Current Roster by Position
San Diego’s players, coaches and staff have more than two weeks to get some sun, relax with family and take a road trip between workouts and planning.
Training camp begins in full on July 30. That’s 16 days from now. NFL teams can carry no more than 80 players into training camp.
The Chargers, though, already are down to the roster limit of 80 after five draft picks, LB Donald Butler, SS Darrell Stuckey, DT Cam Thomas and QB Jonathan Crompton signed contracts.
That number doesn’t include RB Ryan Mathews, the last unsigned draft pick, or the three restricted free agents that haven’t signed their tenders, LT Marcus McNeil, WR Vincent Jackson and OLB Shawne Merriman. San Diego likely would need to make an additional roster move if and when those players agree to contracts.
You’ll note a two-week series that began yesterday on Chargers.com to preview each position, but here’s a breakdown of the current roster.
Quarterbacks (3) – Crompton, Philip Rivers, Billy Volek.
Running backs (5) – Curtis Brinkley, Mathews*, Marcus Mason, Shawnbrey McNeal, Darren Sproles.

Roster Moves
As you’ve heard by now, the Chargers released four players Monday.
Teams can carry a maximum of 80 players into training camp. The drafted rookies do not count toward the number until they sign contracts, nor do the restricted free agents that haven’t signed.
Including the rookies (only QB Jonathan Crompton has signed a contract thus far), the roster sits at 81 players after the most recent moves. The rookies do not report to camp for almost five more weeks.
The Chargers list two strong safeties without Kevin Ellison. They are Steve Gregory and draft pick Darrell Stuckey.
Stay true and keep pounding,
Christopher
