A little fun

Posted by Casey Pearce on August 11, 2009 – 6:36 PM

Tuesday’s afternoon practice had a little different feel and ended with a few laughs, which seemed like a great way to break up what is perhaps the longest week of training camp.  The Chargers spent a good portion of the day working on their version of the Wildcat offense, or the “Wild Frog” as Norv Turner called it in reference to former TCU Horned Frog LaDainian Tomlinson being at the center of it.

Turner joked that with the league’s leader in touchdown passes flanked wide and a four-time Pro Bowl tight end becoming an offensive tackle, the system won’t become a fixure, but the Chargers could use it in certain situations.  Turner likes the idea of finding more ways to get LT into space.

The other “fun” part of practice came on the last play.  During a red zone period, Jamal Williams batted down a Rivers pass and yelled a bit in celebration.  But the ball bounced right back to Rivers, who took off running outside.  Williams gave chase in the open field but tripped and fell forward, which drew a huge round of laughs from Williams’ teammates.  Rivers finished the run and made it to the end zone.

Another comical moment came when Jeromey Clary and Ryon Bingham were playfully boxing after a play and some thought camp’s first skirmish had developed.  As a couple guys stepped in to break it up, Bingham told them they were just playing.  This group really seems to work well together and enjoys being around each other.

Another moment that made me smile was the long conversation I had with former Chargers wide receiver John Jefferson.  I’ll have a story up soon telling why he’s on hand for a couple of days.  He’s an extremely nice guy and it was fun getting to chat with him.

Eric Weddle returned to the field after a few days off with a bum ankle.  It was good to see him back out there running around.  Larry English flashed during the afternoon as well.  My money is on him having at least one sack Saturday night.

I opened by saying this is the longest week of camp.  Here’s why: last week there was still something new to it.  At the end of the week the games start.  We’re at the point where guys are just ready to start hitting another colored jersey.  That comes Saturday.

Don’t forget about tomorrow night’s public practice!  It’s the last open one of camp.  Hope to see you there!
