Q -- What is the time period for free agency signings this year?

A -- For restricted free agents, from February 29 to April 18; for unrestricted free agents, from February 29 to July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later); and for franchise players, from February 29 until the Tuesday after the 10th week of the season (November 11).

Q -- What is the difference between a restricted free agent and an unrestricted free agent?

A -- Players become restricted free agents when they complete three accrued seasons and their contract expires. Unrestricted free agents have completed four or more accrued seasons with an expired contract.

Q -- What constitutes an "accrued season?"

A -- Six or more regular-season games on a club's active/inactive, reserved-injured or "physically unable to perform" lists.

Q -- Other than accrued seasons, what determines a restricted free agent?

A -- He has received a "qualifying" offer (a salary level predetermined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players) from his old club. He can negotiate with any club through April 18. If the restricted free agent accepts an offer sheet from a new club, his old club can match the offer and retain him because it has the "right of first refusal." If the old club does not match the offer, it can possibly receive draft-choice compensation depending on the amount of its qualifying offer. If an offer sheet is not executed, the player's rights revert to his old club after April 18.

Q -- What determines an unrestricted free agent?

A - A player with four or more accrued seasons whose contract has expired. He is free to sign with any club, with no compensation owed to his old club, through July 22 (or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later). On July 23, his rights revert to his old club if it made a "tender" offer (110 percent of last year's salary) to him by June 1. His old club then has until the Tuesday after the 10th week of the season (November 11) to sign him. If he does not sign by November 11, he must sit out the season. If no tender is offered by June 1, the player can be signed by any club at any time throughout the season.

Q -- What determines a transition player?

A -- A club can designate one transition player (or one franchise player) in any given year. The player's club must offer a minimum of the average of the top 10 salaries of last season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation.

Q -- What determines a franchise player?

A -- A club can designate one franchise player (or one transition player) in any given year. The salary level offer by a player's club determines what type of franchise player he is. An "exclusive" franchise player -- not free to sign with another club -- is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the current year as of April 18, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, or the average of the top five salaries at his position as of the end of last season -- whichever of the three is greater. If the player is offered a minimum of the average of the top five salaries of last season at his position, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, he becomes a "non-exclusive" franchise player and can negotiate with other clubs. His old club can match a new club's offer, or receive two first-round draft choices if it decides not to match.

Q -- Can a club decide to withdraw its franchise or transition designations on a player? If so, can it then use them on other players?

A -- A club can withdraw its franchise or transition designations and the player then automatically becomes an unrestricted free agent either immediately or when his contract expires. The club cannot name a new franchise or transition player that year. It can name a new franchise or transition player the next year.

Q - What is the salary cap for 2008?

A - The salary cap is $116.0 million per club.

Mruczkowski signs three-year deal

Chargers offensive lineman Scott Mruczkowski, who was scheduled to become a restricted free agent Thursday evening, signed a new three-year contract with the Chargers on Wednesday that will keep him in Lightning Bolts through the 2010 season.

Numbers game

I just got an email from Chargers equipment manager Bob Wick letting me know that newly-acquired linebacker Derek Smith will wear number 58. Randall Godfrey was the last Bolt to wear that number.

Also, Wick informed us a couple weeks ago that a player has swapped numbers for the new season.

Last year, a cornerback discarded number 25 prior to his second NFL season and had a monster year. Not that there’s any correlation, but Paul Oliver is hoping that his switch from 25 will work out like Antonio Cromartie’s. Oliver will now wear 27, a number that belonged to Bhawoh Jue when he arrived in San Diego last summer.

Chargers release 2007 preseason schedule

Norv Turner will make his head coaching debut in San Diego when the Chargers open the 2007 preseason on Sunday night Aug. 12, playing host to the Seattle Seahawks in an NBC Sunday Night Football national telecast. The game will kick off at 5 p.m. PDT and will be a rematch of last year’s Christmas Eve thriller in Seattle where the Bolts defeated the Seahawks, 20-17, on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Philip Rivers to Vincent Jackson with 29 seconds left to play.

Six days later, the Chargers will return to the national stage when they travel to St. Louis to take on the Rams on Saturday, Aug. 18 in another nationally-televised game. The Chargers will also play on the road in the third week of the preseason, making their first visit to University of Phoenix Stadium to take on the Arizona Cardinals. The date and time of the game are TBD (Aug. 23-27). University of Phoenix Stadium will be the host site for Super Bowl XLII in February 2008. The Chargers closed out the 2006 regular season against the Cardinals, defeating Arizona, 27-20, to secure their franchise-record 14th win of the season. Rivers threw two touchdown passes and completed a career-high 79 percent of his passes in helping lead the Bolts to the win.

The Bolts return home to close out the preseason when they host the San Francisco 49ers. Again, the exact date and time for the 49ers contest is TBD (Aug. 31-Sept. 2). It will mark the start of a two-game homestand for the Chargers, as they are scheduled to open the 2007 regular season a week later at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1:15 p.m. PDT against the Chicago Bears. The Bolts and 49ers also met during the ’06 regular season, with San Diego prevailing, 48-19, at Monster Park. Back to School

Four Chargers enroll in programs at Kellogg, Stanford & Wharton Business Schools.

Luis Castillo, Shaun Phillips, Keenan McCardell and Aaron Shea all are taking advantage of a NFL-NFLPA initiative to assist players in preparing for their post-playing careers. They are among 116 players who have enrolled in the NFL Business Management and Entrepreneurial Program.

Player enrollment criteria include level of education, professional business experience, interest in starting, owning, or managing a business, and leadership and community involvement. Under the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, players may be reimbursed for up to $15,000 this year for education expenses at an accredited institution of higher learning.

Last year, 112 NFL players participated at the four business schools. In the program’s first season (2005), 66 players participated at Harvard Business School and the Wharton School.

Turner adds Rivera to staff

In his first day on the job, Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner made a big splash Monday night by announcing that he’s hired former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera to coach his linebackers. Rivera was in San Diego last Friday interviewing for the head coaching job with the Chargers. He landed a position with Bolts, Monday although it wasn’t the one that he originally sought out.

What they have to say about Norv Turner...

Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson -- “I am very excited to work with Norv. We have a great relationship. Norv is a perfect fit for our team. He will know exactly what to do with our team.”

Chargers DT Jamal Williams -- “It’s going to be exciting for all of us. He’s going to give a lot of energy to the players. I’m looking forward to having him back again in San Diego.”

Chargers QB Philip Rivers -- “I am excited about Coach Turner and what he will bring to our team. In a brief visit with him today, I left excited. I’m anxious to begin working with him to bring a championship to San Diego.”

Former Dallas QB Troy Aikman -- “I would say that everyone knows that we’re pretty close friends. I paid him the highest honor that I could last year when I asked him to present me in the Hall of Fame. He had a tremendous impact on my career. I think he’s an outstanding football coach. I think circumstances have kept him from having more success at some of the places he’s been. I anticipate that he’s going to be a great fit for the San Diego Chargers. I got to believe that Philip Rivers is awfully excited about the hiring and also LaDainian Tomlinson. I think that if you look at Norv over the years and what he’s been able to do for quarterbacks and what he’s meant to a number of quarterbacks, not just myself but Brad Johnson and Trent Green just to name a couple is a testament to his abilities. He’s also done a heck of a job with some running backs. He has had a number of guys who have had rushing titles…last year Frank Gore winning the NFC rushing title. I think it will be business as usual for the Chargers offense.”

Former Washington QB Brad Johnson -- On what Norv brings to the Chargers - “Norv is a very hands-on coach. He’s very approachable and communicates great with all the players and on an individual basis. He’ll have these guys ready on game day. He finds a way to make you better as a player. It’s an awesome opportunity for everyone in the organization.”

On what Norv will provide for Philip Rivers -- “The good thing for Philip is that he’s already used to the system in a sense with the terminology and the number digits. Philip is a smart guy so he will pick up on it quick. Norv will get you back quick on your drop. He’ll make you decisive and get the ball down the field. He has a great feel for the game. Some of these guys are copycat coaches. Norv has a great feel for it.”

49ers QB Trent Dilfer - “I think it was a great hire by the Chargers. He’s going to do a great job as the head football coach there. He’s got experience and has proven that he can do a good job. Now that he has inherited a good football team and a good front office, the sky is the limit.

“Norv is great to play for because he’s a very good teacher of football. He’s not arrogant in his approach to the game. He’s constantly evolving and learning, which you can’t say about a lot of coaches. On game day, he can flat out call plays. He knows what it takes to win. He knows what it takes to develop personnel and get the most out of people. All of those things together, he’s one of the finest football coaches I’ve ever been around.

“I would say that I learned more with Norv last year than in my previous 12 years in the league. The Chargers’ gain is the 49ers’ loss. San Diego is getting a great guy and a great coach.”

Chargers hire Turner as HC, Cottrell as DC

The San Diego Chargers have selected offensive mastermind Norv Turner as the team’s new head coach. A veteran of 22 NFL seasons in the coaching ranks, Turner becomes the 14th head coach in team history.

The team also announce that they they’ve hired veteran NFL defensive strategist Ted Cottrell to be the team’s defensive coordinator.

Binn will join LaDainian Tomlinson, Lorenzo Neal, Antonio Gates, Nick Hardwick, Marcus McNeill, Jamal Williams, Shawne Merriman, Kassim Osgood and Nate Kaeding. Quarterback Philip Rivers will not play due to a foot injury.

Marty Schottenheimer, Philip Rivers quotes on Cam Cameron

Chargers Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer:

“I think Cam is a terrific choice for Mr. Huizenga and the Miami Dolphins. He’s done a great job in every regard, and we’re very, very happy for him. I think he’s an outstanding football coach. He’s a great teacher and a great person. I think his biggest strength is his ability to communicate the message to his players. He’s got a lot of energy and he’s passionate about what he does. You don’t have to spend much time around him to realize that.”

“Right now we’re going to look at all of our options. We’d like to keep the system in place. It is sound and has proven to be successful. We don’t want our players to have to learn a new system. I’m going to sit back and not rush into anything. I’m going to look in house first. We have our work cut out to replace Cam.”

Chargers Quarterback Philip Rivers

“Cam has had a tremendous impact on me as a young quarterback. He brings a lot of knowledge with both the game planning and the system that he runs. He had a lot to do with my success this year. He’s a great motivator. He has a great understanding of the game in all phases. He really has the demeanor about him that exudes a lot of confidence. I think his players feed off of that.”

Dolphins name Cam Cameron new Head Coach

The Miami Dolphins today announced that Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron has signed a four-year contract to become the organization’s seventh head coach.

With the departure who will the Chargers obtain to replace Cameron? Should the Chargers look within or abroad? Certainly a question that will be debated in the next few days.

LaDainian Tomlinson finishes the season with 1,815 rushing yards to claim the NFL rushing title…he is the first Charger in NFL history to win the league’s rushing crown.

LaDainian Tomlinson’s 2,323 total yards this season are the sixth-most in a season in NFL history…the only players with more were Marshall Faulk (2,429 in 1999), Tiki Barber (2,390 in 2005), Tomlinson (2,370 in 2003), Barry Sanders (2,358 in 1997) and Stephen Jackson (2,334 in 2006).

Tomlinson had 16 rush attempts today to finish the season with 348, second-most in a season in team history.

Philip Rivers’ completion percentage today (.792) was a career-high…he finished the game 19-of-24 for 231 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for a 117.2 passer rating…it was his fourth-highest rated game of the season and his second-highest at home.

Rivers touchdown passes covered 33 yards to Vincent Jackson and 14 yards to Antonio Gates…Jackson’s touchdown catch was his third in the last two games…Gates’ was his first in the last three games.

Shawne Merriman had one sack today to finish the season with 17.0, tied with Leslie O’Neal (1992) and Steve DeLong (1969) for the second-most in a season in team history.

Tim Dobbins’ fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown was the Bolts’ second of the season…Marques Harris recovered a fumble in the end zone against Cleveland on Nov. 5.

Nate Kaeding scored nine points today to raise his season total to 136 and set a new team kick-scoring record…the previous mark of 135 was set by John Carney in 1994.

Kaeding hit both of his field goals today to finish the season 26 of 29…his .897 conversion percentage for the season is the second-highest in team history (based on a minimum of 14 att.)…John Carney set the team record (.905) in 1990.

Kaeding set a new single-season record this season with 58 PATs…he has hit a team-record 129 in a row.

Mike Scifres landed all three of his punts today inside the 20-yard line and did not have any touchbacks…he finishes the season with 35 punts inside the 20 and only two touchbacks…it’s the most punts landed inside the 20 since the stat has been kept (1976) and it’s tied for the fewest touchbacks in a season with John Kidd, who had two in 1990.

The Chargers scored 27 points today to finish the season with 492, a new team record…the previous record was 478 points in 1981 – please note the total of 468 in the team’s media guide is incorrect.

The Chargers clinched home-field advantage in the AFC Playoffs for the third time in team history (1979 & 1980)…the Chargers will host a divisional playoff game at Qualcomm Stadium on either Jan. 13 or 14.

The Chargers finished 8-0 at home for the first time in team history…it is a team record for home wins…the team’s only other undefeated season was a 7-0 mark in 1963.

The Chargers had one sack today to finish the season with 61…it’s the second-most in a season in team history (62 in 1986).

Two-Year Term

Already the NFL’s single-season rushing TD record-holder with 28, running back LaDainian Tomlinson now eyes the rush-TD high-water mark for a two-year span. Tomlinson has rushed for 46 scores since the start of 2005. He trails only Kansas City’s Priest Holmes -- 48 rushing TDs in 2002-03 – in the two-year category.

Merriman leads the NFL with 16 sacks

Earlier today Elias Sports Bureau, the NFL’s Official stats keeper, credited Shawne Merriman with an extra half-sack in Sunday’s win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The sack in question was on a third-and-10 with 9:02 left in the second quarter. The game day stats crew gave Jacques Cesaire a full sack, when both Cesair and Merriman took down quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Elias reviewed the play and credited Merriman with the half-sack.

Merriman now leads the NFL with 16 sacks and needs two more on Sunday to break Gary Johnson’s team record of 17.5 in 1980.

Merriman AFC Defensive of the Week

Linebacker Shawne Merriman, rookie quarterback Vince Young of the Tennessee Titans and kicker Kris Brown of the Houston Texans are the AFC Defensive, Offensive, and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the 16th week of the 2006 season (December 21, 23-25), the NFL announced today.

Defense: LB Shawne Merriman, San Diego Chargers

Helping keep the Seattle offense off-balance last Sunday was San Diego All-Star linebacker Merriman, who posted five tackles, including 3.0 sacks, two other quarterback pressures and a pair of passes defensed in a 20-17 road win to maintain possession of the inside track for the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed. With a win at home against Arizona Sunday, the Chargers (13-2) will earn homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. The victory was the Chargers’ 13th of the season, establishing a franchise record. Merriman sacked the Seattle quarterback on the first play from scrimmage which led to an eventual punt. His second sack later in the first quarter put the Seahawks in a 2nd-and-15 situation where the Chargers capitalized on an interception two plays later. His final sack of the day came on the Seahawks’ final drive to stymie a Seattle comeback attempt. Merriman’s disruptions in the backfield helped limit the Seattle quarterback to the second-lowest passer rating in his career as he completed on 17 of 37 (45.9 percent) on the day. The Chargers lead the NFL with 60 sacks.

In his second season from Maryland, this is the second Player of the Week Award of Merriman’s career.

Home sweet home

The Bolts can earn homefield advantage, their first since 1980, with a win or tie against Arizona. They already have their first first-round bye since 1994 and have set a team record for wins in a season. Homefield beckons.

“You have to be able to win at home on a consistent basis,” says running back LaDainian Tomlinson. “That’s where you make your mark.”
