The team got its first practice back in San Diego on Tuesday in a nice breeze with temperatures that had to have been in the 70s. Back to enjoying California weather.

The team announced Tuesday after practice that Junior Seau will be the 35th member of the Chargers Hall of Fame. Seau gave a short, passionate speech to the players about being a family.

Junior Seau talks to the Chargers about the importance of team.

Seau shakes hands with Chairman of the Board - President Dean Spanos.

Another shot of Seau during his passionate speech to the team.

Seau told the media he hopes San Diego still is undefeated when he's honored Week 12 at halftime of Broncos at Chargers.

WR Vincent Brown returned to practice Tuesday. Head Coach Norv Turner said Brown is "way behind" but expects him to be able to contribute by the regular season.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 19

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 19, 2011 – 6:04 PM

The Chargers and Cowboys rolled through scenario after scenario Friday afternoon in a two-and-a-half hour practice at Cowboys Stadium.

Two-minute offense, red zone work, punting in a backed-up situation and third-down scenarios were a few of the focal points.

SS Bob Sanders, taking the field at Cowboys Stadium, has been vocal this week as the Chargers and Cowboys practice together.

LS Mike Windt and P/K Ricky Schmitt practice on the sideline.

TE Brad Taylor makes a snazzy one-handed catch in the end zone working against linebacker Sean Lee.

OLB Larry English stares down Cowboys QB Tony Romo. English had an active day, including what would've been a highlight smack on receiver Manuel Johnson.

RB Ryan Mathews crouches before a snap against the Cowboys' starting defense.

LB Darryl Gamble, a standout in the preseason opener, hopes for more opportunities against Dallas on Sunday.

Head Coach Norv Turner shares a moment with Hall of Fame QB Troy Aikman at Cowboys Stadium.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 18

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 18, 2011 – 10:12 AM

Thursday morning’s practice session was early for San Diego. The Chargers got practice waking up at a different hour, as breakfast and treatment both began by 4:30 a.m. PT. The team left the hotel for Valley Ranch at 6:15 a.m. PT.

The Chargers and Cowboys got a competitive two-hour practice, beginning with a punt coverage period. Then they split into two fields: San Diego offense vs. Dallas defense; Dallas offense vs. San Diego defense. There were plenty of reps to go around.

The teams seemed aimable, with former Charger Igor Olshansky greeting San Diego’s offensive line with a smile. Only one brief scuffle broke out during practice as the teams managed to stay civil despite the intensity, an obvious notch above normal practice.

The temperature climbed to the upper 90s by the time Thursday's practice finished. These ambulances served as a friendly welcome, the first thing to greet the Chargers at Valley Ranch.

ILB Takeo Spikes takes a squeeze of water on the sideline.

Head Coach Norv Turner catches up with Jason Garrett (right), now the Dallas head coach. Garrett played quarterback for the Cowboys under Turner.

RB Ryan Mathews gets off the bus for Thursday's joint practice.

TE Antonio Gates makes a short catch across the middle.

WR Patrick Crayton finishes a "third down" play. Crayton, a former Cowboy, was swarmed by the Dallas media after practice.

SS Bob Sanders tries to cut off Dallas TE Jason Witten.

G-T Tyronne Green gets some 1-on-1 work with a Dallas defensive lineman.

QB Philip Rivers leads the starting offensive huddle.

Mathews makes a cut downfield, setting up a block by WR Malcom Floyd.

Rivers talks to the WRs between repetitions.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 16

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 16, 2011 – 7:40 PM

Just like that, training camp is over at Chargers Park.

Yes, it officially continues another week through Tuesday morning, but Monday will be a day off for the players. The team leaves for Dallas tomorrow afternoon and will practice three more times before Sunday night’s game.

Head Coach Norv Turner cancelled the Wednesday practice. Dallas also will not practice Wednesday.

“We’re traveling tomorrow and we’ll have two very good practices (with the Cowboys) Thursday and Friday,” Turner said.

He planned to consider nixing the Wednesday practice but left it on the schedule to make sure the players went hard this week. After what he deemed “outstanding” practices Saturday, Sunday and Monday, he let the players know they’d have Wednesday free before Tuesday’s session started.

“I thought it would really energize practice and it did,” Turner said. “We had an oustanding practice. We had a physical practice. And we had a high-energy practice. When you go out and do that, I think you get better.”

WR Travon Patterson tries to keep the ball from crossing the plane during a special teams coverage drill.

WR Richard Goodman tries his hand at the drill as Cris Dishman watches.

LB Darryl Gamble, one of the stars of the preseason opener, tries to get around T Stephen Schilling in a 1-on-1 pass rush drill.

FS Eric Weddle watches as RB Ryan Mathews tries to find running room through the left side of the line.

OLB Shaun Phillips and ILB Jonas Mouton try to snag RB Mike Tolbert.

Weddle lines up an interception during a defensive back drill.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 15

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 15, 2011 – 6:43 PM

Monday represented the third hard afternoon of practice since the preseason opener. Tuesday will be the 20th day of camp, and it’s difficult to keep track of the days of the week without many time markers.

The camp schedule is broken up nicely this year, though, as the entire team is about to benefit from a change of scenery by flying to Dallas on Wednesday night.

Before then, though, tomorrow is the last training camp practice open to the public.

WR Vincent Brown took the field for the first time in more than a week, catching a few passes during the individual period.

QB Scott Tolzien throws short passes to QB Billy Volek during a special teams period.

WR Malcom Floyd is all smiles after an active week of practice.

Watching linebackers take on running backs and fullbacks in 1-on-1 passing drills was one of the more exciting portions of Monday's practice.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 14

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 14, 2011 – 7:32 PM

The Chargers have zipped through two focused, high-energy practices after the preseason opener. They’ll be at Chargers Park the next three days before catching a plane to Dallas.

Eric Weddle, Bob Sanders, Vincent Jackson and Quentin Jammer (not pictured) chase a deep ball.

Weddle had a read on it, but Jackson turned into a defensive back. He might've made contact with Weddle a tad early, but he broke up the potential interception.

Weddle counted it as a drop and cranked out 10 pushups.

RB Ryan Mathews picks up Weddle on a blitz, successfully turning him outside.

WR Malcom Floyd can't control a catch as Jammer and ILB Takeo Spikes hover nearby.

QB Philip Rivers asks for a receiver to go in motion.

WR-KR Bryan Walters gathers himself during a kickoff return.

CB Dante Hughes, LB Kion Wilson and ILB Donald Butler streak downfield in kickoff coverage.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 13

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 13, 2011 – 7:45 PM

Aside from the return of Antonio Gates, Larry English, Stephen Cooper and others, Saturday’s practice focused on third down defense.

“We have a major emphasis on our third down situations. We’re going to continue with some two-minute and some red zone situations tomorrow, but third down will get a big bulk of our time,” Head Coach Norv Turner said. “The last team period was a bulk of first-down run and play-action pass, but the middle of practice we spent a lot of time on third down.

“We’re a very good offensive team on third down. We have a lot of weapons. We can create problems for our defense and I think that will help our defense grow and get better fast.”

General Manager A.J. Smith watches the linebackers during the individual period of Saturday's practice as Larry English participates in his first drills since December.

English was "anxious" to return, but agreed with the team that he wouldn't do so until he could stay on the field and avoid a back-and-forth between practice and rehab.

Stephen Cooper signed a one-year contract in the morning and practiced in full pads Saturday afternoon.

TE Antonio Gates also returned for the first time in more than a week. His repetitions will be limited for the duration of preseason, Turner said.

WR Laurent Robinson had an active day Saturday, as did Malcom Floyd and several other pass-catchers.

CB Shareece Wright, face obscured by a pass, also returned to practice but couldn't quite corral this one.

RB Mike Tolbert makes a cut as SS Bob Sanders gets in position for a stop.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 10

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 10, 2011 – 4:47 PM

The Chargers held a two-hour practice in shells Wednesday morning, the final training camp session before the start of preseason. San Diego will not practice again until Saturday afternoon.

About 15 players will not participate Thursday, Head Coach Norv Turner said. The team has taken a conservative approach, especially on key veterans like Antonio Gates, preferring to avoid risks while the regular-season opener remains more than a month away.

RB Ryan Mathews returned to practice Tuesday and responded well enough to take the field again Wednesday. Turner wasn’t ready to say whether Mathews will play against Seattle and insinuated the Chargers will evaluate No. 24 again Thursday before making a decision.

RB Ryan Mathews catches an over-the-shoulder pass on a route down the right sideline as LB Andrew Gachkar follows in coverage.

WR Vincent Jackson, catching a pass with CB Traye Simmons nearby, is ready to play in his first preseason game since 2009. The presence of two bookend 6-foot-5 receivers is a pretty sight for QB Philip Rivers and the Chargers faithful.

FB Dean Rogers caught several passes Wednesday, including this one at the goal line with SS Bob Sanders attempting to rip the ball free.

CB Ramon Broadway tips a pass intended for WR Vidal Hazelton.

NFL offenses will face several physical veteran leaders up the middle of San Diego's defense, including CB Quentin Jammer, ILB Takeo Spikes and Sanders.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 9

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 9, 2011 – 7:23 PM

Ryan Mathews practiced Tuesday after missing time with a minor strain. How his body responds likely will dictate whether he plays Thursday against Seattle.

“He looked pretty good today,” Head Coach Norv Turner said. “We’ll see how he feels tomorrow.”

Marcus McNeill was among a group that did not practice.

“He’s got tenderness in his left knee. We’re just being smart with him,” Turner said. “If we were working through May and June, some of that gets out of the way earlier.”

The Chargers split practice Tuesday, spending half of it preparing for the preseason game and the other half working on themselves like a normal camp session.

SS Bob Sanders lines up RB Ryan Mathews during an inside run.

DE Corey Liuget, squeezing some water on the sideline, was active during Tuesday's practice.

WR Cameron Kenney holds on to a pass despite coverage from CB Marcus Gilchrist.

TE Dennis Morris also squeezes a reception in close quarters.

P Mike Scifres stood on the 40-yard line and practiced spinning punts so they stopped short of the goal line. Here's one of his better efforts (the line in the foreground is the end zone).

RBs coach Ollie Wilson runs through some plays with Mathews near the beginning of Tuesday's practice.

Training Camp Recap: Aug. 8

Posted by Christopher Smith on August 8, 2011 – 7:18 PM

Three days before the preseason opener, the Chargers stayed in training camp mode Monday with a morning special teams walk-through and a padded practice in the afternoon.

The Chargers spent several plays working on special blitz situations and red zone offense/defense.

T Steve Schilling (sixth round) and DE Corey Liuget (first round) engage in a best-of-three pass-rush drill as Head Coach Norv Turner watches and QB Billy Volek serves as Liuget's target.

Liuget blew past Schilling on the first rep, but the former Michigan Wolverine stood him up at the line on the second attempt. Liuget got penetration on the deciding snap, but Schilling held hiim off enough for the offense to consider it a win, encouraging a bit of a celebration from QB Philip Rivers.

WR Vincent Jackson makes an over-the-shoulder catch down the sideline against SS Bob Sanders.

WR Laurent Robinson leaps for a deep pass between CB Marcus Gilchrist and S Darrell Stuckey.

All three got their hands on the football. At first it appeared Robinson secured a catch, but Stuckey twisted the ball away as the pile of bodies fell to the ground.
